  1. Thank you very much for this information, Nicolas.
  2. If I shot with HD cameras at a native 1.78:1 ratio (1920x1080), how should I crop to… 1.85:1? 2.39:1? On blu-rays I find different values and I don't know why. For example, with 1.85:1 I see black bars on the top and bottom with 22 pixels each (1920x1036) and with 20 pixels each (1920x1040). But on UHD blu-rays I always see the same thing, bars on the top and bottom with 42 pixels each (3840x2076). In the case of 2.39:1 something curious happens. Most blu-rays are 2.40:1 instead of 2.39:1, that is, black bars on the top and bottom with 140 pixels each (1920x800). I find 2.39:1 (1920x804), and black bars on the top and bottom with 138 pixels each, on rare occasions. What is the correct pixel value? 22, 20? 140, 138?
  3. Thank you very much. I'm pretty sure it's something Welles wanted. It's present in all the prints I've seen.
  4. I'm a big fan of Orson Welles' work and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what exactly happens with the aspect ratio in the Funhouse of "The Lady from Shanghai". Yesterday I re-watched this wonderful film and again that sequence caught my attention. We are talking about a 1947 film and it wasn't until 1953 when the new ratio change appeared. However, the top and bottom of the image as well as the sides appear cropped at times. Some people say it is because the film is damaged in that sequence, others that it is an effect desired by Welles. I think it's due to the latter, but I don't know.
  5. Yes, it is this article: https://www.asoundeffect.com/hereditary-sound/ I read it completely and it doesn't mention if the sound mix was 5.1 or 7.1. I'm sure Midsommar was 5.1 because I've found several articles where they say so, but nothing about Hereditary. I find it strange that it was Dolby 7.1 as imdb says when both the Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray have a 5.1 track.
  6. Last night I decided to watch "Hereditary" (2018) again after having seen "Midsommar" (2019) a few months ago. Both are, IMHO, 2 of the best horror films of this century and I think they have extraordinary sound mixes. I was able to find that the sound mix of "Midsommar" was 5.1 in theaters: In the case of Midsommar, when it was seen it theaters, it was a very sonically complex, 5.1 format movie. https://nugenaudio.com/ruy-garcia/ However, "Hereditary," shot a year earlier, was 7.1 according to imdb: Sound Mix Dolby Digital (Dolby 7.1) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7784604/technical?ref_=tt_spec_sm Does anyone know anything about the sound mix for "Hereditary"? Was it really 7.1 in theaters or 5.1 as "Midsommar"?
