  1. Hello! I've just started putting together a youtube channel with little behind the scenes videos, tutorials and advice for the aspiring, young, or otherwise "new" cinematographer. I've had many colleagues and students express frustration at the daunting task of "learning how to light". While complex in many regards, it also merely requires you to begin by putting one foot in front of the other... Take a look and let me know if you find this video helpful! Laura Beth Love, Cinematographer www.lblove.com
  2. Hello, There is a pretty considerable price difference between the Angeniuex optimo lens and the DP. Aside from the limitations of the Dp with film cameras, is there a substantial difference in image quality and lens speed between the two? I shoot red one MX.. I understand the housing on the dp is a little "cheapy" but for how much more I will have to pay for an optimo, is the image going to be that much more superior and in what ways? Thanks for the input! Tim

  5. I've been working with an underwater photographer on developing a spec idea. It would be about creating the Cover Catalog photos and promotional video for a fictional clothing line, RENQVIST. Much of the original prep work can be seen in my evernote. https://www.evernote.com/shard/s195/sh/f0166ea2-7f53-4f3f-95e2-3237f2effdcb/abc02fd462d7d4814e324e62b9f53e70 I've even created a rough sketch of the concept by recutting a great video I saw on vimeo. https://vimeo.com/76786516 Password: renqvist Having taken the project this far, I realize I very much need the help of a seasoned Underwater DP, to figure out the lighting and shooting requirements. NOW I'm stuck. Where are people like this? I've done some unsatisfactory searching and thought to ask the community here. How do start sourcing a DP for spec work, if I don't have many connections? Especially, when I want to do something as specialized as shooting underwater. Any help/constructive advice/constructively telling me I'm insane is appreciated.
  6. Hello everyone, I am new to the forum and was hoping that someone on here would be able to assist me in my quest to apply for Panavision's College Internship Program. I have tried contacting Stephanie Lyons at their Hollywood location, however, my attempts have be fruitless. I am currently a Senior at the University of California Irvine and want to learn about their cameras, as well as 35mm film cameras as a whole, preferably from the grunt-work up. I would like to have an old fashioned mentorship-styled environment where a master of the craft can show me the ropes cleaning and lugging around different pieces of equipment, however, I'm not sure how realistic my hopes are. If you have any information about the program or know anyone who does, I will be eternally grateful.
  7. I'm currently studying film at NYU with a concentration in cinematography. I am very serious and passionate about it but I'm just not sure how I go down the path. My end goal would be to be a feature and commercial DP and I understand that it will take time and I am ready to work my way up but how do I get there? Right now I'm just shooting/gaffing/AC projects for others at Tisch and looking for freelance jobs and fashion films. Should I be working to join the Local 600 union? If so, as what? 1st AC? Does anyone have tips on getting more jobs? Finally, does anyone have any advice as to what equipment I should get. Currently, I have a DSLR with lenses, a shoulder rig, follow focus, and an 8" monitor. Thanks a lot for your answers
  8. Hi, Im looking to invest roughly $1200 on a grading monitor. Could someone with good knowledge with monitors put me on the right direction? I'm thinking a second hand 2009 hp dreamcolor which has been really popular in the past or a new eizo sx2462W. What would people recommend? Thanks
  9. Hello! Here is my long overdue new reel as a cinematographer, "junior" DIT and colorist. 11. Hi, I'm looking for southern California based DP's for ongoing commercial work. If you can send a link to your portfolio of work and typical day rate, that would be great. No phone calls please. Kind regards, Reid
  12. Hi everyone! I'm a newbie here and am looking to get a bit of feedback and expand my network. Recently out of SVA's Social Documentary Film program (2011), I'm a documentary filmmaker based in NY. In the past few years, I've been working freelance as an associate producer, DP, and editor while I finish up my first documentary film, Kasmayaki. My background is in photography, and I made the transition to video a few years back when I became decided to use my image-making skills to work on environmental projects. Since then, I've done photo and video work for groups like the Environmental Defense Fund, Al Gore's Climate Reality Project and the National Fish & Wildlife. A few months ago, I traveled to Nigeria to shoot a documentary called Street Girls. I really enjoy working as a DP with a director. I recently cut a cinematography reel and would love your expert feedback! Since I've only worked on tiny budget productions, I'm looking to expand my experience in shooting larger budget films. I'm interested in developing myself as a DP and am looking for opportunities where I can work on set as camera assistant. I'm professional, hardworking and committed to my craft - if there's anyone looking for an assistant, please get in touch! Or feel free just to say hello. :) Looking forward to exploring this site and learning more from the forums, which I can already see are packed with useful information! Best regards, Yuki Kokubo

  16. This was a spot I did for NY Fashion Week during the Sept 2012 season. It's essentially a highlight consisting of a number of runway shows and BTS points from various shows all over the city. I had a ton of fun with this spot, as it paved the way for me to jump into fashion filmmaking alongside other bodies of work. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGiBAMtE8uk Additionally, this was another fashion spot for a small urban clothing line. Sort of chimes in on the previous work a bit... ESEF NY Fall Delivery 2012: https://vimeo.com/47217443
  17. So I've been posting quite a bit here and just wanted to share some of my work. This was a series of promos set up for a Madison Square Garden combat sport based event called "Muay Thai At The Mecca II". I was brought on as the DP/Director of a second time and produced several spots for the promotion this previous November. I'd love to hear you guys feedback on everything :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLKrQGncq0g http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtO_4CfTX9o
