Hey All!
Firstly, I'm excited to report that FotoKem is now offering native Kodak 5203 50D negative scan backs! Get native grain AND halation from an original camera stock for your digital footage. There is no pre-processing involved, just record your native log images to celluloid. The girlhead/chart below has only the native Arri LUT applied, no other image transforms or color. The Halation extraction is log for log.
Secondly, I've been experimenting with a new 4 strip process! This involves separating an imagine in to it's Individual RGB color channels, in addition to a simple black and white channel, then recording them all out on to a single 35mm BW negative frame (Fuji Eterna 4791). This approach has some great advantages and offers numerous creative possibilities only possible with this technique. Because the color channels are recorded individually, there is no significant color shift. In addition to a color scan, you get a black and white version too! You can use the BW to impart contrast, create a skip bleach look, or even bias the channels to emulate a Technicolor feel! Heck, even make a 2 strip look... You could offset the channels to create aberrations, dream effects, etc. Mix black and white and color for different parts of a film! SO MANY POSSIBILIIES! The BW neg stock is very fine grain, so even though this is approximately equivalent to a 16mm scan, it remains very sharp. I've used this technique on a recent project I can share: Jim Greco's new skate film "White Wall" The source material was shot on a small rec709 HD camera. We used the 4 strip process to impart contrast and color biasing, in addition to the normalization and grain it imparts. This process is still super BETA, and may only be offered on a case by case basis right now. I'm using fusion for a significant portion of the work, and I'd only recommend for people comfortable with the heavier technical lifting it requires.
I'm including a couple low res stills to wet your appetites!
