  3. Sean Porter says some really interesting things about 'beating up' the digital image, to sort of pull out that natural grain, and to give it some character. What do you think? 6. Macbeth Trailer IMDB Link http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2884018/?ref_=nm_flmg_cin_4 "Macbeth, a Thane of Scotland, receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders his king and takes the throne for himself" Director Justin Kurzel Cinematographer Adam Arkapaw I watched Macbeth on the cinema 3 weeks ago and was very reluctant to write about it because I did not know what to say about it as it made me think about cinematography, art, filmmaking, life and everything else. However, I watched it today on the cinema again and I could not help but writing about the movie. There are sometimes when art and filmmaking come together, we have examples from the early cinema (Berlin) to contemporary cinema (Waking Life). In my opinion, the movies which mix art and cinema usually do not have a very good distribution and it is very difficult to see them out of the cinema festivals (Sitges, Sundance, etc). What we have on the screen nowadays is a movie which tries to bring that to the masses and it works perfectly. A couple of years ago we had a very interesting adaptation called "Anna Karenina", directed by Joe Wright, Mr. Wright decided to do something absolutely different and staged everything as if it were a play, it was a very risky movement but it was one of the most fenomenal movies of the year. Although "Macbeth" does not go that far as to staged everything, Justin Kurzel created a universe where he introduces art, paintings, movement, magic realism and plays with the characters' fates as if he were a demiurge, Shakespeare himself but using all the possible imagination to produce a stunning piece of art so it is as risky as "Anna Karenina" was. Imagination and imaginative, those are the words that I would use to describe a movie that should be in the MOMA and the TATE on a permanent exhibition to show people how to create a world through images which create sensations. The very first act and the third act are just marvellous pieces of art by themselves, the central act is a bit less spectacular because it involves Macbeth's madness and it is told in a more narrative - linear way but it is stunning by itself. I think that this movie deserves being seen on a big screen so you can just be immersed in it. Of course, there were people who left the screen room where I was watching it (in both cases) but those who remained got a beautiful reward. Thanks to all the crew who made this movie possible if you ever read this. Have a good day!
  7. Hi guys, i'm going to shoot music video, the big part of it is in House, my camera settings should be 800asa 2.0 f 120 fps with 1/240 shutter speed and 800asa 4.0 f 24 fps with 1/48 shutter, it will be handheld. My question is: Can i pre light it for both settings, so i can just change settings of the camera in the middle of shooting from 120fps to 24fps and back? Flickering for me is fine but not so much. 9. This is from a project of mine about Australian films called AnyCameraWillDo.com I though you Guys n Gals might be interested and I'm keen to spread a positive message about film making :) DOP Bonnie Elliott on These Final Hours: The heavy sun beats down, the sky burns a deep orange and the heat sears the landscape. So bright is the hot light that the only reprieve is the dark sweaty shadows of indoors. This is what Bonnie Elliott’s apocalypse looks like, a harsh beautiful end to the world in Australian feature film These Final Hours. AnyCameraWillDo sat down with DOP Bonnie Elliott to talk about constructing the look of the apocalypse in Australian feature film These Final Hours. Bonnie sites her start at UTS where she had the opportunity to experiment on many short films with a Bolex film camera as the beginning of the look used in the film. The Bolex she used at UTS had a filter slot, which allowed her to cut out small gel filters from a swatch book and put them behind the lens. It was this process along with working with the very unforgiving work print that led to the range of mistakes, pleasant surprises and plethora of learning experience that built her knowledge that she brought to bear on These Final Hour. These Final Hours Trailer: Director Zak Hilditch had a clear vision for the film He wanted to start the film yellow and move through orange and finally finish with a red hue. This visual direction led Bonnie to do a lot of experimentation with glass filters in front of the lens including filters with names such as ‘Apricot’, ‘Tabaco’ and ‘Antique Suede’. These days with the option to do so much in the grading suite it’s unusual to shoot so much of the film with such an effect in camera. But if the film is going to be pushed in that direction in the grade why not do it in camera and save time? Not only does it save time, but creating the look in camera has a very different effect and a very different feel Bonnie says. The DOP describes the way the light is affected by the Apricot filter with the color, the light and the smoke as something that you just cant achieve with a grade. Bonnie Elliott on These Final Hours: Vimeo: Perth proved to be a harsh place to shoot with very little cloud cover. This provided the These Final Hours crew with a consistent light situation but required the DOP to embracing the Australian sun and use the harsh, sharp midday light to help form the look of the film and tell the story. To extend this look to the indoors Bonnie used large light sources, lighting the indoors from outside giving a strong sense of heat permeating the darker space. These Final Hours was shot over 5 weeks, making use of extensive preplanning and preparation. Although there was certainly a space for adlibbing the film was executed closely to the original planned look. The film is about the end of the world through the humanity of the people involved not about special effects. It is a complicated film about how people react to their own mortality. To this end the visual decisions, though unusual, really were right choice for the story. Bonnie Elliot certainly live up to her own advice “Don’t be afaird to be bold”. Link to the article: http://anycamerawilldo.com/bonnie_elliott/ Feel free to let me know if this is posted in the wrong place or is not really the right stuff to be posting on this forum. I'm new here, just wanting to share our wee project and thought you Guys n Gals migh like it. Nat J

  15. I was wondering what equipment I should buy or rent for people paying for my services? For example if I am shooting a commercial for a mural being made do I rent the necessary equipment so I can get reimbursed? Or should I buy a camera and rent the lenses that is necessary for the shoot? I really like the Arri Alexa right now. Also what equipment I should have on me at all times if I just filming a shoot with me and one other person? Should I have the best boy kit on me like having gaffer tape? Here is a list of things I think I should buy. CTB Gels- The most common uses are to convert the color temperature of tungsten light toward daylight. Correcting tungsten to match daylight. CTO Gels- Match the color of the Tungsten Lights to the Color of the Environment(Daylight) Correcting daylight to match tungsten. Natural Density Gels- Cutting Light Levels Without Diffusing The Light or changing the light tempature. To Fight Over Exposure without sacrificing light. Diffusion (Frost) Gels- Diffusion Gel is available in various densities from nearly clear to a dense milky white that diffuses the light without changing the color temperature. There is a loss of output as the density (thickness) increases. Adding diffusion makes the light softer as it makes the size of the light source larger. Diffusion= softening light. Lowel Tota-Flector - 8 x 12"- ReFlecting off shiny objects. Litepanels Traveler Trio Package - contains: (2) 1X1 MONO Flood Daylight; (1) 1X1 MONO Spot Daylight; (3) 3-Riser Fold up Stand; (1) 4-Lite Rolling Case
  16. Hi. I shooting a little narrative film on the Arri Alexa camera. We don´t have the time to shoot a test before we start shooting and I watched some test online about how high you can go with the ISO in the camera in low light locations. Do anyone in here have good experience with the Alexa camera? And how high can I put the cameras ISO with out seeing to much noise in the blacks? Thanks, Henrik www.henrikameyer.com
  17. Hi. Most of my narrative films are shot on RED camera´s. I have a job where we might shoot on Arri Alexa camera. I heart that post production and color correction is easier with Alexa. Any in here with great experience with the Alexa workflow:-)? Best, Henrik A. Meyer. www.henrikameyer.com
