Hey Filmmakers! This summer i'm officially doing my first job as a paid DoP for a short film (30min approximately) . I've never shot fiction before, i am foremost a Director and Writer for my own films. Although i have studied still photography for a long time, i've only shot and directed my own documentary short film. The film is mostly taking place in one location, a forest with a cabin/small house. I want to create a very unique look for the film, i'm gonna play with mist/rain, shoot early mornings and evenings. I take a lot of inspiration from my favorite filmmakers like Andrei Tarkovsky, Theo Angelopoulos and Yasujiro Ozu. I'm worried that my technical knowledge will set me back during filming, i'm probably gonna have to rely on my camera operator if that ever happens. We're a pretty small team of great guys and girl, so i'm in no worry that we're gonna be in a disagreement in anyway. What are the things that i should avoid? The lightning equipment is not much but i want to achieve a soft looking light in a lot of scenes, i will also list those below with the gear. All tips/comments are welcomed! The camera has 1426 hours mainly from studio broadcast use. Includes four 128GB SanDisk CFast 2.0 cards ($1200 value). This package purchased new would cost $11,200. I have a problem: I love handheld footage, not shaky cam, but just a shot that would normally be on a dolly or a tripod being held, the slight movement with shadowy hard lighting is my favorite style. That isn't my problem, my problem is the camera I have: a Black Magic Design Cinema Camera. Now, the picture is fantastic, the RAW and ProRes are fantastic, and having to rig the hell out of it for full effect is perfectly fine with me. And I can deal with the crop factor by working with focal lengths from 18-35. My problem that I can't deal with is the rolling shutter. When I do a whip pan or run with the camera, It becomes very apparent. I don't want to just fix it in adobe every time, and as to my knowledge there are no speedboosters that can put a different mount onto an EF mount due to sensor size issues, so my question is, what can I get or due to fix the rolling shutter? Faster lens? Wider focal length? Heavier rig? A speedbooster I'm not aware of? And if not, what should I get to replace it, specifically with handheld in mind? Sorry if I made any eyes roll, I'm a rookie here.
