  2. Hello all, Here's a question that I would like to know the answer to: I'm preparing to shoot a short film, which will be entered into various film festivals, and there is a scene in the movie in which the protagonist is watching an old Western film (haven't decided on which one yet, but most likely The Wild Bunch (1969)). The movie will mostly be shown in the background, though for a few seconds I plan on shifting focus to show some of the violence from the clip. Now, my question is, would there be any copyright/legal issues with this? I plan on giving full credit to the studios in the final credits. Thanks, John W. King
  3. In the new year I am looking to shoot a short film. I heard that I should probably get insurance (Gear/liability). I did a little research online and found a company called Film Emporium. Has anyone used them? Their website is http://www.filmemporium.com. Thanks!
  4. Hi, I'm making a short film next year, and one of the scenes features two people walking the streets of a city, much like this ( see video below ) i was wondering if anyone could tell me what is the best way to light the actors to get that city night feel? or do i need any other lights at all, will the ambient light of the city do? keeping in mind my rig will consist of a glide cam, and a Canon c100 mk 2. so not much room for big lighting rigs moving with the camera, also its quite low budget film. any thoughts? Thanks Gabe
  5. Hello Guys Please do check out the trailer for my shortfilm "5PM" and review it, then tell me wat you think I could have done better Here's the link

  7. Hey guys! I'm new here but glad I found this forum. My new to filmmaking in general but have always had a passion for film especially in the realm of horror. Just recently, I took a risk and just did my first short horror film. I recently completed a little 2 minute short for a contest with Chiller TV. I didn't win...but I got out of my comfort zone and took a risk. I LOVED IT, though I told myself I should just give up and quit. I realized after feedback from multiple people, my story for this short was very weak. Hard to follow. Putting myself out there with all my mistakes but wanted to share it with you guys and get your thoughts in it. This was shot with a Canon 1100d and edited with Final Cut Pro: https://vimeo.com/95459742 -Brandon
  8. Hello, there! I'm a 16 year old director, and have just gotten into cinematography. I'm beginning to develop a style of moving the camera during intense scenes, and framing wide shots by focusing mostly on the background. Please take a look at my latest short film, "The Lake", where I use these principles to heighten the suspense and tell the story. John W. King
  9. Hi there, I am with a young film maker team from Germany and I would really like to know what you think of our work: Escaped! (original title: Getuermt) is an independent short film by O. Weisskopf and M. Kleinfeld about two prison escapees on the run. It's German with English subs. Best regards Dustin
  10. Hello, folks! I'm a young director (mid-teens), and the selection of actors in my town are mostly well-trained theatre actors. Earlier this summer, I made a film with two of these actors + a young film actor, and I noticed some difference in the two groups. The theatre guys were a lot more patient than film actor, but never really took direction; they were great improvisers (which is okay, but it left my film actor in a very awkward position as he was more for taking serious direction). Now I have read on directors such as Elia Kazan, who have worked in both theatre and film successfully, but I am still open to advice from you guys: what are some ways a director could work with a stage actor to create a great performance? By the way, the films I make are mostly dramas/crime films, which I like to call "Southerns" (I take a lot of inspiration from films such as No Country for Old Men, and Badlands). I recently volunteered at my local theatre department as a technician/stage manager for the fall, but nevertheless, I would like to hear what you guys think. Sincerely,
  11. I shot my first short film "A Fistful of Feathers" with Director of Photography, Tom Hanmer, back in December and finished up post in May. Tom used his beautifully sharp Leica Zooms and his newly acquired motion mount. Amazing way to shoot. Wicked fast adjustments. .1 ND increments all day long. A great way to work on a tight schedule.
  12. Hi Everybody at the www.cinematography Forum, Thank you for everybody's wise words and great advice, I have come on a great amount since I have started following this forum. I have just finished a short film (about 35 minutes in duration) for my 3rd, and Final, year in University. I am studying 'Film & Television Production' in the UK and would love any creative/constructive criticism that people have so that I can improve/gain some skills. This is my first short film I have shot & lit myself although I have worked on other capacity's on some very small independent films. Here is a trailer that our group have produced, i'm looking for advice to do with camerawork/lighting rather than trailer editing (as I only had partial input on this). Obviously it goes without saying we don't have copyright for the songs used but this is okay for our module: This was shot on a 5D mk II (as is commonplace for student films). Many, many thanks for the time taken to watch the trailer and provide feedback. All the Best, Jonny Treherne
  13. Hello, I just completed working on a short film.. extremely small crew, sometimes I was the only crew member. :) Regardless of that, I'd love some constructive feed back on my Cinematography. Pointers on what to think about, good visual analyzation and thoughts. Let me just say I appreciate all of the professionals on this site helping others to grow and learn. Sincerely, Davi

  20. I know this is kind of basic but does anyone have some ideas on showing time passing in a sort film. In the scene my character would sit down and start doing something until hours later her is interrupted. How do I show the time passing without going to a different scene. thanks
  21. Hello there, I launched a new short film over the web a few days ago. We have been chosen as official selections at a few festivals and have won Best Cinematography at the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, as part of the Quebec short films. I'd love to get some feedback from anyone watching the film. Any comments, suggestions, thoughts, etc. Whatever anyone wants to share, I'd be delighted to hear it. Thanks and hope you enjoy :) Here it is. KIN.
  22. Currently making my first short film and I'm not very experienced in editing. Any suggestions on what to use for editing?

  24. Hi, I'm currently planning a short that I am DP'ing by the end of the summer. As you might have expected, we are kind of on a limited budged, but we have enough to rent the equipment needed. I am planning to shoot on my own 7d. The director wants the entire short, which by the way is one scene only (about 3-4 minutes), to take place by the ocean, and it is raining throughout the entire scene. We went location scouting last week, and found the location we want. It is, however, not very close to any population. My plan is to bring a power supplier, so that I may not worry about batteries for all the equipment, our tiny video village, etc. (the sound guys will probably hate me, though). Anyway, the director has asked me to find a way to create the rain. I was thinking that since we're shooting right by the ocean, why not use that unlimited amount of water to do it? All I would need is some solution as to how I can bring the water up in the air. Something like the stuff the fire departments use to get water up from the fire plugs, or something like that. Now, for that part I have little experience. Any ideas or experiences that could help me? Thanks a lot!
