  1. Hello Film Lovers, I have an Aaton Minima that I will be using for an upcoming shoot. Long story short, I bought the camera less than 2 months before Covid hit, and did not have a chance to use it up until now. It's been in the case/hasn't been touched for 18months. So, when I finally got a shoot scheduled, I ordered the film and had it spooled up by the lab. Everything seemed to be going well with the load. I loaded the spool into the feed side of the mag, wound up the take up spool, closed the mag, and pulled the loop to the beginning of the hinge. Basically, I followed the Abel cine tutorial. Once I got to threading the film is when I had a hard time. Opening the door for the sprocket feed (the top part) was extremely difficult. I had to press really hard and my hand almost slipped a few times which came close to knocking the camera off the table.. The other door the for the feed opened easily with just a push of my finger. From what I saw in the video the sprocket door should have opened just as easily. So, why is it so hard? I was thinking maybe there is a little screw that can undo the tension? As far as I remember when I got the camera, I gave it a once over, but did not mess with inside the camera door. Is it possible that the camera sitting for over a year caused this piece to be stuck? I'm really baffled by this, since the Abelcine loading video shows the door being opened with a simple push of the finger. I was able to open and close the door against the film, but I had to push really hard to do so. I got the loop size according to the loop marking inside, and ran the camera for close 5-6 seconds with the door open. It appeared to be running okay, but this situation will make loading each time very difficult. Since the shoot is coming up very soon, any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you, Jim Milton
  2. I appreciate all of the replies! If I am understanding you correctly, Tyler, is to not spray anywhere near the front of the camera and the lens mount? As far as the mags, I can spray under the roller, and the insert where the film leads in, as well as the plate? I will use some lens cleaner with the rails and the aperture plate? Also, is there a specific brand you use? Thank you so much for all of the information!! Jim Milton
  3. Hello Film Lovers, Looking back on my first short film and moving onto the next, I really want to avoid hairs in the camera/mag etc. Being a new to 16mm film, I did not have canned air when we were shooting. In some cases, a hair in the corner just happens, I've seen it in a lot of different films. However, I would like to avoid it as much as possible in the future. Firstly, where can I buy canned air, and what kind/brand do most people use? Secondly, I want to make sure I spray the right parts of the camera and mags, but without doing any damage to the camera specifically. Any tips and advice on how to avoid hairs on my next shoot would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Jim Milton
  4. Hello, I have recently purchased a nice set of Zeiss S16 Super Speed Mk2 lenses. However, the package did not include the 50mm lens, and I would like to have the full lens set. I was curious if anyone out there might have this one lens for sale? I would prefer Mk1 or Mk2 since they are cheaper than Mk3, but optically are the same quality. Also, I would be fine with B mount as well, preferably with a PL mount adapter, but not necessary for the sale. Anyone out there with this lens? I hope to hear from you soon! Jim Milton
  5. Hello film lovers, I have acquired an Aaton Minima for my next short film. I was doing some research on respooling film stocks onto the cores, and I can't find anyone who has shot re-spooled black and white film. I came across an old post that mentioned problematic scenarios with the spooling because the B/W film does not have the anti-static protection that color film has. Has anyone encountered this problem with shooting B/W on minima spools that were spooled up by a film lab? Any help would be greatly appreciated since I was planning on shooting some test rolls with Kodak 7222 next month. Thanks, Jim Milton
  6. Hello, I've got an Aaton minima I am looking to get some s16 prime lenses. Let me know your price Jim
  7. Anyone have a Rex model they would like to part with this summer? Jim
  8. Hello, A good friend of mine recently gave me a Bolex Supreme to test out with some handheld shots. I have to say, I really like the feel of the Bolex and it's simplicity. Granted, it's loud and can only shoot for 27 seconds, but it certainly has it's advantages. The lightweight, easy loading, and no batteries makes it ideal for a couple road trips I'm taking this summer. Which brings me to finding a good price. I would like to find a solid Rex model with a few prime lenses, or a good zoom lense. Looking on Ebay I saw a few recently serviced Rex 1 models for $800. The Rex 5 then jumps to $2000, no lenses for either. Is the Rex 5 really worth a $1200 increase? Right now, I'm really just trying to gauge what a good solid deal would be. Anyone buy a Rex model within the last couple years? Any replies are appreciated! Jim
  9. Unfortunately,it was never developed. I talked to the lab, when they saw the film, and the damage it sustained, they didn't want to put it into their equipment. I talked to the lab today, it's not looking too good. I'm still trying to figure out if someone can look at a picture of the film, and determine if it is indeed 250d. Proving it's 250d would be concrete proof that it is not mine. Thanks everyone for all your replies so far.
  10. Brandon, I didn't take the film in a changing bag since I was told it was completely ruined, and it is. I could see scratches every other foot as well as rips. Also, it was stapled back together. I'm definitely sure it's not mine. So far my experiences have been great with cinelab and with Rob houlahan. Hopefully, I'll heat from him today. I'd think he would make good on a mistake, honestly. Thanks for all your replies.
  11. Would you be able to tell by pictures if the film is 50d or 250d? If I can prove this film is in gact 250d, that would be proof it's not mine. Jim
  12. I have an update on the situation! I just noticed on the packaging for the damaged roll it says 250d, mine was 50d. Also, I saw that halfway through the roll it had ripped apart and been stapled back together. I'm assuming when we were running the camera, if our film split in half,it would have been very clear at that time, that something was wrong. The camera was running perfectly and quietly the whole time, which is why I was so baffled when the film arrived today. I'm starting to think my roll got mixed up with somebody else's at the lab. Jim
  13. Hello everyone, Like a lot of filmmakers, I was greatly dissapointed when my film came back from the lab. One of the 100ft roll 50d rolls was labeled "rejected. Roll heavily damaged. Broke perfs and rips." I'm really baffled considering the previous 6 rolls I sent in came back perfectly fine. One of those rolls was another 50d with this recent order, the other rolls were black and white neg. I really hope it's not my sr2 which is past it's 6 month warranty. I'm waiting to hear back from the lab. I'll post a few pictures. Any help is greatly appreciated. Jim
  14. Hello film lovers, Bare with me as I'm new to film. I was wandering if I could use a empty daylight spool in the take up side of my magazine instead of my adapter? It would make unloading and putting the film back in the original packaging much easier. I've shot one spool and unloaded it in total darkness, but now my adapter is in the original packaging with the film. I'm. Hoping to avoid that in the future. Any help is greatly appreciated! I'll post a couple pictures of the spool in the magazine, and the original adapter. Cheers Jim
