  1. @Vital Butinar Hi, Vital! So sorry for the late response. Had a family emergency and haven't been on here for a while. Thank you so much for your insights! There are definite weak spots in my work and I'm gonna give myself the time needed to develop. Your words on continuing to learn and devoting time to the craft are really motivating. Thanks so much! - Khaled
  2. @Nick Morr Hey, Nick! First I'd like to apologize for the super late reply. Been having family issues and I haven't had the time to pop back on here. Thanks so much for the kind words and the much needed insight! I find it really difficult to judge my own work, especially when I've been working on it for a while. I tend to lose perspective, so your comment is greatly appreciated. I'm definitely going to continue shooting my own projects until I can get someone to work with me. I think learning more about this craft will only help me communicate with a professional DP when that time comes. and to be honest, It's pretty damn fun to light and shoot stuff! Maybe I feel this way, because it's not my chosen profession. I have great respect for the craft and am super happy to hear you say that I've done a good job despite my limitations. I'm gonna try to dig in deep and do better work on the next one. I definitely have some weak spots that I need to tend to. Thanks again for the kind words and the critique! I will take everything you've said into consideration. Thanks a lot! -Khaled

  4. Hey! I'm a writer/director and while I'd love to hire a DP, I can't exactly afford it so I shoot my own movies out of necessity. I've struggled in the past with nice looking shots that don't really drive the story forward. They looked good to me, but didn't tell me anything. For this short I buckled down and started writing down anything relating to character, motivation, atmosphere, themes, etc...So I could make more artistically sound choices that don't threaten to derail the story in the way some of my past work has. I can see an improvement in the work, but would still like to better understand what it is I did right, and what it is I did wrong. It's important to me that the cinematography serve the story as opposed to just being a showcase for "cool shots". I'd also love to know how you folks prepare for a shoot, and what kinds of things you think about as you plan out your shots. Here's the film for reference: PLEASE watch in 4k. YouTube compression butchered my shadows. Thanks in advance! ❤️
  5. Hello, Good People! I’m a one-man band, DIY type filmmaker and frequently find myself acting as my own cinematographer (and literally everything else unfortunately). I have great respect for the craft and would love to improve my skills until I can afford a proper professional to do the job. I’ve been shooting my own stuff forever and feel like I’ve lost perspective. Nice images aren’t enough and I need to work on my shot choices and motivation. People were very kind about it on reddit and I'm just looking for some different perspectives. I made this short (starring my mom) for a competition. I used the one LED panel I had to fill in some spots, but 95% was shot with DIY practicals ( loose light bulbs, mobile phones, etc...) and a whole lot of duct tape to keep them in place! ? Any tips or feedback would be tremendously appreciated! Thanks again! Here's the short: P. S. This was shot on the BMPCC4K with a 50mm f1.2 SLR Magic lens.
