  1. I think film is going to comeback to some degree, but maybe more so with photography than with cinema. I have trouble finding modern movies that I care to watch, so I believe that issue needs to be fixed above all else
  2. Unfortunately no.. The best idea I can come up with is to ask all chinese manufacturers of cameras, scanners, etc to consider R&Ding one. the fact that this decade-old thread is one of the top hits when web-searched doesn't inspire confidence; there just isn't much recognition of the need or the niche 'opportunity'.
  3. I continue to be shocked that a viable and inexpensive consumer-level desktop scanning solution isn't on the market yet. It just needs to be large enough to hold a scanning camera and rollers/claw mechanism to drive the film through. It doesn't have to have fancy locomotion; I'd be fine with it spitting the film out onto the floor. It just needs to be cheap and produce HQ images with good if not great registration. Drifting, scratches etc are easily handled by any number of frame-blending dust/noise-removers today.
  4. If I ever make a movie I will do almost everything associated with it, because I have no other choice. If I were to somehow get into a hollywood directors chair, then I would 'retire' from all other positions , and just be a director. Outside of the ridiculous nature of hollywood and its inclusive socio-economics, there are lots and lots of professionals that excel at whatever it is that they do, and they all need the work.
  5. I liked twin peaks, seinfeld and 24.. I'll watch criminal minds and some law&order on the tv at times too. Otherwise it's sports and WWE :D I watched true detective and found it to be a ripoff of an author that I read in the past, whose name escapes me.. Otherwise the serial killer plot was ludicrous and an overblown procedural. My sister keeps going on about Mr Robot - I guess i'll have to check it out, but I have a continuing detest for Christian Slater
  6. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that major productions go with Arri, Panavision, Sony, etc not just for the cameras, but for the support that they provide. They'll have lenses for the cameras, techs on call for problems, etc. These companies (or divisions within) are as much a cinema solutions platform as they are camera-makers
  7. IMHO at this point, 35mm professional workflow aside, DIY can keep film (s16, u16, s8, 35mm) relevant ,but it's all about how cheap you can do it. processing at a lab + scans are still cost-prohibitive compared to buying a digital Camera which will generally slaughter it at resolution and image quality. I'm still waiting for a cheap desktop scanning solution - of course one can be built, but some of us (me included) are too lazy to bother with the whole process. The processing workflow seems like a workflow that can be done 'artistically' at home. Perhaps a design for a dark-tank can be made to maximize image quality. Filmmaking has always been the hobby for the upper-middle class and beyond. Today's glut of cameras has democratized the 'artform' for anybody willing to press play. I think that's a great thing, but film should continue to have a life because it offers a different perspective for creators to work from. Price-competitiveness is essential though, for indies at least.
  8. just buy a new one and swap the gates - they are cheap!
  9. Check out Cinelog that was developed by one of the main magic lantern supporters, http://www.cinelogdcp.com/;If you contact him , he can probably assist you directly in getting a match between the two profiles
  10. Unfortunately cineform is not used so much, despite being a better codec than proRes.. and gopro is basically ditching it .. But you can easily do a proxy with proRes and conform your DNGs to it, then export to whatever High Quality codec that you desire. \ A great 5 minute video tut explains it:
  11. I have 2 questions: 1-has anybody disassembled a switar 10mm RX? 2-Anybody have a source for tiny replacement grub screws? thanx
  12. Cineform is a proprietary codec, owned by GoPro. They have licensed it to Adobe, which can natively import DNG and convert to Cineform. Via Blackmagic: You can import DNG into DaVinci Resolve - you can download the Davinci Resolve Lite for free right now from the blackmagic website. You can then export it to various forms including cineform if you have their GoPro Studio pro edition I think, which is incidentally being discontinued by GoPro.
