I recently a purchased a Tobin TCS TTL and noticed my mounting screws are way different than all the ones I’ve seen, my screws are sunken in and I have to use a flat head to screw them in where as all the other TCS TTL I’ve seen having little knobs that you can just twist with your fingers. Does anyone know what kind of screws/knobs these are and if I can replace them or even find them?

Hello, I am based in Sweden and am currently looking for a working Paillard-Bolex H16 Reflex / REX series 16mm camera. I am exploring either: a direct trade involving my Nikon R10 Super 8 camera, or a partial trade: Nikon R10 + some additional cash from my side, depending on the exact Bolex model, condition, accessories, and servicing history. The Nikon R10: is fully working has been film tested recently is in very good cosmetic condition includes the original carrying case includes the original filter key Here are links to supporting material: Film scan example: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Am-uuAJfqkJEmlniaME5WzN4Il7qs1b3?usp=sharing Detailed images of the camera: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1fbhBAzlpIv_UEzlGv6oYn12w3SJ1_iIA?usp=sharing I understand values vary significantly depending on: exact Bolex model: H16 Reflex / REX 1–5 etc. whether the camera has recent CLA/service history included RX lenses or accessories overall mechanical and cosmetic condition I am primarily interested in a mechanically reliable working camera rather than a collector-grade cosmetic example. If anyone has a suitable Bolex H16 Reflex / REX camera and would consider either a direct or partial trade, please feel free to contact me. Thank you!

A couple of adapters and a diopter away from testing. It’s not pretty but it should work. Not a flat base model, but the rails are as sturdy as I could wish for. You can literally swing the camera off them—I only did it once…

I came across this youtube video of a Bolex Video Manual. At minute 1:03 a photo of filmmaker Giuseppe Baresi is shown. In the background there is a Bolex (I think its a H16 M), with some type of motor on it. I attach a photo of it here. I can't make out the writing and I'm just really curious about this. Does anybody here know something about this specific device? Thanks!

Like the title, how would I achieve a motion blur on a bolex camera, as well as if I want the only thing in focus is someone standing in a crowd.

I‘m just putting out some feelers to see if there might be any interest in a 2 or 3 day Bolex Service Workshop for people in the EU or UK. It would be held in Amsterdam in January 2026, conducted by myself, a professional camera/lens technician with 20 years experience working on Bolexes. I’m often asked where people can learn movie camera maintenance, perhaps this is one way to pass on some knowledge. My thoughts were that people could bring a camera they want serviced, plus some tools, and we can go through the process together. Ideally it would be people who have tinkered with a Bolex before, but want to have a deeper understanding of how their camera works and what an overhaul procedure entails. Feel free to message me or email cinetinker@gmail.com if interested.

Hello All! I bought a used Bolex Non Reflex at the beginning of the year, and it came with one 15mm lens. With it being a C-Mount and necessary for the lens to be Anti Reflex, I've been having a hard time tracking down and finding lenses that work with my camera that aren't absolutely busted or outrageously priced beaten up glass. With all of that being said, I'm looking for a small guide or list of what lenses work best with non reflex. Or even just some suggestions from people who had used newer lenses or adapted different lenses to the non reflex. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I can't seem to identify why or where theses straight lines are coming from. Theses lines are not on the entire rolls, they come and go. I've completely cleaned my bolex multiple times. Any ideas ?

I thought I’d better start a new thread with this, as it’s tangential to the thread it was originally added to: I believe this is an MC-17b motor. I bought it without cables or other accessories in as-is condition. Getting it to run was not difficult, but it was showing signs of corrosion on the fixing bolts so I thought I’d have a peek inside. After dismantling and cleaning I set out to discover how it was meant to work—particularly the “friction drive” mechanism I’d seen mentioned in several related online texts. What I’d originally thought was a clutch/friction mechanism (photo centre) turned out to be something more like a shock absorber made up of several wavy washers and tensioner rings, all pinned to the main gear—which was initially seized onto the outer shaft by corrosion. I’ve studied the manual (which by the way states the motor runs on ball bearings—there are none), and I’m still no closer to understanding what constitutes the friction drive, and how it’s supposed to work. The manual describes mechanical operation: Pressing the motor lever fully home when the motor is not connected to the camera results in the motor running continuously with the drive shaft engaged. When connected to the camera this would mean the camera drive shaft would also be rotating continuously. Is this what’s meant to happen? With the drive motor attached and running, and the camera lever at the “O” position (motor disengaged), is the camera in effect “idling” until the front or side shutter release is engaged? Is this also why the manual advises the motor should not be left on in this state for more than 15minutes (wear on the camera mechanism)? Thank you for reading this far, I’m aware that my assumptions may all be incorrect, in which case I’m happy to be corrected.

Hi everyone! I recently shot on 16mm for the first time using a Bolex H16 SBM with a Vario Switar 16-100mm zoom lens. After getting the scans back I noticed that it was severely out of focus in a lot of the takes. It would often be sharp for the first couple of frames of the take and then shift focus considerably even though I was not shifting focus via the lens. I was wondering if this might be an issue with the pressure plate in the Bolex, where it might be slightly moving backwards as the film travels through it, affecting the focal plane. I’m certain I had the pressure plate locked into place correctly when shooting. I used a tape measure from the focal plane of the Bolex to measure the distance each time to the subject and then set the lens accordingly. Here are some examples of the film shifting in and out of focus. Footage Examples And here are some stills: Frame 1 of Clip 1 A few frames later from Clip 1 Frame 1 of Clip 2 A few frames later from Clip 2. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what might cause this and if it is a pressure plate issue? I’ve also attached a videos showing the condition of the pressure plate and how the motor runs etc. Bolex Motor Running Here are is a photo of the pressure plate. I should also note that when the focal length of the zoom lens was set to 100mm it seemed as if the focus didn’t shift for whatever reason.

I am a retired museum director and restorer of things and have just acquired a Bolex S-221 projector and urgently need a service manual for it, or contact with someone who has worked on these. The motor runs, but too slowly and without much power. The carbon brushes are fine and the commutator is clean. The bearings are free and lubricated. I think there may be a starting capacitor or two associated with the motor and can see a couple of potential candidates but cannot get at them to replace them. It seems to be impossible to remove the front cover plate - the cover behind the lens mounting plate - that contains the projection lamp, reflector and condenser lens. I have removed all screws that retain it and can move it out about half an inch, but something prevents it moving any further. There is an electronic circuit board visible, and a high power resistor associated with the motor circuit, but I can't get any further without removing this cover. I have the Instruction manual, that includes the amplifier schematic, but does not include anything to do with the motor circuit. Can anyone help please? David in Canada

hello everyone, The Bolex EBM can only be powered with 12V. If my V-lock plate isn’t regulated for 12v but my cable powering the Bolex from that plate is regulated 12v, would that be okay ? Or does both need to be 12v regulated. Additionally and most importantly, any tips on rigging a bolex EBM with power + a rec and stop button ? Looking at all the options, but can't find many. Thanks !

HI Simple question (I think): I have a Bolex REX 4. I have a Sekonic L-398A light metre. I use the Cine numbers on the light metre for the reading. But I'm still unsure as to what exposure compensation I should be making from the light reading to the aperture on the camera. Half a stop open? A stop? Thanks for any guidance Jack

Hi all, I wanted to share what I've done with my Bolex EBM regarding the battery and maybe help any other people out there. I've done a lot of searching online, but I realised I would love to power it from a V lock type battery, for ease of use. I purchased a SmallRig battery plate (SmallRig Battery Adapter Plate 3204). I went for this one as it wasn't too expensive and after sending them an email, confirmed that the outputs on the plate are regulated (as the Bolex EBM requires 12V). Another benefit of this plate is that it has a power button, meaning the you don't need to get a cable with a switch to power on/off the camera. The button makes it much cleaner too. The plate was screwed on the back of the camera. This required a bit of modding and making the existing holes on the back of the camera a bit bigger (took me 3 minutes to do this). I made a custom cable, using a simple 5.5mm x 2.5mm DC barrel plug, and a Amphenol Tuchel connector (T 3475 005). Pin 3 is +12V and pin 4 is ground. This connector is really well made and fits perfectly with the camera, worth it in my opinion. Once the cable was made, I simply plugged it into the 12V output on the plate, and the camera works perfectly. Currently I'm planning on adding a small monitor and a small video assist as well, which will both be powered from the 12V outputs on the battery itself with a Dtap cable. The only drawback with this method is that you in reality need to use a video tap, as the viewfinder is blocked by the battery/plate. With a smaller plate and battery, it could have probably been avoided. So far I'm quite happy with this setup!

Hello all, I've got a dour situation on my hands with my new Bolex H16. Not sure which model exactly - it's an eBay find - but it has a variable shutter so I think it's an Rx2. It was running fine this evening as I was putting my first roll through. I wanted to try to do a double exposure and rewound the camera a few feet. Then when I re-engaged the motor I heard an unnatural noise. Suffice to say, that motor isn't running any more. I've removed the film - there didn't seem to be any jams. I've tried single frame and slow-speed continuous running but neither have engaged the motor. The crank is tight, like it has a full wind, but won't move in either direction when engaged. And the rewind works... in both directions. Does this sound like a spring problem? Any other ideas? This is my first Bolex and I might have gotten to antsy to try out its special effects...

I recently purchased a Kern Switar 10mm f1.4 lens, which appears to be in good condition, for use on my Bolex EBM with a c mount adapter. However, when mounting this lens I encountered a strange problem where it would only focus at extremely close distances and leaves the rest out of focus. Seems like this lens is not in such great shape after all but wondering if anyone knows a fix? Thanks for any help!

Hi fellow cinematographers, I'm looking for the (somewhat hard to find) 26mm Kern Switar Preset lens in the final black version with multicoated glass. I need the optics to be in a good shape but body doesn't matter that much. I desperately need to complete my lens set. I'm looking for anyone that has this lens but I'd prefer to buy from someone in Europe/EU (that would be perfect!) or the UK. But I'm open to discussing importing it from US as well. Please message me here on the forums so we can eventually discuss the sale in more detail. Thank you very much for any leads on this! Marek

Hello, I recently found my grandpa's old Bolex 480 macrozoom super 8 camera, which I want to test out to see if it works, however it seems like the battery holder was lost. I am trying to look for a spare but I am finding it really hard to find any spare battery compartments of this specific camera, so I was wondering if I could use battery compartments from similar models? Any advice on how to find a new batter compartment is greatly appreciated!

Made a reel out of all the concert footage I shot in 2023. The super 8 footage was shot on a Beaulieu 4008 ZMII and the 16mm was shot on a Bolex H16. https://youtu.be/WgHjehnVAkA?si=BnNhBzU_E0mt8ZBW
