  1. Hello everybody ! I wrote a table comparing most of our favorite cameras and their technical specifications (Sensor info, recording info, weight, Mount, Power Consumption, Price ...). I was bored searching in the manuals and documentations, so this should make it a bit easier ! DIGITAL CAMERA COMPARISON Next time, I'd like to make it dynamic with an auto ranking when we click on a particular category. Cheers, Romain
  2. I purchased the sony fs700. it is a great super slow motion camera. I've been waiting for the 6.4 update from Atomos. They said it will support sony raw. however i'm not sure if it is going to support the super slow motion or not. Sony FS700 shoot up to 240fs @2k. please share your thought and opinions.
  3. dear fellow(more experienced) cinematographers if you had the choice between buying the fs7 or fs5 with the Atmos for external 4k what would be your choice(price would be about the same at least here in Switzerland) I mean for just hd the fs5 is perfect when it comes to size(I own a ronin and a drone) and the picture is stunning but 4k is not acceptable. Fs7 is the whole package fot its price range. What would you recommend for someone that wants to be able to deliver very good 4k but also has to consider size and shoots a lot of project in HD? fs5 with Atmos, Fs7 with GH4 or... Thanks for your input Dan
  4. Hey! First post over here on the non lighting side... So I am looking into purchasing a new kit for myself-I do a lot of Independent Music Videos, Travel Docs....etc. Currently I have several GoPro's in my package, with a Canon 7d-the 7d I am pretty sick of at this point. I would like to upgrade to a Sony a7s ..or the a7sii, maybe even the r if I can get a good argument. I do a lot of lowlight with the Travel stuff so I need something pretty versatile. I've heard the rolling shutter is terrible though. I came across the Aja Cion; and I've never really heard of this camera but a few tests seemed alright outside of it's lack of dynamic range. I was just wondering on some opinions for these! If anyones used them in a Travel Scenario; or just any recommendations and facts I may have missed would be helpful. I just want to get the most bang for my buck-but also make some quality video (also any lens rec's would be awesome..i know the E Mount is a pain). Thanks!
  5. A great 1080p cinema camera with PL lens mount and lots of great features. Listed on Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/222065320662 Starting bid: $1,300 Buy Now: $1,800 I've shot numerous broadcast television commercials with this camera that aired both internationally and nationally, as well as theatrically. I've posted some images from a few shoots that had no additional lighting so you can see the quality. It has truly been a asset for my career and hope it can be a good asset for whatever needs you may have. The reason I'm listing it at a fairly low price is it has been very well used and shows plenty of signs of wear. The image is still great and I most recently used it last month as a second camera on a fashion web series for Target. My main purpose for selling it is I don't use it much anymore (Have a Sony PMW-F5 now). Included: Sony PMW-F3 Camera 2 Sony Batteries (BP-U60 & BP-U30) 1 Battery Charger 1 32 Gb SxS Memory Card. S-log firmware upgrade (already installed w/ original cost $900) 1 Stereo mic (came with the camera) 1 Microphone mount Camera Specs: With PL Mount Adapter 35mm Cine Lens Compatibility 1920 x 1080 HD, Native 23.98p & 24PsF MPEG-2 Long GOP 1080/720, Interlace/Progressive Modes S-Log Gamma/LUT Workflow 12.5-Stop Dynamic Range Dual-Link RGB 4:4:4 HD-SDI Output Genlock, Timecode (2) SxS Memory Card Slots

  7. Hello, First time poster here, came across these lenses and starting to see some positive reviews online. Just found out how much the price has dropped. Anyone have experience with these? Thoughts? We are looking to up our lens game from stills lenses (ZE). They wont be rented so having a name (Zeiss, Cooke etc) doesn't factor into our thoughts from a rental income perspective. But we would love some mechanically uniform lenses which we can easily pull focus with! http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/906631-REG/sony_scl_pk6_f_cinealta_4k_six_lens.html
  8. I'm thinking about buying a camera at the end of the year. I've been assessing what I can afford and what's available. So far, I've narrowed it down to either the Panasonic GH4 or the Sony A7s. I like the GH4's native ability to shoot 4k but I'm concerned about the 4/3" sensor size. I'm impressed with the Sony A7s' shooting capability especially in low light but disappointed that shooting 4k requires an expensive peripheral. I'd appreciate any advice, opinions and first hand intel anyone can give me. If there's another camera system that anyone would recommend, by all means. Mind you I cannot afford anything that's over $5000. Thanks.

  10. Digital cameras can do some amazing things nowadays considering where they were just even five years ago. One thing I sometimes struggle to understand is how these newer cameras with 13+ stops of dynamic range are actually quantizing that information in the camera body. One thing we know from linear A-to-D quantization is that your dynamic range is a function of the number of bits of the converter chip. A 14-bit ADC can store, at best (and ignoring noise for the moment), 14 stops of dynamic range. However, when we do introduce noise into the mix (sensor, transfer charge, ADC, etc.) and linearity errors, there really isn't 14 meaningful stops of dynamic range. I did a lot of research on pipeline ADCs (which I believe are the correct type used) and the best one I could find, as defined by the measured ENOB (effective number of bits), was the 16-bit ADS5560 ADC from Texas Instruments; it measured an impressive 13.5 bits. If most modern cameras, Alexa especially, are using 14-bit ADCs, how are they deriving 14 stops of dynamic range? I read that the Alexa has some dual gain architecture, but how do you simultaneously apply different gain settings to an incoming voltage without distorting the signal? A pretty good read through regarding this technology can be found at this Andor Technology Learning Academy article. Call me a little skeptical if you will. Not to pick on RED, but for the longest time, they advertised the Mysterium-X sensor as having 13.5 stops (by their own testing). Of course, many of the first sensors were used in RED One bodies, which only have 12-bit ADCs. Given that fact, how were they measuring 13.5 in the real world? Now, with respect to linear to log coding, some cameras are opting for this type of conversion before storing the data on memory cards; the Alexa and cameras that use Cineform RAW come to mind. If logarithmic coding is understood to mean that each stop gets an equal number of values, aren't the camera processors (FPGA/ASIC) merely interpolating data like crazy in the low end? Let's compare one 14-stop camera that stores data linearly and one that stores data logarithmically: In a 14-bit ADC camera, the brightest stop is represented by 8192 code values (16383-8192), the next brighest is represented by 4096 code values (8191-4096), and so on and so forth. The darkest stop (-13 below) is only represented by 2 values (1 or 0). That's not a lot of information to work with. Meanwhile, on our other camera, 14-stops would each get ~73 code values (2^10 = 1024 then divided equally by 14) if we assume there is a 14-bit to 10-bit linear-to-log transform. As you can see here, the brighter stops are more efficiently coded because we don't need ~8000 values to see a difference, but the low end gets an excess of code values when there weren't very many to begin with. So I guess my question is, is it better to do straight linear A-to-D coding off the sensor and do logarithmic operations at a later time or is it better to do logarithmic conversion in camera to save bandwidth when recording to memory cards? Panavision's solution, Panalog, can show the relationship between linear light values and logarithmic values after conversion in this graph: On a slightly related note, why do digital camera ADCs have a linear response in the first place? Why can't someone engineer one with a logarithmic response to light like film? The closest thing I've read about is the hybrid LINLOG Technology at Photon Focus which seems like a rather hackneyed approach. If any engineers want to hop in here, I'd be much obliged--or if your name is Alan Lasky, Phil Rhodes, or John Sprung; that is, anyone with a history of technical knowledge on display here. Thanks.

  12. Hello Guys, I am gonna start shooting a documentary next week and our main camera will be the PXW-FS7. I already check many topics, tests and other reviews. I first decided to shoot in 1920 X 1080 in S-LOG 3 / Gamut 3. Two reasons to that, first one being mobility and also wish to keep an good latitude for the grading at the director looking to a specific style. Here an example of the kind of footage we looking to end up with For some of the interview we will have a second camera which will be a Sony A7S. The Director already order a Shogun to go with it. As the A7S is capable of shooting in S-Log 2, I wonder: is the Shogun still relevant? And if I have to keep it, should I still set the camera in the Log mode? My worries are that the Shogun record only the under-expose, milky footage from the S-log but without the possibilities of grading which are suppose to come along with it. Then it is possible some day we will have to shoot with C100 but that will become an other problem. Thanks in advance for your answers All the best

  15. Hello everyone, We are conducting a study on ILCs (Interchangeable Lens Cameras) In New York and are looking for people to participate. Currently we need some cinematographers who use DSLR and/or CSC cameras. We especially need CSC users. If you have friends that could also participate please share this information. It will be a 2 hour Focus Group Discussion and if you take part we will compensate your time by $150. A focus group discussion is where we invite a group of people to talk about their experiences with a certain product, in this case ILCs. We would like to speak to you to find out how we can improve upon our products. However, there are a few criteria that you must meet to take part: • Owner and user of an ILC DSLR or CSC; • Aged between 25-50; • Must own at least 2 lenses for main system (excluding bundle/kit lenses); • Must have purchased a lens within the last 2 years. If you meet the above criteria, it is very likely that you will qualify for our study. If interested, please fill out our pre-survey in the link below. If you qualify, we will reach out to you with an invitation to take part in our focus group.https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZP89GMW Many thanks in advance.
  16. I just purchased a brand new Sony A7s (body only). There were not much lenses out there for the sony A7s, so i looked around on the internet and found a great deal for a Samyang Cine Lens Kit. The only problem is that the lenses are Nikon F Mount. What's the best lens adaptor for Sony to Nikon F Mount? Preferably, i don't want any vignette, also minimal reflection. Auto focus is not a big issue because most of my work will be film based anyway. Thank You for Reading
  17. Hi all, wondering if anyone can tell me how to tell if a Sony PMW-F3 tat I'm inn the verge of buying has the RGB 4.4.4 S-Log upgrade installed on it ? I can't see the camera, but the technicians where it is based have told me the following they got from going through the menus. 1. They accessed the VIDEO SET Icon from the Camera Menu. VIDEO SET options were then listed on the LCD menu screen 2. They scrolled to the option " SDI/HDMI/iLink I/O Select " and selected that option and from the secondary menu selected HD-SDI. 3. They then scrolled down further in the VIDEO SET options and selected the " Dual-Link & Gamma Select " option 4. From the secondary menu, they scrolled down, to see if there was an option to select, and activate, the " 3G RGB444 & S-Log option ". Apparently there was, ( please see attached photo ), and when selected, the camera rebooted ( sort of ). However, they also looked in the " Others " menu, where it said ' RGB ', but this wasn't something you could select in that menu. Can someone please confirm for me asap, whether what they have gleaned from the VIDEO SET menu means that this does have the 4.4.4 S-Log upgrade installed on it ? as I need to pay for it today if I want it. Many thanks
  18. I am selling my mint condition Optitek ProLock Mark II. I used it about a dozen times on a F5 with various Canon EF lenses. This is a great option for using more the affordable Canon DSLR lenses on the F3/F5/F55. The KEY feature of the Mark II is that it is powered by the mount so so power cable is required. New was $1800, asking $1400. Make an offer! Pictures emailed upon request The Prolock EF has electrical contacts to allow powered control over the iris in 1/3 stop increments via keys on the mount. The mount adapter also provides power to IS stabilization and internal focus servos. When used with the Optitek Optitron Lens Controller, precision repeatable remote focus control is also available. The Optitek Prolock EF draws its power directly from the camera mount, so no additional cable is required. The Optitek Prolock EF also features a PL-style clamping lock ring on the Canon EF mount, assuring that the lens will not shift in the lens mount.

  22. I have a clean, well maintained, ready to shoot Sony PMW-EX3 Pro HD camera for sale with a few extras. It's an excellent run and gun camera that is inexpensive to operate. The Sony pop on batteries are inexpensive, light and efficient compared to bricks. I've used inexpensive fast SD cards with the included SxS to SD card adapters and they work great. A 16GB card holds about 50 min. at full 1080p and costs only $17 at B&H. You can use Nikon, or other lenses, with a Nikon to Sony mount adapter, or use the included Sony power zoom which is plenty good to get work done. I am the sole owner/operator. I've never rented it, nor let anyone else touch or even breathe on it. :) $2800 See photos and more details at http://www.prairiepictures.com/gear.html Thanks! Martin
