  1. sorry about my delay, greg... im gonna have some footage to post very soon. so far im quite happy about what we got, a part from some discontinuity with the lighting on a few shots, mainly my fault due to lack of time to set things properly. freddie
  2. hi the widescreen centre in london is one of them but honestly i had a few bad experiences lately, plus they are a bit pricey these days. you will find more infos in their website. however bear in mind that they ship the stock to Germany and process it there, thats why the prices are so high www.widescreen-centre.co.uk
  3. The DI was very obvious and took away the resolution advantage of anamorphic. Max, a part from the resolution issue you mentioned, what other artifacts give away that the film went into a DI process? thanks
  4. well, im sure Brad knows what he is talking about, maybe i am being naive as i respect Rodriguez and his work very much...if this is really true, that respect i have for the man will change
  5. It seems like he's interested in a rough look that comes from one guy doing everything, and that's what he's getting. well, "once upon a time in mexico" doesnt look rough to me at all...in fact its one of the best looking early HD films i can think of...
  6. he's right...nothing. BUT, a well crafted short can be a good calling card and can get you somewhere.
  7. He likes to have his picture taken wearing the steadicam and then get somebody else in to do most of the operating. Max, is that something you know because you have actually seen it or did you read it somewhere in the net? i find it quite silly: that means that there is an uncredited steadycam operator out there who has been ripped off from Rodriguez in so many movies...come on, man!
  8. Rolfe, thats exactly how im gonna do my next super16 project...i was wondering how much would that sort of workflow cost? a rough idea? say its a 6 minutes short
  9. i remember vividly i saw your name as "camera operator" in a Doctor Who behind the scenes documentary, therefore i guess you know a lot about the show. Any thoughts on why they dont shoot HD?
  10. hi, hate to be a pain but i think "Doctor Who" has a horrible look, the higlights are always (i guess on porpouse) blown out and the skintones have such an awful color...the Scottish series "Low Winter Sun" was shot in HD as well and has a great look.
  11. Definitely "Children of Men" and "Romanzo Criminale" (2.40 anamorphic, great camerawork and lighting), which gave me hope for the Italian cinema which has been disapointing over the last two years. Freddie
  12. I am very interested in films shot in New York.I think Gordon Willis and Owen Roizman are the cinematographers that best portrait the city I chose to live and work. i really liked the way Libatique portrayed the Big Apple both in Pi and in the Inside Man, with two different but striking visual styles
  13. can't believe i forgot to write his BSC title after his name...
  14. Andy, i couldnt agree more...i dont understand it either. this film deserves to be praised and not criticised, its the only film that made me feel very strong emotions this year, along with "little miss sunshine" and "apocalypto". "the queen" was overrated, without a doubt
  15. Dante Spinotti, i found out not a long ago that he comes from an italian village very close to the one i come from...and Seamus McGarvey, one of the nicest, humblest and kindest persons i have ever met. Oh and how can i not mention David, who i consider somehow my "cinematography teacher" on the internet. i have learned more from him on this site than from my film course
  16. "Alien vs. Predator"...i had to leave the theatre, i mean im a huge Predator fan
  17. well i am glad he asked this question, because i am i the exact same boat. sometimes i feel awkward, knowing that there are many other more talented and experienced cinematographers out there and i feel like just too young for the job. i heard how Gordon Willis, Laszlo Kovacs and Zsigmond worked all the ranks to become what they are now and i say to myself "i should do that too", because starting from the bottom allows you to watch other people at work and learn all the skills of the trade. but i wont turn the offer down, however ill try to work as an assistant for a talented cinematographer in the future and learn as much as i can
  18. i have seen "Blade Runner" recently and its just amazing, not only in its anamorphic glory, but also for the brilliant use of smoke and lighting. that film is, for me, a school of lighting
  19. wow, from the first picture i could swear it was super16, it certainly doesnt look 4x3 so i guess its really the angle the picture was shot...
  20. i think he is asking why cropping the image to 1.85 when you could shoot the super 16 full frame which is 1.66...
  21. mmh, although the scratches and dust are obviously made in post i believe that the bar scene with Kurt Russell, and most of those of Tarantino's part look more filmic, check out the highlights and the colors as opposed to the beginning of "planet terror", that first shot in the hospitak looks very HDish. however its hard to tell from a small trailer, but i wouldnt be suprised in Quentin stuck with film one more time...
