    Hello all, My name is Robert, currently heading into my graduate thesis film production, with a question about shooting two different cameras over one production. During prep with the director, the idea of shooting 2 cameras came up as I was camera testing with a Canon c700 and the Canon Cine Primes, which I have decided to use as an A camera. As it stands, our budget won't allow for a second c700 to act as B camera, however we currently have an f55 w/ Ultra Primes reserved from the school's equipment house. Having tested both cameras, I know that each camera possesses different characteristics and will not match right off the bat. That being said, does having a two-camera setup where the cameras are inherently different make sense given the differences in specs (color space, dynamic range, codex etc.)? Is it feasible given that it can be adjusted in the DI, and would it be possible to get the cameras close during production. Because of the different characteristics and looks, I have toyed with the idea of using each camera situationally based on their given strengths, but in some cases I would need to have a B camera available to support the A camera. I realize that I may be giving myself more work in the long run, and I'm sure there are things I am missing, but I would greatly appreciate any idea, advice and expertise on the topic.     Looking for some exposure help when shooting moody scenes with the FS5 - I have seen a lot of people recommending setting the zebra to 70 percent ( which makes things pretty bright on the monitor for a darker scene/ is this something people only do in LOG? ) are there any other usable on camera exposure tool other than zebra?. Don't use Sony's much and am more used to Using a REC 709 LUT or false colors within my ALEXA eyepiece to expose. Also, should I be switching from LOG3 to cine gamma for lower light situations? Also any general tips for exposing low light scenes without crushing the blacks?

Especially what circle of confusion is what what it does and why. Ive had people try and explain it but I can't grasp it it all sounds foreign to me when random numbers are involved. Many thanks.     Hi there, I'm asking myself some questions about compression in the sony a7s II's various recording formats and maybe some of you know the answer. I tried to calculate the mean (file) size of a pixel in the different formats to compare the amount of compression: 4k 30p 100Mbps : 3.33 Mb per image = 0.40 bit per pixel (on average, obviously) 24p 100Mbps : 4.17 Mb per image = 0.50 bit per pixel HD 24p 50Mbps : 2.08 Mb per image = 1.00 bit per pixel 30p 50Mbps : 1.67 Mb per image = 0.80 bit per pixel 60p 50Mbps : 0.83 Mb per image = 0.40 bit per pixel 120p 100Mbps : 0.83 Mb per image = 0.40 bit per pixel Is 4K 24p actually 80Mbps to have the same image quality as 4K 30p, or is it true 100Mbps an thus produce a less compressed image ? Same question for 24 and 30p 50Mbps HD. If 24p 50Mbps HD is actually 50Mbps, it means it's the format with the least compression with over 1bit per pixel on average. If the limiting factor of the camera is a data stream of 100Mbps max, why are there no HD 24/30/60p 100Mbps modes for better IQ ? Is it to keep consistency over compression levels across the various framerates even if it means sub optimal IQ ? But then the 4K 24p should be 80Mbps to fit the 30p compression ? 100Mps for all the different res/framerate combinations would allow the 60p to be better quality than the 120p, as it should, and also allow an even lower compression 24p mode (with over 2 bits per pixel) This would come in handy for specific shots where you'd want low compression over high resolution.     Hi All, I'm currently DOP for a social realism graduation film, a bit naive and a bit nervous because my approach is to experiment and shoot with the Sony F55 and 16mm Zeiss Distagon prime lenses throughout the whole of the short film. This means I have to operate with 2x crop, which isn't much of an issue because I have all the necessary primes and zoom lens to cover the shots needed, but from the camera test footage the lenses appear a bit too soft. I was intending to get a soft look, but I didn't realise how soft they would actually be. I'm not too sure if the lenses need calibrating in anyway, but I won't jump to conclusions because my knowledge doesn't go that far, however they do seem to perform slightly better in low light. My film is being filmed out on the majority of Day Exteriors, so I'm just wondering if it's worth sticking to my guns, or whether it might be best to resort to other lenses. I also have the option of using the Zeiss CP.2 prime lenses, and I'm now thinking this could be my best choice. I'm a fan of the work by Stuart Bentley on This is England 90' and I've read up and come to understand that he operated with the Arri Amira, Arri Alura zoom lenses and the vintage Canon K35 primes. I'm just wondering if anyone has any useful advice on how I could achieve a similar look to this work.     Hey guys, If you’re reading this ad, you might be familiar with the F35’s recent resurgence thanks to the wonders of modern external recorders. The sensor is just gorgeous, a 5k CCD with a global shutter (so you never need to worry about rolling shutter skew again), beautiful colour science, and highlight handling that’s still only topped by the Arri Alexa. I generally rate the camera at 400 ISO, but am happy with it up to 800 ISO (which is basically equivalent to the Red Dragon with the Skintone/Highlight OLPF). I recently returned from shooting a Bollywood feature with it over in India, starring Eric Roberts. And I’ve shot a documentary, four short films and a couple of commercials with it as well, and it’s been absolutely rock solid for me. I’d shot with the F35 in its original incarnation, and felt there were a couple of key areas I wanted to address when I assembled my own kit - and that was largely to do with the monitoring. The original Sony C30 EVF that came with the camera was only standard definition, and it made being certain of critical focus with the camera pretty difficult, it also only gave you zebras for exposure monitoring, which again, was pretty limiting. So my solution was to pair the camera with the new Zacuto Gratical Eye, and the Odyssey7Q+. This gave me HD monitoring with both the EVF and the monitor/recorder, with full, customisable LUT support across both (something most of the current top cameras out there still won’t do), and waveforms, (accurate) peaking, and false colour (to name just a few of the features). I’ve installed matching LUTs on both the Gratical and the Odyssey, and calibrated both to match (so you’ll see a matching image regardless of which you’re looking at). The reason I consider this the ‘Ultimate’ F35 kit, is because I’ve designed every part of the kit with the Operator (namely myself) in mind, and as a result it’s really easy to work with. The build is extremely streamlined, with a 15mm rod system allowing for rigid and precise placement of both the EVF and the monitor. The Zacuto Axis Mini slots straight into the Wooden Camera Top Handle, and allows for perfect placement of the EVF for handheld work as well as being on the dolly or sticks. And because the Top Handle is mounted to Nato Rail, both the handle and EVF can be slid off the camera in mere seconds for packing down into a compact carry case, or squeezing into tight spaces. Every component just works really well together. To simplify things further I also had Panavision build a custom v-mount plate for the camera, to provide two addition DTAP ports to run the Gratical Eye and the Odyssey - which means there’s no stuffing around with DTAP splitters or additional battery/power-distro gack. Using the Odyssey7Q+ allows you to get the most out of the sensor possible, using dual-link recording from the camera’s Interface Box, you get an uncompressed 12-bit 4:4:4 1080p feed (downsampled from the 5k sensor), that you can record in uncompressed 12-bit .DPX files (for insane image quality), or 12-bit ProRes4444 or ProRes4444XQ (for simple, very high quality drag-and-drop files). Or for shoots that don’t require crazy image quality you can also record in simple ProRes422 or 422HQ. You can also record at up to 50fps for beautiful 2x slow-motion. And with two 512GB Samsung 850 Pro SSDs, you’ve got enough recording space to comfortably shoot for a full day. The camera only has 1230 hours on it, so it’s about as pristine an example as you’re going to find. Additional kit includes a Portabrace Rain Cover/Sunshade for the Odyssey7Q (which is great for viewing the monitor outdoors), and an Element Technica Hybrid Studio Baseplate and Dovetail, along with 19mm stainless steel rods - so you can put the camera straight on your tripod, add a battery, add a lens and start shooting immediately. There’s nothing left to add with this kit, as I’ve already put in the hard yards to design and piece it together. and the nice part about the kit, is that because all of the accessories are non-proprietary, they'll translate over seamlessly to your next camera too.
