  2. Hello everyone, I am a French documentary filmmaker and would like to develop my own practice in shooting on 16mm. I am looking for an affordable camera to shoot by myself (previously I was shooting with a team). As far as I know, these are the cameras that could be good companions: Scoopic 16 or 16M / Bolex EL / Aaton A-Minima / Ikonoskop but if you own another camera that could do the job, feel free to suggest it to. Looking forward to hearing what you have to offer! Thank you! Margaux Guillemard
  3. Hi There, I made this super cheap video assist from a camera I'd bought a little while ago but thought didn't work (not sure why). The cameras are on sale for a little less than $8. They are light enough for gaff tape to hold them on to the viewfinder (at least until you find a permanent solution) and they are good enough for framing for sure. This was on a Rex 5 with 13x viewfinder. I will try it on the 10x tomorrow. I think they have some kind of automatic gain which really does help make it brighter than the Bolex viewfinder would ever be to the naked eye. But the image is also not that great under normal household light but one wouldn't be shooting under those lighting conditions I would hope. :) You can see more photos and ready about it more here: http://www.threewestcreative.com/12-dollar-bolex-video-assist/ You can get the cameras here while they last (looks like they also have the same ones for less than $7 too if you look at their inventory) : http://www.ebay.com/itm/291002399506 I have a 1k Bambino with diffusion in front going on there so the edges of the video view can be seen. It doesn't zoom in enough to be edge to edge though. The lens is 3.5-8mm. I'm not sure how this will look once in a real world situation where you'll have the lens stopped down for the best exposure. I'm sure I'll find out soon enough. Cheers!
  4. I have for sale a rare and sought-after Bolex anamorphot 8/19/1.5x lens adaptor. Designed for the H8 cameras, they've found new fame for the superb and distinctive look they bring when used on micro 4/3rds cameras. This one is in excellent condition - a few marks on the barrel to be expected with age, but the optics are clean as a whistle. It's easily mounted to any lenses with stepup rings or readily-available custom anamorphic adaptors. Images attached below. There are plenty of reviews on the web, and some beautiful test footage from one here: https://vimeo.com/37044086. This is a fantastic, unique and cost-effective addition to any 4/3rd shooters lens set. Price is US$975. Available to view in Hobart or Melbourne, Australia but happy to send internationally with Paypal fee and shipping additional. More images are available on request - as I can't seem to attach them! Cheers, Jonathan.

  6. I'm considering buying this Bolex I found at a local camera store. I've been wanting to try 16mm for a while now, and this feels like a good opportunity to purchase. I was wondering if anyone could highlight some pros/cons with this model? I believe it is just the H16 Reflex. It sounds like it runs fine and everything seems to be working, but regardless I plan on sending it to get serviced just to make sure everything is working properly. I'm only aware of Du-All Camera (if anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know). Are there any specific limitations or things I should be cautious of? The lenses seem decent, but I think I'd like to buy some better primes later on. Thanks in advance!
  7. Hey everyone, I've had a handful of rolls developed from my Bolex H16 RX, and all have had a vertical purple line throughout each frame on the left hand side. There's a faint line on the right hand side as well, but less prominent. The line is more apparent in underexposed footage. Image attached of an underexposed clip. Anyone know what this might be? Some sort of a light leak, or is something scratching the film? Thanks in advance for any help.
  8. Hey Everyone, Im selling my Bolex H16 Reflex camera body. It has been full serviced, so no need to send it for any type of repair. 9. Anyone know of someone who converts bolex from c mount to pl in europe?
  10. I came across this teaser for a documentary by Alexandre Favre called Bolex: The Last Employee and thought the readers of this forum might appreciate it. https://vimeo.com/150185992 The contemporary footage was shot using a Bolex modified for super 16, and the audio was recorded on a Nagra. The historical footage and commentary is interesting. Particularly the bit about small camera assembly lines being staffed by women, who were presumed to be more agile than men. The level of precision and craftsmanship that went into these machines is pretty inspiring. I'm looking forward to seeing the full length documentary when it's released.

  12. Hi, I am planning on shooting a short film on my Bolex B8. It takes double run 8mm film. I want to shoot in black and white (film stock I can find for my camera includes Fomapan reversal 100, Fomapan negative 100, and Fomapan negative T200). I am relatively new to shooting on 8mm and I was wondering if anyone had any tips for me, especially in regards to the best way to light for B/W 8mm? I hope to get as sharp an image possible, I understand that shooting at a higher aperture will help, and that using newer lenses will also help (although I do not plan on purchasing new lenses). I love high contrast images but I am not sure how well I will be able to achieve this with 8mm. Is there anything in particular I should keep in mind when I am lighting? Is one of the film stocks I mentioned better to use than the others? Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
  13. Okay... Here's a conversion to 200' film loads https://www.ebay.com/itm/292940692573?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649
  14. Hey All, I'm looking for a Bolex H16 SBM in good condition. These seem to have become quite rare and are sold on ebay for ridiculous prices above the 3000$ mark. So if any of you can offer me a good deal for one, I'd be very happy. I'm located in Germany and willing to pay for shipping. Thank you!
  15. Sorry for repeating. I think this is more proper to be here. - Hello, Recently I bought the bolex H16 rex5. But I am not sure if the viewfinder is okay. From its appearance it is 10x viewfinder. Hope I can get some advices from seniors here. First of all it has lever on the side but I can see the image very well when it is vertical position! And the horizontal position, it become very dark. But still I can see the image and specially bottom 30% parts become really dark. When I remove the lens and rotate turret, from the front side I can recognize lights through the prism glass. The light comes from viewfinder behind(usually where my eye should place there), so I can imagine the film will be damaged if I put the lever vertical position. When I change the lever horizontal position, I can sense from the front side the light is blocked somehow. Actually still I can see the dark image through the viewfinder. Also what I found strange is, when I turn the lever horizontal position I have to rotate lever forward direction(lens side, not to the eye side). I checked all bolex images, it seems completely opposite from other cameras or manual pictures. Here the summaries and my questions, 1. Is it possible the viewfinder lever works the other way around that horizontal position is closed but vertical position is openning the view? 2. Even if it is possible, but is it still normal that I can see the darken images through the closed viewfinder?(horizontal) 3. If the viewfinder has a problem, can I use the side-attachable viewfinder instead of this?(if so, I might block original viewfinder to avoid fogging damages) Thanks for reading, Best,yj

  21. Dear friends, I am sorry to part with this camera - but it is necessary! This tool Kingsman. The kit includes a body, an objective (it is capable of 5-), and a motor with 25 FPS The camera needs love, care and work. I checked the motor - it works, but I did not do any footage from this camera. but I do not think that something is wrong with her. I want for her $ 1200, but without a cassette and a bottom handle. Although this is also debatable. http://dom2.tw/ http://dom2.tw/ http://dom2.tw/
  22. Hello everyone, I will be filming a shortfilm with my H16 EL in a couple of weeks. I am planning to light one interior scene with an HMI 1,2KW and some practical lights. I live in Europe so light is 50Hz. Given that shutter angle is 170º, is there any way to avoid lights from flicker at 24fps or 25fps? (24x360)/170=50,82 If my maths are correct, 24fps would give the closest shutter speed to 1/50. Best, Marcos
  23. Hello, It seems I can't attach my 400ft mag bolex motor to the mag. Position is correct (with the motor cable pointing to the mag) but even pressing strongly the motor remains unlocked and I am not able to turn clockwise. Are there two versions of motors or some part is missing from mine? I attach pictures of both. Marcos
  24. I’ve created a hybrid… combining 8mm and 16mm parts. I recently discover the joys of the reflex viewer up stream from the lens iris. This allows the image to stay bright, not affected by the iris. So, I took converted super16 and machined out an 8mm film block. The lens’s frame mask was converted to super16 aspect ratio. It all seems to line up… anybody see any potential problems???
