Hi guys! After some research, I made a little chart one every rich man's favorite camera, the Alexa, which digs into how it really works. So I thought I might as well share it. The content holds true for every Alexa I believe, since they all have pretty much the same sensors and algorithms (even the Alexa 65 I assume, who consists of three Alexa sensors merged). On the right of the table are the only available curves to my knowledge, the LogC ones. Every other curves isn't, but should be available, so here they are. Where did I find this stuff ? A combination of gathering bits of informations here and there, and the ability to think like an Arri R&D guy I guess (they always seem to make the most logical choices in sensor architecture). Hi! I'm shooting a film handheld with the arri alexa plus 4:3 and the focus puller is going to use WCU-4. I have a lightweight matte box that fits 15' rods. When we put the wireless motor on the rods it is out of reach for the lens, being that the rods are too close to the lens for the motor to reach on to it. I'm wondering how we can fit this on without using rods at all. Is this possible? If I clamp the matte box right to the lens. -

Hello friends and fellow cinematographers, Not sure if anyone have posted about this topic but here it goes... Other than being able to shoot RAW from the Alexa, practically and to-the-eyes and after all the proper post correction and all, is there a huge difference between raw from Alexa and the proress 4444 XQ from the Amira? I'm sure there is a difference, but is the difference too great or are most people just being an unconscious pixel-peepers? I feel much of the discussion have put too much attention and emphasize on this issues and on the argument of which is 'truely' cinematic or fitting for cinematic use and I just want to get a simple answer once and for all. Beasts Of No Nation has just been released worldwide on Netflix today and will be in a few selected theaters in the US as well, I've seen it this morning and found it to be absolutely outstanding. Contrary to Fukunaga's previous projects (except his Sleepwalking In The Rift short shot on a 5D), this wasn't shot on film, but rather, as he said it in an interview on Hitfix, on the Alexa with Panavision C-series lenses, he talked about shooting it on super 16 at first, but there were no labs around and it would have taken a week for them to get the dailies back and it was just impossible, so he chose the Alexa. I wanted to know what you guys think about it, it looks absolutely gorgeous, very naturalistic, with those characteristic anamorphic flares, blue streaks, and barrel distortion, the Panavision anamorphic look, it also had some beautiful bloomy qualities on whites in one scene in particular, also, Fukunaga not only wrote and directed the movie, he also DPed and operated the camera himself as his camera operator pulled his hamstring one day in. Quite the astonishing feat ! See this movie.

Hey guys, I've loved The Leftovers since season 1, but season 2 has just aired its second episode and I remain stunned by the cinematography, which is now done by Michael Grady (Todd McMullen for most of season 1). It's shot on the Alexa, but it looks SO distinct from everything and anything else I've seen shot on the Alexa, it feels like there's some kind of film grain added because there's a very real and vivid texture to the image, a real patina, the colors pop, but not in a harsh digital way, it doesn't look overly digital, it just really stands out, the lighting also looks beautiful, very colorful. I know they use Primos on this, but I wonder what anyone else think about this, any idea on the film grain or the look they're getting? I'm a film guy mainly, and the only stuff that impressed me on digital so far has been Skyfall, Prisoners, Sicario, A Most Violent Year (yet to see Selma, shot by Bradford Young as well), Drive, Elysium, The Social Network, Gone Girl, Her, Nightcrawler, The Revenant and The Leftovers.

Hi, I have a music video shoot and we're currently deciding cameras. I prefer the look of the Alexa and want to push the Mini as we're mostly on steadicam. However we have a lot of strobe lighting during a performance sequence, making the Dragon with motion mount seem like the right way to go. Is the Studio the only option for choosing Alexa when dealing with strobes? We're shooting a range of speeds, ramping from 24 to 60fps. Thanks, Chris

Im up to DP my third feature and we are shooting for 20 days. Its pretty ambitious for the budget but we arent doing anything super crazy - it is very much like the movie Prisoners in tone, story and cinematography. The Producer is wanting to shoot single camera, as to not have to spend money on the extra B camera, crew and post costs that come with more footage, and instead is in favor of getting more gear to make a better A camera. My initial thought was that we would need two cameras to make our days (I shot two cameras on my last feature, which was a comedy, and being able to leap frog with setup/shooting and get extra shots in when needed I felt saved us alot of time, and that is what I am pretty comfortable with. my first feature was single camera, but it was all handheld and a much much smaller scale.) This show is 100 percent sticks and dolly, some jib with occasional steadicam. Another thought was to shoot single camera mostly from a small technocrane (thinking the mini 6'-12' technocrane ,moviebird 17 or chapmans Hydrascope 15', I want to use it for interiors and my thought was anything larger might be too large for int scenes.) now I have never used a technocrane, but from what I have read and talking with my Key grip, I have heard they can save alot of time on set, and much are faster than dolly and sticks because I could get most if not all all my shots from a single setup. but they are expensive for sure.. Something to consideration is that I am working with an awesome first time director, but for his sake I thought single camera might be easier for him so he can focus on the one frame and not have his(and my own) attention shift between two cameras, so I feel the end product could benefit from single camera. And making him as comfortable as possible is high on my priority list (I normally operate, but Im choosing to get an operator so I can be with him at video village and support him the best I can) Another idea is having a remote head on a fisher 23 Jib arm on the Fisher 10 dolly in place of a technocrane like deakins does. I have my own thoughts, but in yalls opinion, how would that compare to the technocrane approach? I would love some opinions and advice! Getting a 2nd camera package and crew for it, or single camera on a small technocrane or remote head on jib? The producer is pretty open and trusts me, and I know if I make my case for either one, there is a good chance I'll get what I ask for. Thank you all so much! Chaz
