  1. Hey everyone! If you have a spare moment, check out this 2min film I shot called ‘Land of Steel’. Shot on ARRI Amira using COOKE S2 Panchros. Vintage lenses re-engineered by TLS (40+ year old glass in modern housing) Shot in Port Talbot late last year. With Blade Runner (1982), Ridley Scott drew his vision of the future from this surreal and vast location. 3. G'day everyone, So, I compared some stuff and wrote a thing: http://dreamsmiths.com.au/blog/why-bigger-is-better-but-not-much-else If you're interested in the objective differences of large format cinematography to regular S35mm images, you might find it worthwhile. It's a quick test comparing regular S35mm Alexa, matched for both field of view and depth of field against the shiny new Vistavision-sized sensor of the Alexa LF, using spherical lenses. If you click through to the vimeo link, you can download the full 4.4k ProResHQ file in all its glory, which I'd highly recommend pulling into a piece of grading software to look at up close. The test certainly helped clarify a few things for me. Cheers, Mark
  4. Selling my Nikon F mount that fits Alexas (not Studio or Mini) manufactured by P+S Technik. Great condition with some minor cosmetic wear and tear from normal use. New mount is 800 EUR plus VAT. Asking £450 ex VAT & shipping.
  5. I've always had problems capturing strobes when shooting digital video (either the shutter misses the strobe entirely or only captures a portion of it). I've used the paparazzi light from Lightning Strikes before and it's great, but for this scene I need to see the lights strobe in the frame as the actor takes pictures (actor needs to be able to pull the trigger on them). 1) Any strobes out there that are good to capture digitally? Shooting on the Alexa mini 23.98. 2) Any tricks? I can change the shutter if necessary. Thanks. -Andrew
  6. I'm shooting a short action film in a few weeks, and we're looking to rent an EasyRig of some sort for smooth, handheld shots for the big fight scene. We're shooting this day on the Arri Alexa XT with Cooke mini S4 lenses. We have a choice of renting either an EasyRig Cinema 3500 N kit, or an EasyRig Vario 5 with Gimbal Rig Vest and 5" Extended Arm. I've never worked with an EasyRig before, so I'm looking for any pointers, as well as advice on which to get, if either would be better for shooting with a. larger camera system like the Alexa or what. I know the Vario 5 is intended for use with gimbal systems, and we are not using a Gimbal. Both EasyRigs are the same price, so is there any benefit to one over the other, for heavier cameras? A little about the film-the scene we're looking to shoot with the EasyRig setup is a swordfight, the plan is for it to be shot handheld, so that we can get different takes with different movement quickly. We will have a mix of low, high, close-up, and wide shots. Any advice appreciated, especially if you have any guidance for how to best work with EasyRigs! Thanks!

  16. Tongal is a community that primarily caters to the advertising industry by using social media to allow registered users to come up with the next great idea or production. Tongal has both a production category and an Ideation category. It is free to join and the prizes on the production side are usually into the thousands of dollars. On the Ideation side, not as much prize money but there is some money and prestige in having your idea selected as a winner as there are usually 500 to a 1,000 entries on the ideation side. Anyways, for those of you who use ARRI cameras, check out the Tongal / ARRI Contest, you could win an incredible prize package and there are multiple prizes. Since the pitch phase has already passed, you can still enter as a wildcard which basically means you read the rules and see if you have already worked on a production that would fit well with the goals of the contest. I could see a few members from this forum being among the winners, The contest closes Nov. 3, 2017 at Noon, so there is time to submit an entry.

  19. A client approached me a while back with an ambitious brief: All slo-mo, all trucking, early magic hour whenever possible, subject: triathletes training on the National Mall in Washington DC USA, a notoriously over-policed location. And there was pretty much no budget. Meaning no permits, no pro hands but me, very limited prep. Part of the brief included flying a drone over the DC Potomac. We spent money on that, couldn't get the waiver. To be continued. The intent was to shoot all 120FPS with a cinema camera, ProRes 4444, top glass, and all shots incorporating camera movement with the subjects being swimmers, cyclists and runners. Fairly tough on pretty much no budget. After a ton of looking, including talking to a guy with ASC after his name, I concluded Arri Alexa Mini was the only way to go.Then came the mount and stabilization problems. The rig I came up with consisted of a Cloud Mount, MOVI Pro, Alexa Mini, Zeiss Ultra Primes, everything remote controlled from the bed of a pickup truck, or the deck of a boat. I originally intended to use the Cloud Mount using its magnets, but between the truck’s body curves and thin steel, it was wiser to go with suction cups. Made me nervous, but worked fine. I did have to up-rate some of the cables on the Cloud Mount as I was pushing the envelope on weight. We tried our utmost to shoot the magic hour, so close attention to ISO and shutter angle were essential to protect DOF. For the earliest shots, I used 356 degrees, thereby gaining about a stop and a half in exposure latitude to use as I liked. I opted to stop down as we needed all the help we could get with focus. Originally I intended to have the producer/director operate the camera while I ran exposure and focus, but MOVI’s Mimic turned out to be a unique challenge in hand-eye coordination and technical management. Moving targets from a moving platform with an unfamiliar and touchy controller. Good times. Mimic was balky, requiring frequent fiddling and resets. We lost a day when the rental house couldn’t make Mimic work at all. The whole thing was extra-tricky as I was the only professional on the gig and had my hands full managing everything from BNC's to LP-E6's. And it was HOT. Danger hot. So I handed off focus and exposure, and drove the rig. Mixed results there, mainly on focus, but it couldn’t be helped. Out of pocket for rented gear, excluding the borrowed truck and boat? $3K USD. Shot the stills too, Pentax 645Z, RAW, three big old Metz's with a distinctly 1970's vibe. Go ahead. Be brutal. The green cast DID NOT happen in-camera. Client. Here goes: http://hugo-creative.com/work/district-multisport/ Cheers. JS
  20. Hi I am a Cinematographer on a feature film that we're going to start filming in September on the ARRI Alexa EV camera. We have the SXS cards and can max film in ProRes 4444. My question is, is it worth trying to find faster cards and then film in ARRI raw? Or do I get almost the same quality out of the ProRes 4444. The film is properly going to end up on a DCP 2K or 4K. We are setting the camera up fro 16:9 full and then use a 1:2:35 mask to frame after. Thank you, Henrik A. Meyer www.henrikameyer.com

  22. I am working on a project involving heavy use of green screen to key in all the windows of an antique train. My issue is the lighting is looking very flat as the green screen will always be blocking any natural or cheated light coming from the window. Hoe do others create depth in a situation like this? I am also struggling where to place the key and fill. Un-lit test image attached.
  23. Looking for some exposure help when shooting moody scenes with the FS5 - I have seen a lot of people recommending setting the zebra to 70 percent ( which makes things pretty bright on the monitor for a darker scene/ is this something people only do in LOG? ) are there any other usable on camera exposure tool other than zebra?. Don't use Sony's much and am more used to Using a REC 709 LUT or false colors within my ALEXA eyepiece to expose. Also, should I be switching from LOG3 to cine gamma for lower light situations? Also any general tips for exposing low light scenes without crushing the blacks?
  24. Up for sale is my personal set of Zeiss/Opton Super-speed lenses. Ready to shoot. There are Five (5) Zeiss/Opton Super-speed, super 35mm full frame lenses. They are MkI/MkII glass. All PL mounts. All in near outstanding shape. With 80mm fronts, and follow focus. Recently thoroughly serviced in New York, and available for a check out. They are as follows; 25mm - T1.2 - 11, 35mm - T1.2 - 11, 50mm - T1.3 - 11, 85mm - T1.4 - 11, 135mm - T2.0 - 16 Plus 18mm Lomo wide T1.5 - 22 The last one is a Lomo lens, of very high standard glass. It was bought and added to the Zeiss/Opton set, because the glass was comparable. (The only drawback to this set is that the 18mm Lomo has a 110mm front as opposed to the 80mm fronts of the Zeiss/Opton. Thus an additional matte box.) This make it a six lens set. Front & rear caps and carry case included. $29,500.00 US$ woftam@erols.com email for service report, greater details, and more photos.
  25. hello all, I'm starting a film next week, shooting with an Alexa mini, UHD, RAW...almost all night interior and on location.. I wanted to pick your brains on LUT packages...is there a series of LUTs you recommend for download or purchase? I have used the built-in LUTs of the Alexa mini before but I want to have a larger selection of display-gamma and colour space for my director on the set...any suggestions?
