  1. Hi all, I'm shooting a teaser for a project soon, and I'd like to end up with what appears to be one long continuous take, but would be actually 3 shots. The setup is simple the frame starts on black, the camera dollying backward to reveal the blackness is the pupil of the actor in the scene, focus would be pulled remotely, for a continually shifting DoF to allow for constant focus. The camera will continue to dolly backwards from it's initial position, using I'm assuming a macro lens, to it's final position across the room roughly 16ft back from the actor. I'm using a BMCC 2.5k and when the camera hit's it's final position, I need to be at an 11mm focal length to see the entire width of the room from that position. My thought is to use a Macro lens for the initial X feet of the camera movement, shooting as I retreat, getting slightly more coverage than I need, and having the second shot be on my wider non-macro lens, on the same dolly, moving back at the same speed, and then edit them together at the point the shots "overlap", creating a seamless transition between one shot/lens and the next. This seems possible, I'm not sure about the specifics of lens selection, but I think this is do-able. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  3. Hi Everyone, I am a beginner Director of Photography and I'm still learning the camera side to things as a DOP. I'm much stronger on the lighting side than the camera side and need a little advise. I'm shooting a science-fiction story in the near future and I've done some research on lens and how to sell the Sci-fi look, and the thing that keeps popping up is Anamorphic lens. I have little understanding of how Anamorphic lenses work and will be shooting this project on the Sony F3 - From what I've gathered the chip sensor can't do Anamorphic with out a converter lens, but I heard those lessen the quality and aren't the same as the real deal. I've been watching a ton of interviews of cinematographers and they say to go with a wide Anamorphic lens and shoot everything crisp - even my professors say the same. So my question is, what is a great alternative option to a Anamorphic lens for the Sony F3? P.s. The lenses that come with the Camera from the school's rental house is a set of prime lenes (35mm, 50mm, 85mm) and Zeiss CP.2 Lenes (18mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm). We are allowed to go to other rental houses but the budget is limited to around $1500 (not confirmed yet, but roughly around that). P.s.s. Also - last note - any additional tips on shooting and lighting Science-Fiction would be much appreciated. All the best.
  4. Hi All, I'm currently DOP for a social realism graduation film, a bit naive and a bit nervous because my approach is to experiment and shoot with the Sony F55 and 16mm Zeiss Distagon prime lenses throughout the whole of the short film. This means I have to operate with 2x crop, which isn't much of an issue because I have all the necessary primes and zoom lens to cover the shots needed, but from the camera test footage the lenses appear a bit too soft. I was intending to get a soft look, but I didn't realise how soft they would actually be. I'm not too sure if the lenses need calibrating in anyway, but I won't jump to conclusions because my knowledge doesn't go that far, however they do seem to perform slightly better in low light. My film is being filmed out on the majority of Day Exteriors, so I'm just wondering if it's worth sticking to my guns, or whether it might be best to resort to other lenses. I also have the option of using the Zeiss CP.2 prime lenses, and I'm now thinking this could be my best choice. I'm a fan of the work by Stuart Bentley on This is England 90' and I've read up and come to understand that he operated with the Arri Amira, Arri Alura zoom lenses and the vintage Canon K35 primes. I'm just wondering if anyone has any useful advice on how I could achieve a similar look to this work. I'm looking a visual references such as: Tyrannosaur (2011) Dop: Erik Wilson This is England 90' (2015) Dop: Stuart Bentley Fish Tank (2009) Dop: Robbie Ryan (The images shown in this post currently don't have a colour grade applied, this is my next move as of tomorrow) If the images don't seem to appear, check out this shareable link to a google drive file of the test: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B67phC0DGkQYUmJEY1FtN3RHOFk Fire away at any questions if I've missed anything, or if it doesn't quite make sense. Any help would be massively appreciated! Thanks, Matt

  7. Hi, I'm selling a gorgeous Arri Zeiss Standard Speed T2.1 PL mount. I got this lens last year from a retired cinematographer, it was part of his back-up set so it looks like "new old stock", pretty rare. Price: $4500 (4000E) Lens is located in Athens, Greece. I can ship worldwide. I accept Paypal and Bank transfer, although I'd prefer the latter for obvious reasons. If you prefer Paypal you'll have to pay the fees, shipping with next day DHL is on me. - Optically the lens looks extremely clean, no cleaning marks, no dust (I can see 1-2 very-very small particles under close inspection, my CN-Es already have more), no scratches, no fungus. 9.9/10 - Cosmetically the lens is very clean, doesn't even have usage marks on the focus gear. 9.9/10 - Mechanically the lens feels great, smooth focus and aperture. Due to it not have being used in a long time, I'd advise a focus lubrication service at some point just to be on the safe side. 9.5/10 The lens comes with original Arri front cap, and a PStechnik rear PL cap. I can also provide an extra rear black rubber cap if needed. As you can see the lens is in great condition, I can ship it to any reputable technician if you want to have it inspected. I also offer a 3-day inspection and return period, but only within Europe, returns from outside the EU would probably complicate things. I also have a 40mm in similar condition which I will list later, let me know if interested.
  8. Hi community, I have two questions related to poor-man's macro solutions. I am about to purchase a Krasnogorsk K3 and look for ways to shoot in macro with it. One idea was to just put a diopter - these close-up rings - in front of the lens. I know it's a super cheap solution, but that's how I roll. Does anybody have any experiences in that regard? At a later stage I'd buy a macro lens for it. I know it has a Pentax mount, so am I assuming correctly that I can just use any fitting macro lens with that mount then? Thanks for helping me out! Manuel

  14. Hi there! This is my first topic in this beautiful forum, so hello everyone :) I want to know what do you think about the Angénieux 15-150 because on the internet there's so little information and no footage. So if you have footage, you're welcome to share. Someone offers me Angénieux 12-120 and Angénieux 15-150 for 100 euro each one, so I want to know if that's a good deal for the Blackmagic Pocket too (I would use them just with the blackmagic) Greetings!
  15. Preparing for a documentary shoot which will shoot in six locations, each with a different crew and DP. We're searching for a universal package that can get each unit matching as close as possible. Cameras are Sony FS7 across the board. For the most part, we'll be renting the Canon 15.5-47 or the 14.5-60 along with the Canon 30-105. However, in one of our locations, the only short zoom available is the Angenieux 15-40. My gut says that the Ang won't mesh well with the CN-E zooms, but it's been a few years since I've shot with the Ang and wanted a second opinion. Does anyone have experience matching the Angenieuxs to the CN-E zooms?
  16. We own a set of Schneider Xenon FF Prime lenses. Our lenses are PL mount but for an upcoming shoot we will need to use the lenses on a Canon DSLR. We purchased the mount conversion kit from Schneider to put an EF mount on but no instructions. It's seems straight forward enough but it would still be nice to hear if anyone has experience doing this. Biggest question is how many shims to use. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Ray

  19. This would be a amazing lens for the RED 2K, Blackmagic Pocket Camera, Digital Bolex or S16 film camera. The glass has no scratches, coating marks, cleaning marks and is in perfect condition. Mechanically, the lens is very solid and smooth all the way around. It' a Arri B mount that can be adapted to any other mount. This lens was converted to Super16mm by OPTEX, which is considered the best in the industry. The Cooke 10.8 - 60mm was the Super16mm equivalent of the Cooke 9-50mm zoom. This lens is known for these exceptional qualities: - This Cooke lens "breaths" very, very little, so there is no image shift when focusing (the Zeiss 10-100mm was known to breath, and wasn't well regarded in that manner). The Cooke has complete internal focusing, so the outer barrel does rotate or shift upon focus. - This Cooke lens has a close focus of 1.6 ft, which means you can focus a few inches from the front of the lens. This is opposed to many zoom lenses that have a close focus of 5 ft. - But perhaps the best feature of theses Cooke Zooms (compared say something like a Zeiss lens), is in regards to using them with digital sensors. It has the "Cooke look" , which is much kinder on the skin of the actors. It also really helps to take the harsh digital edge off of the digital sensor image, and many feel this is why it feels more 'filmic'. The lens is in perfect shape and has been verified one year ago by an Aaton specialist in Montreal. Since, it has been use only once for a fiction film. Everything works as it should. It's been used with care. I sell it for 3,900$ US (negotiable) + shipping fee (international). It comes with a metallic case, lens & mount cap. I ship from Montreal, QC, Canada.
  20. Cooke Varotal 20-100mm T3.1/ PL mount Zoom lens for 35mm motion picture format. Serial No. 787404 The lens has a re-polished front element, new cam-followers, and new rollers & bearings (focus & zoom). It has only been used twice (on two-day shoots) since this work was done. I purchased the lens through Serious Gear Company in Seattle for $5,878. Kit includes: Clamp ring support 15mm lens bridge pair 15x440mm stainless steel support rods fitted transport case. I have it listed for sale on Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/222065415693 Starting bid: $4,000 Buy Now: $5,400 ABOUT THE LENS Lens designer Gordon H. Cook designed the 35mm Cooke 20-100mm, T3.1 Varotal zoom lens, released in 1971. It was the first high quality zoom designed for professional motion picture photography that incorporated a totally new design concept that has remained the basis for all Cooke zoom lenses subsequently produced. It was produced through the late 1980s. The lens was made with a sealed front focus unit and fixed front element that eliminated the risk of dirt and moisture being drawn into the lens and allowed for easy fitting of matte boxes and filter holders onto the front. The lens was enhanced with anti-reflective wide-band Varomag high performance coatings. This advanced technology achieved new standards in shadowed area definition, light transmission and durability, in addition to giving ghost and flare-free characteristics. Gordon H. Cook received the 1988 Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Gordon E. Sawyer Award for this and other technological advancements during his career as an optical designer.
  21. Hey Guys, Recently I picked up a used Tokina 28-70 f2.8 on eBay. For the most part it seems like a nice lens but this one seems to have some an issue: When I switch to manual focus it seems to hit some bumps and makes a grinding noise when I focus it. I would normally be okay with it if it didn't affect the image but it does. I placed the lens on a sandbagged locked down tripod and attempted a rack focus. When it hits a certain point from focusing the entire image jumps like the tripod shakes like someone hit it. Furthermore the auto focus is really really noisy (not a big deal since I don't really take stills but might be indicative of the issue). I tried several different attempts and verified the tripod was locked down. Has anyone ever experienced this? Is there a fix? Should I just return the lens? Thanks!
  22. I wanted to upload some examples but I can't for some reason. I have screenshots not urls. I can't seem to search the answer to this question considering I wouldn't exactly know how to search it. I don't know what to look for. So my question is about perspective (I think this is the proper term to use). I noticed that 16mm, 35mm, and 85mm lenses not only have different field of views, but they have a different look. 16mm makes the face look skinnier, and the higher focal lengths made the faces wider. This I already knew but my question requires that I bring this up. The Question: If I am using a camera with a super35 sensor with a 85mm FF lens attached, will the 85mm FF lens give me the same prospective of the face considering the crop factor from the sensor? I hope this is not a dumb question. Usually somebody may get a 50mm lens or something close to that to have the same field of view as the 85mm on the crop sensor. Im afraid that doing this will make my picture change thats all.
