  1. Totally makes sense. I dont think I have an experienced enough eye to appreciate different filmstock looks. Oh, the Fujifilm-whatever stock looks so good! Etc. Completely lost on me...like wines. You could put a $10 wine and a $500 one in front of me and I wouldnt be able to tell you the difference. I was wondering about this film convert thing because it costs enough money for me to want to research it. And from the few tutorials Ive seen on it, it has color correction/grading tools that I already use in other NLEs...so it seems kind of redundant for the price.
  2. Can somebody please explain this add on/plugin...or whatever it is? I get the basic concept, but I cant really find any good info on WHY one should use this over using the color grading tools that come with whatever NLE one uses. So it allows you to create a certain look of a certain film stock, using the color profile of your camera and some fancy math wizardry. Great! But I like color grading with my current NLE. And I have LUTs (should I choose to use them). And the software has a film grain effect. So what makes this filmconvert plug in so great? Is it a lazy way to color grade? Is it comparable to slapping a LUT on the image? Any insight would be great...especially personal experience using it.
  3. I wouldnt even know how to go about doing that. Its at the Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Blvd...and I live in North Carolina. I havent been to one either. There are two local theaters here and I asked yesterday if I could possibly test the DCP file there. Hopefully they let me.
  4. God I hope so. I really hate the idea of creating a somewhat watchable micro short and then having it look like trash in front of an audience. I had a Blu-ray and a DCP made...since it will be screened in an actual theater.
  5. Its been a couple months but if I remember correctly, since I deleted it from YouTube pretty much right after, it looked ok. Not as good as Vimeo. But not as crappy as it did on the tv.
  6. Whats up. Hopefully I can articulate this properly. Ok, so I made a micro short. It looked good when edited and color graded. I uploaded it to Vimeo...still looked good. When I watch it on my phone or MacBook, I like what I see. Theres no real color or contrast difference when viewing from these. So I uploaded the film to my YouTube channel so I could watch it on my tv. It looked like total CRAP. In addition to this gross, kind of muddy look, the colors look more desaturated, contrast looks off, dark areas looked wicked dark, etc. again...really gray and desaturated. So I kept jacking with the color settings on my tv to get it looking as sharp as possible...with a color at least damn close to how it looks on my computer and smartphone. In my mind, its the tv that is messed up since my image looks good on two other machines. But heres the thing that really confuses me, I can watch movies and shows on my tv and they look normal. Where is the disconnect here? Ok, so the film was selected for a film fest and will be screened during the shorts block. Fantastic! I had a couple Blu-rays made. I got them in today and popped one into the player. It looks slightly better than the YouTube video did. Colors still look...meh. Again, more desaturated than I would like. Is there something I need to do to my tv screen or what? It HAS to be the tv screen right?
  7. Thanks for the replies, guys. I am filling out a form online for a company that does this service. I do have a question regarding audio though. For audio output, can I select 5.1? Or should I keep it in stereo?
  8. I have Resolve Studio as well. But Ive only used it to tool around with color grading test clips. I just stick with FCPX because its really intuitive and smooth with Mac. I just dont have the time to be jacking around with this thing and figuring stuff out. I need this stuff done by March.
  9. Ummmm...for this guy, not likely. I use a MacBook Pro and Im only now just finding my groove on FCPX. No way in hell I can buy more software and learn this process.
  10. Hello, I have a question because Im stuck and I.e. never really dealt with having DCPs made. I recently had a micro short (about 1:43 in length) accepted to be screened at a film festival. The director contacted me and informed me that they would need DCP format to play at the theater. Can I get a point in the right direction as far as RELIABLE companies or someone who can do these for a reasonable price? I know the process takes a certain technical skill set, but Im really not in a position to pay a fortune for a short that is a little longer than a tv commercial. Just doing a quick Google search I found a few companies that do this stuff, but I have no way of knowing how good they are, or if the price is too steep or what. One of them advertised three dollars per minute With a $100 set up charge...or something. Is this typical? Do short films usually get a little bit of a break or anything? Just looking for help fro some of you who may have experience with this stuff. Thanks!
  11. Right on. Hey man, I appreciate it. Ive been all over google and YouTube and whatnot and I just couldnt find any good feedback on the situation Ive got going on.
  12. Nice. Thats actually what I was hoping to hear. The example you provided was pretty sweet. A little darker than what Im going for, but I assume you had the area around the man flag and what not. I would like to get as much of the area around and behind my subject as possible...I guess you can say I actually WANT plenty of spill, like moonlight is being cast over the area. I know that the light wont be powerful enough to light the entire area, as it is probably 10 square acres to the tree line behind him. But I still want it to look like hes standing in an open area at night...if that makes sense. Do you think one light would cover the area around my subject adequately if I place it about 20 feet away?
  13. Months ago I was researching AFFORDABLE lights that are portable, for use outdoors. I still have the Amaran saved to my wishlist on B&H but I was wondering if there is any first hand experience here using them to light an exterior scene at night. The scene I will be working with is pretty remote. Its an open area in the woods and Im going for moonlight. Additional light in the scene will be the headlights of a car. Would this light be powerful enough? Im not trying to light acres here, but enough.
  14. Too expensive for me. Its all low/no budget stuff I do. I have a full time job and enjoy making movies as a hobby. What little money Im spending is all out of my pocket. Its not a huge production or anything. I would pay good money to BUY one. But not rent. Screw that noise! Also, there will be no close ups. Long or med/long of the boy, and onto the rest of the story. The cat itself isnt important enough for a close up. This terribly disturbed child is what will unsettle and cause discomfort.
  15. Man! I found some resources for rentals. As expected, that stuff is EXPENSIVE! 200-700 bucks to rent dead animal props for a week.
  16. Totally man! I would just as easily use a real dead animal. But again...the parents might not be down with that. They dont know me from Adam. They were just kind enough to let their boys be part of it. I dont think theyd appreciate some weirdo sticking dead animals in their childs hand (repeatedly).
  17. Horror/suspense And the boy is about 8 years old. And the cat isnt being dropped into the toilet. It is implied that he did something terrible, in this case most likely drowned it IN the toilet. And he is holding the wet, lifeless body...not out in front of him. But most likely by his side. Preferably by its throat or even the scruff of its neck. And as the camera slides he just lets it fall out of his hand and onto the floor. Again, why I need it as real as possible (with some heft to it). The whole body landing and folding...you know, like a limp dead animal, at his feet. The size doesnt matter, although Id like an adult cat. So its less guess work for the viewer. With the proper camera movement, and sound, and lighting it will be unmistakably dark and not in anyway comedic. Especially within the context of the entire story.
  18. I really do need it as real as possible. The idea is this: slide past the threshold of a bathroom where a boy is standing over the toilet with the cats lifeless body hanging in his hand. He drops the cat and it lands with a wet thud. I need that lifelike mailable prop.
  19. Yeah...ya going to be a child holding it. This is all super low budget stuff. Soliciting local help...unpaid. I was lucky to get the nod from parents to let their twin boys be a part of it. I dont think they would be too keen on the idea of their hot holding a cat corpse. And I went to that site. Sucks because I cant speak or read German haha
  20. So Im putting it here in the general chat. It might sound a little weird, but hey were talking movies here. I need a dead cat. I cant use a real one, for obvious reasons. but I need one for a prop. Are there resources for film and stage where one could buy realistic animals for such an effect? Ive looked online but its mostly novelty stuffed animals. Im looking for something that has a little heft to it...and maybe joints that arent stuck in a fixed position. Something that can be handled and look like a dead animal...it wont be just lying on the ground. If I can get a point in the right direction that would be great. Thanks!
  21. Yeah creating a bunch of credits just for the sake of credits is dumb as hell. Its literally only me...and my wife Im just going with A short film by... And a With (my wifes name)
  22. So after some extensive googling, I saw somebody comment on a similar question. I guess the general rule is A short film by... Thats what Im going to end up doing. And just hope that the audience realizes, and can appreciate, that I filmed, cut, graded, and did all of the sound design by myself haha. Just figuring it out as I go...
  23. Hello, Im just about to wrap up a short horror film that I did myself. Directed, edited, scored, sound design...everything. My wife acted. I guess my question is, how do I end this thing credit wise? Will a simple By Justin Oakley do? Directed by...? Im not exactly a narcissistic person but I would like to make it very clear that this was all done 100% solo. But without rolling credits...obviously. Because thats just pointless. is there an interesting way to do this?
  24. You wouldnt be able to recommend a decent charger that could charge two or more F batteries would you? Since the one that came with my monitor obviously wont be up to the task.
  25. Thanks for the reply. That set up you e got looks pretty sweet. Way over my head though haha. So the chargers, while pretty dicey, do ACTUALLY fit F series batteries...of different sizes? From 550-970...or whatever? Im totally willing to invest in good batteries that are only slightly less expensive than actual Sony. I just got REALLY concerned when I saw some battery/charger sets for hundreds less than just one or two batteries. A price gap like that makes one scratch his head.
