  1. WRITER/PRODUCER/VISUAL DESIGNER SEEKING DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY WITH HER/HIS OWN EQUIPMENT WHO CAN EDIT AND PRODUCE — TO PARTNER ON PRODUCTIONS Hello everyone! Thank you, in advance, for taking the time to read my post. If it interests you I look forward to hearing from you... if it doesn't then I simply wish you amazing success on all your projects. I cheer for everyone to get their TV and film projects made! Okay...I'm a writer and producer, and a visual designer. I have multiple completed feature scripts and many more ideas/treatments. I have an open invitation for a pitch meeting with an Emmy winning TV producer who has produced hit after hit. I have received extremely positive feedback and praise on my feature scripts from other producers, known/recognizable TV actors, as well as Emmy nominated writers. Here is an excerpt from my recent thriller script feedback from one Emmy nominated writer who is also a director and a Sundance Grand Jury Prize nominee: " It’s a really well done story and has a lot of box office potential ... It is often thrilling, suspenseful, and downright creepy — all ingredients you need in this genre. You have built a world that feels authentic and isolated, which helps enormously. I think audiences who love to be scared will eat this up. " I quoted them only to assure you that I can write well, as I know you don't want to waste your time anymore than I do. In addition to good feedback I was recently recommended to a lit agent by a couple of producers to be the screenwriter for the adaptation of an autobiographical book about a highly publicized national story. There are many projects I want to develop and shoot, but I need the right partner with whom I can grow with, someone with talent, a similar mindset, and equipment who can shoot and edit, and produce as well. I'm seeking someone who is extremely serious and 0% flaky. I have low budget, low-mid budget, and no-budget feature film projects we can discuss, reality TV projects, even YouTube possibilities. A few are pretty ready to go, some need more development, and many are just loglines or ideas we can build out. I co-produced a feature film (2010) that won a few festivals and had a small theatrical release before going on to its TV release. I have many years in the industry/LA and know some indie directors, distributors, DPs, producers, Emmy nominated writers and EPs, hair & makeup keys, production designers, other great crew, etc. I have good instincts, can think creatively in the moment, have ideas on how to structure funding to shoot, and am excellent at casting as I know what good acting looks and sounds like because I was conservatory trained and acted professionally in the past. In addition I have a B.A. in graphic design and have years of professional experience in NYC, DC, and LA designing posters, one-sheets, brochures, logos, etc. so we'll never have a one-sheet that looks like someone's dog made it in Microsoft Word. I am seeking someone who wants to commit to a real partnership of collaboration and focus on making product that will be captivating and commercially successful, and have a lot of fun as we go. If this sounds like the partnership you are looking for and you are a talented Director of Photography with your own equipment who can edit and produce, please send me an email with a little bit about yourself as well and a link to some of your work. Thanks for reading and for your consideration. I'm looking forward to getting projects DONE! :) EMAIL ME AT THE FOLLOWING EMAIL ADDRESS: partner2produce@gmail.com

  6. Okay, guys and gals!! I have a few questions that hopefully the wealth of knowledge here can answer. First a disclaimer, (I actually like disclaimers for some weird reason): My goal is to lens commercials, films (short or long format), and the occasional music video. If given the opportunity, of course. I currently work for a production house that does very little in all those categories. So in the best interest of my personal goals I'd like to submit the following questions.: Is there a benefit to aligning oneself (as a cameraman/cinematographer/DP) to an ad agency? What are the challenges that arise when you build up a narrative reel, when trying to get into commercials and other types of work? Is it easy to get pigeon-holed as a “Insert Category” DP, or is that something that one unconsciously gravitates to? If most of your current work is primarily short form narrative; How do you branch out into other categories of work? There have been several examples of DPs rising through the camera department ranks, getting the nod for commercial work, narrative, etc., or gaining an opportunity for narrative work through documentary work; how often does that happen nowadays? Is there something that I may be missing as far as learning about how the political climate of our craft is going? Does that vary from region to region? If so, what is it like currently in Texas? (I live in Houston, where the bulk of the work is news and oil & gas.) Should I talk with a Union Rep. to figure out how I can better align myself with shooting productions in the aforementioned categories? There are only a handful of people in my state, that have any dealings with unions, and I'm wondering; Would it be better to move to another city, and start all over with the title “aspiring DP”? I'm sure I'll have a ton of other questions, but these are the most nagging to me!! Thank you in advance for your epic help!!!
  7. Just wanted to share a short film I was the Cinematographer on. The whole project was completed from start to finish in one month and a half, given our time frame I'm happy with the short film. I've been privilege to meet some great people, the whole thing was based here in Seattle. Camera: BMCC 2.5k RAW Lens: Rokinon 17mm 2T and the Sigma 18-35mm Art 1.8 Edited: Final Cut X Colored: DaVinci Resolve 12 Although it's in another language and sometimes hard to understand; it was a crazy fast experience, I'm very glad to have worked on it. I've worked on lot's of Bollywood Productions in LA and Las Vegas back in the day as a PA. Particularly "My name is Khan" It's funny after all those years I'm now involved in an indie Bollywood Production. I hope you enjoy it... Please, I'd love to get some feed back on the Cinematography of the short. I wan't to improve and get better. I'd like to know any constructive feed back on things. The last night scenes of the movie were shot on available light, no bounce or anything... It was also our first days of the shoot and we were still not up to speed on things. I think some of those suffered the most. **there are some shots one or two that were shot on the BMPCC with a very bad soft lens and they unfortunately made it in the film, also some weird artifacts from shooting in the night in really low light at the very end of the movie.** smile emoticon
  8. Hello all, I am in my final year of studying film production and I am currently doing research about cinematography and color grading. I am trying to find out more about the collaboration/ workflow between the DP and the Colorist and the issues regarding the authority over the look. I am also looking into whether new, aspiring cinematographers should be their own colorists. I was wondering if you could please share your opinions about this from your experiences so far. As a Cinematographer, how were your collaborations with Colorists ? (and vice-versa). What can DPs/Colorists do to ensure they can work together successfully? If you are working both as a Cinematographer and a Colorist, why did you choose to have both roles and how difficult was the transition from cinematography to color grading? Your help would be much appreciated!
  9. Hello all, I just recently posted a DP reel that combines a bunch of my 2nd Unit work. I'm waiting for a few new movies to come out before I can add to it, but this is what I have for now. 13. Hey everybody, I’m shooting a short on Super-16 film at the end of October in Los Angeles and I’m looking for a DP. I’m hoping to shoot on an Arri 416. (The last time I made a Super-16 short I used the Aaton A-minima, which I loved, but apparently that is now defunct.) So... I would love to talk with anybody who has extensive experience with the 416 -- loading, etc. Also, if any anybody HAS the 416, that would of course be a double bonus. Or if anybody KNOWS a DP with his own 416, please pass this along. We are low budget, but THIS IS PAID. Please contact me privately and I can tell you more about the project. Tone wise, it’s (hopefully) a mix of “Willy Wonka” and “Jackass”. You can see a link to some of my previous shorts below. Thanks so much! Bo Price Www.boprice.com Boprice@gmail.com

  15. Howdy, y'all- I'm a 27 year-old DP in the New York/New Jersey area and as I've been looking for more and more work over the years I feel that I have been hitting a wall. I come from a G&E background so I've been more used to forming relationships with DPs, owner/ops, and production companies, but I find getting work as a DP to be a different ballgame, so I wanted to know what the pros and cons of hiring an agent are- do they actually find you work, is the cost of hiring someone offset by the increase in gigs, is it better to wait until you join local 600 to hire an agent versus having one in the non-union world, what are some better agencies for less known DPs, is it better to hire someone local or can they be on the other side of the country, etc. etc. Any advice would be appreciated because anything's gotta be better than blindly giving resumes to people who don't know you or scouring Mandy.com. Thanks in advance!
  16. Hey Guys, I was contacted several days ago to DP a short feature and was sent the script; however, I had a few questions: Is it bad industry practice to suggest changes in the script? After reading through it several times, I believe that some changes in dialogue etc. would really improve the overall story, but I'm hesitant to suggest changes to the director. Also, could you walk me through your personal processes as cinematographer when evaluating scripts (subtext, emotional analysis etc.) before production. Thanks, Sam
  17. Hi, I’m looking for a car cinematography specialized DP for a high end SPEC commercial. Green screen experience is required as the featured car will be driven on a large green screen cyclorama. Although a car specialist, this person must be good at lighting people as well. The shoot will take place on July 25-26 in Los Angeles. Non-Union shoot. Pay negotiated upon experience. Please apply only if you specialize in car cinematography. We need to confirm someone ASAP. If interested, please email a link to your reel/portfolio to crewapplications@mzo.tv Thanks.
  18. Hey guys, These past 6 months have been pretty good to me in terms of work and I'm starting to think about ways I can reinvest some of the income I've made back into equipment in order to a) make myself more marketable as a dp and camera assistant, b ) make it easier for me to do my job well and c) turn a profit by taking small rental fees here and there on gear I bring to each production, etc. My question is, what does everybody consider to be the best options for investment items that don't lose value as quickly, yet are often in demand on set. As a camera assistant, my first inclination is to invest in a great monitor like a smallHD dp7 knowing that I might be able to ask for an extra $50 or 60/day on top of my normal day rate and that it would also help me do my job easier, while being a great monitor for jobs I take as a dp. The next item I thought about was getting a Dana Dolly as they're only around $800 and they go for ~100/day on productions. That's a pretty good rental rate and for lower budget sets, they're very useful. So does anybody have gear suggestions for someone starting out investing in equipment who would like to purchase quality items that would be useful to oneself, yet also make some money on the side that wouldn't depreciate quite as fast as say a camera body? Obviously, lenses are what many will say, but aside from cheapies, they're a bit out of my price range at the moment.
  19. Hello, I'm an aspiring DP who is primarily working as a camera assistant in NYC. I re-located to the city from LA after college for reasons mostly pertaining to preference. In the past year (moved here June '14), I've slowly, but steadily re-established myself and am now working quite regularly; no complaints there. However, now that I am not scrambling as much financially, I want to re-focus on shooting more projects in order to one day fully transition into full time DP work. When I lived in California, I had a lot of young director friends from college that I knew, but now that I am in a new city, it has proven to be a bit of a task finding collaborators. So, my question is, does anybody have any useful tips for meeting directors as a young DP? It seems that how much gear you have can play a role in getting work in the beginning, but beyond that, is there anything anybody would recommend? Ideally, I'd like to avoid shooting student projects. Thanks! MG
  20. Hey all, I am currently looking for a DP well versed in 35mm scope photography for my next short film "Secrets of Aperture." "Secrets of Aperture" was funded earlier this year through Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/colinandconnor/portal-secrets-of-aperture-webseries We are set on shooting 35mm anamorphic, and are aspiring for a fully optical workflow, including a print. I have been perusing this forum for a long time now, and found it a fantastic resource for learning about film. Always planned on hiring a DP through here as opposed to Mandy or elsewhere. We have no exact shoot dates but are looking at some time in mid-end of February. The job is decently paid, but will be determined later. If you are interested would love to hear from you. Please send demo reels to colinandconnor "at" gmail.com or message me through here. Thanks everyone!

  23. Greetings, I am DPing my first feature film, it starts production in about a week. I am looking for advice or tips from DPs that have shot a feature before. This is a dialogue heavy film with lots of conflict between main characters. I am looking for any kind of advice on shooting dialogue scenes, communicating with your crew on set to be more efficient, clues on making sure you have coverage or just anything you wish you would have know going into your first feature. I know it's broad, but if you have something I would love to hear it. Story Summary As protagonist, Anna, cleans out her childhood home to help sell it, she stumbles upon a tiny mailbox full of letters from a mysterious childhood pen-pal. Anna originally discovered the mailbox growing in her garden with a letter addressed to her when she was 10. Heartbroken and angry about her parent’s impending divorce, Anna found catharsis and comfort in reading and writing letters to her new friend. 25 years later and similarly broken, Anna once again finds solace in the letters and embarks on a journey to find the true identity of her mystery pen-pal. But what Anna discovers is the last thing she expected to find. Thanks All! Marcus

  25. Hello fellow cinematographers and film makers! If I could borrow 3,750 frames at 24fps of your time to review my new reel on my website listed below. It would mean a great deal to me if you could offer some critique afterward. I'm in the middle of a huge push to take my work and career to greater quality and new opportunities. I would be happy to return the favor. Thank you and happy shooting! Alex www.alexfuerst.com
