  1. Hey Guys, I'm an aspiring cinematographer and I am wondering how best to spend my money to invest in this field. At first, I was dead sent on buying on new camera (looking at the A7s II or the Ursa Mini); however, I have now begun to consider investing in lighting equipment, and opting to rent a camera whenever the need arises. Basically I'm torn: For $3,000 I could buy just a camera body, or I could get an Arri lighting package (x2 150w, 300w, 650w, 1k) and two 4' 2-bank kino lights w/ ballasts off of Ebay. My questions are: Can anyone provide insight into what would be the best and most beneficial course of action? I also have another question based off of the Kino lights: is the output of a 4' 2-bank Kino the same as the output of a 2' 4-bank Kino? What are the benefits to either or? Lastly, is there a better investment I could make that isn't a camera or lighting equipment? Thanks again, and any insight will be greatly appreciated! -Sam

  6. I have the opportunity to purchase a used Arri D-21 from a local rental shop for $6000. I have heard that the D-21 footage has a unique film like quality that surpasses most cameras, even the Alexa. Although it's dynamic range is limited to 11 stops and low lightcapabilities seem to be quite poor. Can those of you who have used the D-21 please share your experiences.
  7. Hi everyone! I will get my hands on the Arri SXU-1 System for the first time and i was wondering a bit about lens data. Is it possible to get lens data to the hand unit with a SMC-1 motor controller or do i have to step up to the WCU-4 system? We are on a budget and i can't afford the WCU-4 and it is not entirely necessary to have the lens data, it would be nice though :P And if anyone used it before, how does it handle? Are the CLM-4 Motor strong? I will be using Zeiss HS mkIII and a LMB-15 mattebox (clip-on). I've hade some issues with heden motors that aren't strong enough to pull the lens barrel, especially in cold weather.

  9. I just bought a motor for my Arriflex 2b. It is an Arriflex 24f constant speed motor. When I held the two together, the gear in the center of the motor and the gear in the camera are nowhere near each other, and it looks like there is another gear that is missing. I noticed the cine60 base has an intermediate composite gear, is this the same case in the Arri motor? Can I still purchase one of these gears should they exist? Thanks, Max May DP and Writer: Buteo-Gallus Films

  11. Hey I just wanted to start a conversation about the new Arri SkyPanels and see what everyone thinks about them. Feel free to point out things to improve on, things it does well, etc. I just bought one of the S60-C fixtures and have been finding lots of ways to use it. A lot of DPs I work with have been digging it too. For me the selling factor is control. Very quick and easy color and intensity tuning, and an extremely wide range of adjustments at that. I try to have DMX control of everything too so this unit fits in perfectly to my Luminair workflow. There are a few small things I don't like: color can be skippy when you're doing through hues. The intensity knob is weirdly sensitive sometimes and very unresponsive other times. Unpredictable. Also I tried controlling my fixture via RJ45 instead of DMX recently and I got no data. Not sure why it didn't work. Let er rip! Drew Valenti Gaffer - LA drewvalenti@gmail.com

  20. Hey guys, I've loved The Leftovers since season 1, but season 2 has just aired its second episode and I remain stunned by the cinematography, which is now done by Michael Grady (Todd McMullen for most of season 1). It's shot on the Alexa, but it looks SO distinct from everything and anything else I've seen shot on the Alexa, it feels like there's some kind of film grain added because there's a very real and vivid texture to the image, a real patina, the colors pop, but not in a harsh digital way, it doesn't look overly digital, it just really stands out, the lighting also looks beautiful, very colorful. I know they use Primos on this, but I wonder what anyone else think about this, any idea on the film grain or the look they're getting? I'm a film guy mainly, and the only stuff that impressed me on digital so far has been Skyfall, Prisoners, Sicario, A Most Violent Year (yet to see Selma, shot by Bradford Young as well), Drive, Elysium, The Social Network, Gone Girl, Her, Nightcrawler, The Revenant and The Leftovers.

  22. I've seen that you can only rent the Alexa 65 through their Arri Rental network. Out of curiosity, does anyone know what the rental costs are? I'm thinking they must be ginormous right now, but i'm really wondering.
  23. I cracked the mirror shutter on my SR3 and have been having a hell of a time trying to find a new one. I did locate an SR2 mirror shutter so I thought I might be able to take off the mirror and replace the cracked SR3 mirror. I'm not talking about the whole mechanism, just the mirror. Does anyone know if those two mirrors are compatible? They appear to be the same, but I've had difficulty finding exact specs on either.
  24. Hi! I'm downscaling my Super 16-kit and it's time to let go of these beautiful lenses. First got them to use with an Ikonoskop A-cam dII but lately I've used them for s16 film cameras (Arri Sr2, Aaton a-minima and Arri 416). Actually also tried them on a Gh4 (with mft-pl-adapter) and from 12mm and up they cover the sensor in 4k mode. They are in really good mechanical and optical condition. Some paint wear on the housings but all focus marks and text is clearly visible. So what I've got is: Zeiss Super Speed mkII Super 16mm lenses. All T1.3. 9,5mm, 12mm, 25mm and 50mm. Will sell individual lenses or all at once. I'm hoping to get a deal done quickly so first come first served (hope that's the correct english expression for it…). Prices reasonable, please contact me if you are seriously interested and we'll discuss it. Lenses are located in Stockholm but I will ship world wide (but EU preferred). Best regards/Kalle Folke, Sweden www.kallefolke.se
