  1. Hi All!, So I'm doing a project in an upcoming month or so and I need suggestions. I'm shooting most likely on a BlackMagic 2.5k camera and am looking to achieve a "gritty" look. I understand that it's not just the camera or lenses solely that would help achieve this but I'm curious if there are any suggestions as far as lenses that would help me in the right direction. I've shot multiple times with Rokinons on different cameras and have noticed this has creating a "gritty" dark look but I'm looking for a step up from this. Also what filters would help with this too. ND filters I presume? Thank you!
  2. Hi, I'm planning on applying to a film school this summer, for a directing course. My main focus has always been directing, with cinematography being both a fascinating hobby and something I've had to do for the ultra low budget films I've made. Now, the requirements are that you submit at least two films, of which at least one "made on film (16mm, super 16mm or 35mm)". I've got plenty of digital films to submit, but nothing on film. So I have to make a new one. I've never shot anything on film and, as much as I'd like to have this experience, it would be very expensive. Even with clearance stock, if you factor in renting the camera, developing, scanning, then making the final prints, it would run into the thousands. So I've thought that, since I would be scanning the film anyway and edit it in an nle, I could forgo shooting on film and shoot digitally instead, making a final print on film. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera has the right sensor size, dynamic range and resolution, so the way I figured, it would look very close to film. And the grain would be in the final print anyway. Might be a weird or crazy plan, but that's why I'm running it people who've worked on film before. Any suggestions welcome! Thanks, Paul. P.S. Regarding the ethics of it, I'm applying to a Directing course. Directing is the same, no matter the medium. If it was a Cinematography course it would've been a different story, but as it is, I seems like a pretty random requirement.
  3. Hello, I was would love to hear your thoughts on the best way to expose a bar scene. We're using a the 4k Blackmagic Production Camera and I have no idea how it responds to be under-exposed. The Arri Amira produced very good results in low-key scenes on our last film but the type of film we're doing needed a lighter camera. I've attached an image of the location. As you can see we have a ton of space and there is a beam that we can G-clamp lights to and also a ledge. OTS right there is a bar which has air-conditioners above it which would be OK to tape fluourescents to. We can't damage the walls! The scene is a guy who takes a girl to a really crass, tasteless joint full of pink neon and cocktail umbrellas (I actually like bars liek this but there you go). The director wants to go walkabout with the camera with a DJI Ronin so the lighting has to go above. I was going to gel Osram De Luxe fluorescents behind the bar and high on the walls and then stick a 1k PAR above the table Bob Richardson style. Once that is done, I was thinking just get a rim light raking the room from the far side and have put a four bank Kino Flo through some 216 to fill the profile shot of the couple at the table. If this sounds like an insane way to do it, feel free to correct me, I'm relatively inexperienced and open to suggestion. I liked what Dante Spinotti did for bar scenes in LA Confidential. He somehow achieved great modelling and depth. Many thanks and good luck to you all! Best regards, Haydn
  4. I've been working with video as an amateur now for 5 years. After I graduated college last year I decided it was time to move from a DSLR to a more cinema oriented body. I went with the Canon C100 and thanks to a grant I won in my last semester, I was able to purchase the Atomos Ninja Blade 2 as well. Right now, I am working as a DP on a small-budget horror feature. After this is through, I have my projects I'd like to embark on, BUT I may lose the Ninja Blade (because the grant was through the school and they want to/have the right to keep it). I understand this severely limits the recording capability of the C100. I read a thread the other night on this forum discussing the Blackmagic Pocket Cam. Now, I am wondering if I've made a mistake choosing the C100. Or if maybe the BMPCC would make my projects cheaper to achieve as I'm yet to purchase any of my own glass or rigging for the C100. My problem, I suppose, is this: Do I press on with the C100 and buy rigging and some glass for it (and unfortunately a new Ninja Blade) or do I liquidate and invest in the BMPCC and some glass for it? Or do I just sit tight with what I have and rent until I have enough money for something substantially better than either?
  5. Selling my old Gear as i have a raven now. Looking to get $1250 for this setup. All items have cosmetic wear. Sigma 18-35mm is Nikon mount, Speedbooster is the pocket cinema camera version and both have no issue. The pocket camera glass in front of the sensor needs replacement or just removed; Would have done this but would rather sell at a give away price. Location NYC PM me if interested Cheers
  6. Hey guys, what are your thoughts on the new Blackmagic Ursa? In need of 4K so I can be more flexible with clients when they want to zoom in on an image. Is it worth the buy? Thanks!

  8. Hello everybody ! I wrote a table comparing most of our favorite cameras and their technical specifications (Sensor info, recording info, weight, Mount, Power Consumption, Price ...). I was bored searching in the manuals and documentations, so this should make it a bit easier ! DIGITAL CAMERA COMPARISON Next time, I'd like to make it dynamic with an auto ranking when we click on a particular category. Cheers, Romain
  9. I have five (5) brand new Blackmagic DeckLink Studio breakout cables (item CABLE-BDLKSTUDIO) still in their packaging. I'm selling them for $75 each. Let me know if you need one.
  10. I recently aquired a BMCC, which lends a couple of questions. Now, I see that it is common to use adapters with this camera. Which lenses are great choices for this camera? And are there fully manual zooms under $1000? Also, is Metabones speedbooster with EF lenses a good option, or are the lenses just too big for the sensor? Thanks.
  11. Good evening guys. So, I am looking into optimizing what I get out of my RAW files. And I am not sure I am doing that right now. My workflow now, is 2,5k RAW in Resolve, and then exporting for further editing in Premiere and AFX. What kind of bitrate would you use going from Resolve into Premiere? And what is sufficient for web and cinema use? Thanks!

  13. Good night guys, we're shooting a short film in about a month, and I'm planning to use a BMCC 2.5K. It's a low budget film so we'll be using some LED panels and Rokinon lenses. However, there's a night scene, so I'd like to know if there's any recommended exposure settings that you suggest. I haven't visited the location at night yet, but I know it's not pitch black, and that there are some practicals. Also, we're not looking for a high contrast/ very dramatic look, mostly soft light. The only time I've shot night scenes with the BM I used ISO 800 and played with wide apertures (T/1.5 the widest) and I found it delivered a decent image. However, even after the color grading there was some noticeable noise. Is there something specific that you suggest so I can improve the image quality or is that about the best I can get? Thanks in advance guys. Daniel

  16. I just read an article (http://nofilmschool.com/2016/02/cameras-used-sundance-2016-filmmakers-why) about the cameras used by DOP for the films at Sundance 2016, I notice there’re a bunch of film shot entirely or partially with BlackMagic, and cameras such as 7D, 5D Mark3 and C100. I see there’s no Sony a7 series cameras being used. What do you think you guys about the new Sony a6300 expected for march 2016? could it live up to be a camera for low budget film, with external record? being the internal sampling 4:2:0? what could the market be for it? or why would people prefer something like Black Magic and 5D Mark 3? Someone out here who shoots with the Sony a7 series and prefer it over something like BlackMagic? I’d love to hear any personal experience :) it’d be cool to open a discussion over these cameras

  18. Hello all, So I film on the Blackmagic Pocket Cam, which is infamous for how fast it heats up. Now I've never had a problem with it overheating, I have generally been filming in A/C cooled indoor areas. However, I'm beginning production for an upcoming film, and most of the filming will be done outside... oh, and lest I forget, I happen to live in the great state of Texas where the average Summer temp. is around 96 degrees Fahrenheit. I'm a little worried about it overheating in the outdoor temperatures. So my question is: how do you keep a camera cooled down without damaging it with ice/water?
  19. I’m selling my Blackmagic Cinema Camera package with 2 cameras and an extensive set of Leica R lenses with MFT adapters. One of the great things about this package is that the Metabones Speed Booster adds a stop to every lens, effectively turning a f2 lens into an f1.4 lens. This speed boost happens optically with no significant loss of quality. The Speed Booster also changes the camera’s crop factor to about 1.5x or Super 35mm size. You can add lens gears to the Leicas and use a follow-focus rig and matte box. I’ve shot several professional projects with this package, including a TV show for the Pivot network and this piece for Whole Foods (which is not fully color-corrected): And this spec commercial: The package has never been rented without me and has only been used on a handful of projects. Everything is in great shape. The Leicas are very sharp but the look has much more character and feel than modern lenses. The focus mechanism on the lenses is silky smooth as well (unlike a lot of still lenses, like many Nikon manual focus lenses). Listed below are the prices for each of the components. If you buy the entire package, I’ll reduce the total cost from $11,358 to $10,000. Let me know if you have questions or want to see additional photos. Thanks! 20. Hello all, As I've been expanding my crew and becoming more involved with just directing actors, I've been looking to buy an external monitor for my BMPCC so I won't have to work back and forth to check shots. My question is, do any of you guys have a suggestion for an external monitor for the Blackmagic that is under the price of $200? Thanks! John

  22. I am selling a brand new Allsteady-7 3 axis gimbal (from TurboAce). It was bought last year, has only been tested 2 times (works flawlessly). I am selling it because for the past year i have devoted my time to photography, thus no longer being in need of some tools that just lye around the house. for details on what it does exactly (it is basically a heavy duty gimbal): http://www.turboace.com/allsteady7.aspx it comes with 2 batteries, charger, monitor arm and balance stand. The item is located in Bucharest, Romania. So i would prefer to sell it in Europe (i guess it would be more convenient for the buyer too). price is 3600$ + transport fees (keep in mind it is new).

  24. Hi all. I wonder if anyone owns the Nikon G to BMPCC Speed Booster from Metabones? It says it works with Nikon G lens. But my question is: Would this work with a Zeiss ZF.2 Nikon mount? I've seen reviews of many people mentioning only Nikkor an Sigma lenses used with this adapter. But I need to know if it works with the Zeiss. Thanks, Flavio
  25. Hello! I have just finished a final cut of my new movie and would to color grade it. I heard something about buying a specialised video card for precise video playback (in terms of color reproduction). I found Blackmagic Shuttle as a relatively cheap (200$) option but I am not sure if it will do the trick? Also, one of my colleagues who knows about grading more than myself told me that I should be connecting Blackmagic shuttle to the minitor via S-Video out, not DVI or HDMI as they are not able to reproduce the colours precisely. Do you guys have any suggestions in whether which connection type should I choose for the best color precision? My movie was shot on a Mark III, H.264 in Full HD. I will rent a JVC Broadcast monitor for my Color grading work.
