  1. Have loved the Panasonic G6, such a big upgrade from the original Panasonic GH1 which I started this filmmaking journey with (although technically it was my girlfriend's Nikon D90 or my sister's Canon T2i that I borrowed for the first handful of shoots), but in recent years I've been considering an upgrade. First to the Panasonic G7, simply to get 4K, but as the price of the Panasonic G85 kept on coming down on eBay that tempted me instead for the better low light, the live HDMI out, and of course the IBIS! But this is a slippery slope, because as I wait... then the Panasonic G9 got that big 1
  2. Hey, I have 2 travel films here, one from Vietnam and another from Sicily. Whenever visiting foreign places I like to shoot as much as I can to practise framing etc. I like to go for this documentary style while still trying to be artistic. I am also a freelance illustrator so that's where that's coming from Basically, not 'real' cinematography practise which would include lighting, blocking etc. but more about finding composition/moods and then editing Hope you like, they are both short Vietnam: Sicily:
  3. I’ve got something I’ve been wondering for over and over this past weekend! I read that downscailing from 4K to HD can produce the equivalent of 10-bit luma. Like to say: 8bits 4K = 10bits HD. Is that in fact true? how is it possible? the GH4 records externally 10bits 4:2:2, the Sony A7 II with an external recorder only 8bit 4:2:0, so I wonder I shoot with the Atomos Shogun (not real 4K but UHD I think) and then I downscale it to to I get a true 10bits 4:2:2, with S-Log3, nicer to grade with, that would work cos of 8bits 4K=10bits HD? or it doesn't work this way?
  4. dear fellow(more experienced) cinematographers if you had the choice between buying the fs7 or fs5 with the Atmos for external 4k what would be your choice(price would be about the same at least here in Switzerland) I mean for just hd the fs5 is perfect when it comes to size(I own a ronin and a drone) and the picture is stunning but 4k is not acceptable. Fs7 is the whole package fot its price range. What would you recommend for someone that wants to be able to deliver very good 4k but also has to consider size and shoots a lot of project in HD? fs5 with Atmos, Fs7 with GH4 or... Th
  5. We recently finished the filming of my first feature "Mind Cage", and it was filmed in Cambodia. We used GH4 and Phantom 3 for the drone shot. We are currently in post-production. Please check out the teaser and the journey of the film so far. http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/mind-cage/ Any support/feedback or comments will be helpful. Thanks a lot.
  6. Episode 9 of the Indie Film Academy Podcast, I'm talking with Caleb Pike about the best cameras available for indie filmmakers. http://www.indiefilmacademy.com/ifa-9-caleb-pike-dslr-video-shooter/
  7. I'm thinking about buying a camera at the end of the year. I've been assessing what I can afford and what's available. So far, I've narrowed it down to either the Panasonic GH4 or the Sony A7s. I like the GH4's native ability to shoot 4k but I'm concerned about the 4/3" sensor size. I'm impressed with the Sony A7s' shooting capability especially in low light but disappointed that shooting 4k requires an expensive peripheral. I'd appreciate any advice, opinions and first hand intel anyone can give me. If there's another camera system that anyone would recommend, by all means. Mind you I can
  8. Hey Guys, I'm currently working for a production company that is looking to upgrade camera systems. We really want to take our visual quality to the next level here. Right now- depending on the client- we utilize either FS100's for run-n-gun type work, in addition to GH4s for more corporate 4k stuff. Can anyone recommend a suitable upgrade to what we have? Let's say our budget (we are looking for an upgraded pair) is anywhere from $2-8,000 per camera. It would be great if you could provide a gradient of options! Right now, our main prospect is the Sony A7s II. Thanks! Sam
  9. I have been researching and speaking with Engineers for days about how to build a lighting rig that does not band 96 or 120 frames per second. The GH4, for example, is a camera that requires more light than usual, so I have to have at least 500W power to provide efficient light. Where are these powerful high CRI halogens? I am searching for the bulb specifically. I can build a ballast with a capacitor to offset the peaks in order to avoid banding.
