Which comes where infront of light among Gel paper vs Diffusion Paper ? and what are the situations to use - gel infront of light first and - Diffusion infront of light first. Does color also diffuse if a diffusion is placed infront of it ? Ex : A Full CTO + 250 on M90 vs 250 + full CTO on M90

thanks mr. david

What is the advantage of book lighting ? what is the difference between bouncing a light on ultrabounce and diffusing through grid vs diffusing through 250/216 and then through grid ? How do i decide which to use in which situation ?

can someone experienced let me know answers to these questions. I have never used a color checker before. 1) How important is color checkers for Digital cameras recording in RAW or similar top quality formats ? 2) Is it a viable option for day to day use in movie production ? 3) Can we differentiate different skin tones using checker ? 4) If shooting outdoor, is it a good choice to use as day light intensity & temperature keeps varying through out the day ? 5) what are industry standard best practices for using color checkers ? 6) what is the best company color checker available in market ?

Hi Mr. David Citizen Kane is famous for deep focus. But I'm referring to full focus. When actor is close to camera, may be like a close up or extreme close up, even in wide angle lens background goes to out of focus to some degree. I was told by a cinematographer that he saw a movie from 90's where every shot in that movie is in full focus including close up shots. He doesn't remember the movie's name.

Is there any movie, where everything in shot is in focus even if the subject is close to camera ?

Apart from shape of bokeh, what are the pros and cons of having more iris blades ? Cooke S7i (image circle : 46.3 mm) - 9 blades Zeiss CP3 (image circle : 46.3 mm) - 15 blades Zeiss Supreme (image circle : 46.3 mm) - 16 blades Arri Signature (image circle : 44.7 mm) - 11 blades Leica Thalia (image circle : 60 mm) - 15 blades

Ansel Adams devised a 11 Zone system. Can this be equated to 11 exposure zones ? Current film or Digital sensors are rated as 15 stops of dynamic range. Does that mean 15 Zones or 15 Stops fit into 11 Zone system (like 1.36 stop per zone) ? HDR output is like 20 stops of dynamic range. Does it mean 20 stops fit into 11 zones ? And what is exposure latitude in relation to these ? Can some one please explain this ?! some times it is confusing.

Mr. Michael Rodin, Mr. AJ Young & Mr. Gregory Irwin, I texted Mr.Joy Holben, who the original article in AC mag, regarding the very same question I raised in the initial post. (find the conversation in the comments section of : https://ascmag.com/blog/shot-craft/the-entrance-pupil-of-the-lens) Here he accepts that the while Depth of Field covers up the minor difference in the planes between Entrance Pupil and Image/film/sensor plane but it is in the case of macro work this fails. It's in these situations eye focus is required than measurement from sensor plane. So like Mr.AJ Young said, in 99% cases its from the Φ (film/sensor/image plane) we measure focus. So in these 99 cases entrance pupil = film/sensor/image plane. and in one case entrance pupil ≠ image plane. RIGHT ? Correct me if i'm wrong. I know we don't often come across this in reality, but I'm just curious in knowing this stuff. And if anyone can, please provide reference website/pdf/book. Thanks, Ram Nanda

Thank you Mr. Gregory. putting aside the technical difficulties related to measuring focus from entrance pupil, why is entrance pupil the right position for focus calibration ?

on larger depth of field the difference between entrance pupil plane and image plane is negligible and is covered by depth of field. but its clearly evident at extreme small DoF, like in the case of macro close ups where you have to judge by eye

According to AC Magazine April 2020 edition " The Pupil Marks the Focus Spot The next thing to understand about the entrance pupil is that it is at that point — not at the film plane (or sensor plane) — from which focus should be measured. It’s a long-standing practice in cinematography to take focus measurements from the film or sensor plane of the camera. " (read the attachment) Well, the topic seems to be fine and interesting but, the basic question is never raised nor answered - WHY FOCUS SHOULD BE MEASURED FROM ENTRANCE PUPIL? Can some one explain these : 1) Do all of the points of light from the scene converge to a single point at the entrance pupil and then expand back out to the image plane ? 2) What role does exit pupil play in measuring focus ? 3) Can Iris be located not at aperture stop ? 4) How is DoF related to entrance & exit pupil ? And please provide a reference website or material to understand these technical concepts clearly. Thanks, Ram Nanda.
