  1. Hey guys, I wanted to see if I could get some opinions and perhaps guidance. I have recently switched over from Epic to Alexa. I am loving the camera but noticing that when using the built in LUTs, the image puts so much of its DR toward protecting highlights and thus has a little more noise than i might like in some scenarios. I have read a lot about shooting 400 ISO and from what I can tell it costs about a stop overall. That said, I have been doing some tests where I am exposing hotter than my waveform would suggest (monitoring in rec 709 and commercial) but without clipping in LOG. I find that once corrected the highlights usually still look amazing but the noise is much more like what i am looking for. I am wondering if there is a way to take the ARRI rec 709 lut down a stop and load it into the camera so that I will naturally expose a bit thicker of an image with cleaner shadows, without gaining down to 400. Of course, also open to opinions on why this might be a flawed idea, or whether it is essentially the same thing as shooting 400 haha. I just find my taste leans toward less noise in mid and shadows, and with the alexa image holding highlights so nicely, i'd prefer to "expose to the right" a bit more without having my images coming in so hot in premiere when the LUT is applied. Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks, Steve

  3. Hey everyone, I am working on a feature right now, (pretty low budget), and recently the Preston follow focus system kind of stops working at random times. There is power running to the MDR, the battery in the hand unit will be very much charged, but the system will not work. I have tried changing frequencies, changing out motor and power cables, repositioning the MDR, and I am running out of ideas. A little more info on my set up; we are shooting on an Alexa Mini, we have a Teradek Bolt 300, and sometimes we put the camera on a steadicam. Whenever the system stops working, I unplug and plug the motor or power cable back in and then it works fine until it goes out again. When it stops working, the MDR will have its lights on, but no one is home. If anyone has experienced this or has any advice, please let me know. Thank you so much!

  5. Hello all, A little back story: I just completed the first week of shooting on a 1 hour episodic television show. Our usual setup is 3 Alexa classics; "A" camera, "B" camera, and a "C" camera/steadicam. Our steadicam body has always been dedicated to that rig, and unless one of the other cameras breaks, we never really press it into service in any other capacity. This is nice, since it allows us to leave the rig mostly configured for the purpose of steadicam, and it can be built really quickly. About a week prior to prep, we found out that "they" wanted to use an Alexa mini as our "C" body this year, to be used on steadicam, and also to be converted for special use when required- handheld inside of cars, hood mounts, etc.... We were all a bit thrown off by this, since we've been using the other cameras for 4 previous seasons, and we know the setup very well. Production didn't give us any additional time to prep (we get 2 days to prep for 22 eight day episodes), and we left the rental house with an Alexa mini that really didn't work for our intended purpose. Some of our issues included the lack of a run/stop cable for preston, lack of camera control without the eyepiece attached, awkward position of the media access door which is blocked by the Arri rod-mounted anton bauer plate (BAP-1), and that the camera weighed too little overall for our steadicam operators liking. I think a lot of advantage comes from the use of the integrated Arri 3 channel handset/MDR, however it wasn't available at the time of prep, and I am not sure they will pay for an additional remote unit, when there are already two other Preston FI+Z's on the show. How are some of you handling the Alexa mini? It seems to me that it lacks a lot of the built-in functionality and ergonomics that are so nice with the other cameras in the line. Has anyone configured it for a studio camera or steadicam body with good success? Thanks in advance for any info.
