  1. Hey all, I pretty much just want to get this film in front of strangers. Tell me what you think! I am an iterative type of person, wherein I will go into the next project with what I learned. Here is what I can tell you about this project: Shot in Portland, Oregon - Dec. 2023, Final cut: Feb 2024 I shot this film on an Eclair ACL 2 (and an ACL 1 for B-Roll) using Kodak 500T 16mm Film. I shot 900 feet of film, which comes to exactly 25 minutes and 32 seconds (at 24fps). I sent the film to "The Negative Space," by Nicki Coyle, to be processed and scanned in 4k. The filming was spaced out over 3 days - All of Vincent's lines were in one session; a week later, we shot all of the Dean's lines. The following Saturday, we shot the creepy basement scene. For sound, I used a TASCAM DR-40x with an Audio-Technica AT875R Microphone. The whole setup worked really great, with a wider angle microphone I think the sound of the camera would've been a problem, though you can still here the shutter in some moments, I tried to mask it with room tone added in post. I edited the project in Davinci Resolve with some visual effects in Blender, Photoshop, and After Effects. The Painting was made in Photoshop. I took pictures of DeAndre (Vincent). Similarly, I positioned him to "Not to be Reproduced" by René Magritte (ironic, I know). Then, using Generative Fill, I filtered the image with the prompt: "Abstract Oil Painting" to get the final look. I motion-tracked and often rotoscoped in the final PNG in After Effects, which is difficult when working with 16mm film. I learned a lot with this project from a directing and writing standpoint. My two biggest takeaways are: 1.) I cannot simultaneously operate a camera and direct the actors. I need to hire a Camera Operator next time! 2.) At least one whole page of dialogue didn't make the final cut. This was okay because the dialogue was motivated to have the same end. This means I could cut out a large portion of dialogue to make the interview part more succinct without losing any crucial story points since everything they discussed pointed to the Painting. It was nice to have different dialogue options to intercut, so it worked out in the end. Please let me know what you think!

  3. So I am filming a SciFi short film called "Bandwidth Creek"on the 15th and I'm having one issue. There is a female playing two characters and I still can't figure out how to fool the audience with this. For instance, she's playing the mom of the main male character in his flashback. The same woman is also playing his room mate whom he is having conflict with. Both characters are important so I can't cut either out. Since the mom in the flashback does not have any lines (just flashback visuals) I thought about just shooting behind her or with her hair over her face. We thought about a wig and sunglasses but come on lol. Attached are some stills of the woman I exported from the rehearsal (playing roommate). Anybody have any ideas?
  4. Hello. I have a bit of a dilemma. I'm casting for my next short film and typically cast people based mostly on their acting skills, direct-ability and a general assessment of their personality. I always have a solid idea of what I'd like the characters to look like; however those thoughts are always a bit flexible (sometimes enough to even change sexes). I'll start by saying I'm casting for a 1940s crime drama so it hasn't been easy to find talent who can manage the acting style of that time period (a strict requirement). I completely understand that and I've tried to be as helpful as possible. I know it must be very difficult for many to do. My issue is this...for the first time, I have an actress who was able to deliver the audition scene as needed, able to take direction well and has a great personality... but has a physical feature for some reason I just can't overlook. She's so thin, I can't get past it. I want to but it's so distracting, I'm finding it impossible. I was requesting 135lbs at least for female talent but that was a bit flexible as well. Her stats are listed as 5'7" and 108lbs and to be honest she looks thinner than that. I do believe she would be a great addition to the cast. I just don't feel ok with putting her in the role she auditioned for. I thought I'd get some thoughts from the community in case, I'm just in a "stuck" place and need another perspective.
  5. Hey guys! Lookin for some advice on conducting reharsals for talent for my short film , Dead ED. You can check details on it on the Facebook fan page here: https://www.facebook.com/DEADEDMOVIE I have two main characters: Khan - The protagonist, a man from the other side of the planet forced to work in the desert wastleands ED - Khan's only companion, ED is a service droid designed to protect and clean the wasteland. The relationship between these two characters is similar to a master and a loyal pet. Khan sees ED as something less than a best friend, and will learn ED's true value by the end of the story. My dilemma here is that I have never worked with a character like ED's before. The script is well written with great opportunities for subtext, but the fact that the character is a robot conflicts with the idea of exploring these opportunities (in my mind at the moment) I haven't gone through rehearsals yet, and I figured that I would explore this further with talent, but I would like to hear other input as well. I have gone through my analyzation, but this seems to be the only hiccup for me. What kind of exercises do you suggest for this situation?
