  1. Good day to you AWESOME people and hope that everyone is doing FANTASTIC! I tried to do a stop motion consists of three photos but I am not happy with the result especially the way how the way how the glass of water looked. may you please help on how I can place my lighting??
  2. Good day to you and hope that you are doing AMAZING! In the Saudi film industry it is the standard for a lighting technician to carry a 120 skypanel mounted on a stand and move it from one place to another. and also it is the standard that he carries a L10-C mounted on a light stand from a place to another. The light stand weights 2 KG and L10-C light weight 20KG https://www.arri.com/en/lighting/led/l-series-c/l10-c So my question is: in your industry, is it common that a single lighting technician carries a L10-C light mounted on a stand?? and lets say that you noticed a technician asking someone for assistant and one carries the light and the other carries the stand. As a DP would you discuss this issue with the gaffer and tell him that when two technicians are doing the labor that is supposed to be done by one technician, that means the set up of lighting would take longer than usual? sorry for my bad ?
  3. FINALLY a rental house opened its door for me and I am starting to get myself familiar with the technical aspect of the craft. I used these "signs" to get my eyes familiarized with what "sharp" is, I am planning to do some experimentations with calculating depth of field and infinity focus. But the question remains the same... How to be a focus puller???
  4. Good day to you brother and hope that you are doing fine. I also used to struggle with the concept of lighting, but reading this book was an eye opener https://archive.org/details/mastersoflightco0000scha_b9t3 Well,,,, yes in this forum there are a lot of legends who would happily answer your questions, but perhaps you should attend as many shootings as possible and feel free to know the standards of lighting in your country or region and then try at the beginning stealing those lighting technique and then bit by bit you come up with your own style of lighting. Or may be you can go to rental houses and examine their equipment and get yourself familiar with lighting till it becomes 2nd nature, or perhaps when it comes to the technical aspect of the job you may rely on a gaffer you trust. Beside being a DOP I also recommend you to accept getting hired as an operator, being an operator would help you grasp the technical aspect of the craft.
  5. Thank God the film making industry in Saudi Arabia has a very friendly environment... once the camera starts rolling everyone act in accordance to his/her place. but when we for example setting the lighting.. or waiting for the talent to get ready. we act like friends. I remember once I was sitting on a chaire cleaning my slate, I noticed the director approaching so I immediately stood up and offered him my seat, but he insisted that I sit on the chair while he sat on the ground. yes it's good to be tough... but when you are kind and nice you make the crew more devoted to you as a person and to the project. of course I worksd with rude people, but thank goodness they are the minority.
  6. well,,, I can handle pressure and being in tough conditions, when I am on set I always try to pay 100% of my attention to what is going on.. but this sort of guessing games is something I simply can't handle. I know some would judge me for what I am about to say... but if you want me to do my job perfectly at least give me clear orders and give me what sort of workflow suits you the most. hopefully the DPs were kinder to you.
  7. I have always had a soft spot about movies that talks about film making. I thought may be I should share my list with you guys and hopefully you may tell me some of your recommendations. 1- Hugo 2011 2- The other side of the wind 2018 3- The Fabelmans 4- The fall 2006 (it doesn't talk about film making but it features the power of story telling) 5- Stranger than fiction (This movie truly depicts how it feels like to be a writer)
  8. I watched a Netflix movie called "Alkhallat+". In the film there is a scene inside a morgue and they used to light the scene by using a color that you may say it lies between blue and green. when I saw this scene I thought this color truly does represent death. so I thought I should ask you guys what color or what lighting technique you like to use when you have a scene that represents death?
  9. I am not denying his genius, and I'm actually glad that he is giving us a lot of refreshing movies, what I am saying is "The dark night" is not "Spider-Man 2", "Interstellar" is not "Ad Astra", "Inception" is not "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and "Dunkirk" is not "Saving Private Ryan"
  10. For me, Nolan is an example of how the plot can overrides the story and how the style can overrides the drama. I don't enjoy watching his movies, and needless to say that I won't be watching this one.
  11. In an interview with Roger Deakins, He said while shooting an episode for a TV series called "Wolcott", his collogues were amazed by the fact that he shot six and a half minute screen time at night... In my opinion I find this screen time very short. back let's say in the 80s or 90s, what is the average screen time is expected to be shot in an average day? and what is the average today?
  12. In the digital age, the sensor of the camera is one of the factors that determine the "look" of your image . But when it comes to film cameras, do they differ in terms of image quality? or does the "look" depend less on the camera and more on the film that is loaded inside the camera? please excuse my bad English?
  13. Well, I thought the cinematography is very brave, but I have a question: If this style of lighting was done for other movie, do you think the audience will tolerate it? I feel that if this style of lighting was done for other film, the audience will complain about how dark it is, very similar to what happened to that game of thrones episode "The Long Night "
  14. Good day to you awesome people and hope that you are doing GREAT! I was reading the user manual of Atomos Shogun7 and I came cross this graph. I roughly get what IRE means, but I want to understand what does "Reflectance (%)" mean
  15. I was reading the user manual of Shogun seven and came cross this. can somebody explain the difference between SDI input connection 12G and 3G
  16. Good day to you AWESOME ARTISTS and hope that everyone is doing AMAZING!
  17. watched the trailer, absolutely hate it! don't get me wrong I enjoyed watching Anderson's movies, Moonrise kingdom an absolute master piece. I didn't watch "The French Dispatch" but I remember that the movie had a very exciting trailer. but watching this trailer felt that I'm watching a stop motion movie, the composition felt very much like the isle of the dog. the character of the film felt like robots. the trailer didn't work for me.
  18. This is the first camera that came to my mind. well... for me (my personal opinion), I think when it comes to stand up comedies you don't have to use fancy cameras. I mean using mirrorless (photography) cameras would do the job. and if the talent is good looking so perhaps you should consider using sharp lenses. also for me (and once again this is my personal opinion) I prefer stand up comedies to be shot in 60 fps because that would add a layer of excitement to the performance. and to achieve "the cinematic look" for a stand up comedy, I think you should focus more about what type of lens you use and what type of color contrast you would have. please kindly update us with your decisions and hope you share with us some footage of this shooting... I'm super curious!
  19. Good day to you awesome people and hope that you are doing FANTASTIC! I do have the opportunity to get access to a rental house that got a lot of camera so I am starting to do some testing and compare between them so I would like to ask: What are the best way to examine "test" the dynamic range of a camera?
  20. Good day to you awesome people and hope that you are being FANTSTIC! so yeah I was wondering: is there an app or a website that helps me to calculate depth of field and helps nail infinity focus?
  21. Hi awesome people hope that everyone is doing fantastic on the other day I had a debate with some of my colleagues and someone said both shots has the same composition but they use difference lenses, so I wanted to know... what do you think?
  22. Hey brother hope that u r being fantastic. Yes, a movie can have too much dialogue, a lot of Arab movies have too much dialogue because they assume the audience are stupid and people wouldn't get what is going on unless if it was explained to them. I have seen "My Neighbor Totoro" long time ago, I can't say I remember it but actually I remember that the movie had a conflict. I mean the existing of the character Totoro is a conflict.
  23. Hey guys hope that you are doing FANTASTIC! I do have the impression that most Dps like to refer to paintings when they discuss the "look" of their movie with the director. So I would like to ask you which artist do you like the most?
