  2. Hey all, This has been a question I've had for a while. Are there a specific type of globe/light source that is commonly used to replace practical bulbs? I.e. If you're trying to reach a certain exposure, and want to use practicals, where could one find an assortment of different globes to reach a certain light level? Thanks!
  3. Hello, all! We are preparing to shoot a film out in West Texas (in the middle of the desert) soon. Our concerns are primarily with the heat (temperatures are expected to be a high of 101F) and bathrooms (as we will be far away from any nearby restroom). Additionally, we will be filming with RED cameras, and have a cast/crew of roughly 15-20 people. We have it in our plan to bring tents, massive fans, and water in bulk for breaks. And, we anticipate taking a 3-4 hour break during midday (when temperatures peak). However, we will have a lead actor in a fully black, long-sleeved/long-legged costume, plus another actor in a full body armor suit (a prop robot suit). Would any one care to share some advice, given past experiences with filming in similar situations? Thanks! John

The smallest one up to 3kW (able to work with an Studio 3000W) The bigger one (at the moment) is up to 7kW with double output. 16A + 32A plugs and the dimmer works with two lamps at the same time (up to 5kW + 2kW lamps) The Flicker Dimmer is up to 3kW and it has the capability to generate flicker for special effects The small dimmer cost £99, for more info you can check it in the website www.strikedimmers.com

  6. Revamped Interface Offers Enhanced User Experience; Now Available on Android and Windows WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. (May 28, 2015) - Panavision has released a new and groundbreaking version of its popular PANASCOUT application. Adopted by industry professionals as an essential creative tool during preproduction, PANASCOUT was the first application to allow capturing and sharing of images encoded with the crucial metadata needed on location scouts. PANASCOUT is available for free on all mobile devices running iOS, Android and Windows platforms. A wide range of intuitive functions and a redesigned user interface make it even easier to record and share images and information with the entire creative team. PANASCOUT now offers video capture in PANAFRAME, a framing overlay that displays a choice of aspect ratios from true widescreen 2.40 (Anamorphic), to 1.85 (Super 35mm), 1.78 (16:9 HD), and 1.33 (4:3) and custom. Metadata automatically incorporates date/time, file name, focal length, aspect ratio, and any notes added by the user, which can be saved to a folder or the device's library. A "Map it" button allows photos to be plotted on a map identifying the exact location where they were taken. Additionally, by clicking the "P" button, users can find contact information for the closest Panavision office anywhere in the world. Additional features available via in-app purchases include: Video capture - now with PANAFRAME overlay and metadata Folder management - organize, rename and sort photos/videos Customization tools - create custom aspect ratios and control the transparency of the masking bars Additional image data - add GPS coordinates, compass direction, and sunrise/sunset to image metadata Sharing capabilities - send images and videos direct to Dropbox, YouTube, Tumblr or email Zoom and Prime lens controls - options for previewing with Zoom and Prime lenses, which includes a focal length display in the 35mm film format equivalent. Built in functionality automatically identifies each device camera and then converts the focal length to display the equivalent of the 35mm film format Audio notes -- add voice notes to photos, or text notes or tags to photos and videos For more information, visit www.panascout.com.
  7. Hello, We are shooting a short film. One of the locations is a 3rd story Apartment, with small balconies on some windows. We really want to use the location because it is an original 1970s Austrian Apartment with interiors. How would you light it though? Or would you? Shooting with daylight for three days could give us some continuity issues. Or would you shoot all of the shots featuring windows at once and then everything else seperately? I thought about putting lights on some of the balconies and putting up see-thru curtains , so they're kinda blown out, but it wouldn't work on all the windows. Do you guys have any ideas?

  9. Im shooting a short film this weekend and the director wants a shot of a man shovelling dirt off the "lens" to reveal the himself standing over a hole in the ground in the forest. a Very classic Breaking Bad shot. Would love any advice as to how I should accomplish this... I've rented a Wide angle low angle Prism for the shot and I'm planning on buying a big sheet of plexi glass to put over the camera and cover with dirt. Any ideas (besides digging a massive hole in the ground) Thanks, Cole
  10. Hello there! FIRST OFF: WARNING; I am complete NOOB in this field so expect to see something really bad. I am just posting this to get some basic feedback on how to present myself on video (how I should stand, look into the camera, how I should move my face muscles when I speak and so forth), some lightning changes, editing changes, etc.,. My purpose of shooting video is appearing as a "spokesperson" (so yes, I am definitively wearing the wrong outfit). I will get better clothing, another mic instead of the one inside my camera and a complete white background since my camera has "wrong" color sampling 4:2:1 for using green screens (if I understand things correctly). I just wanted to try to shoot something and edit some in Adobe Premiere Pro CC to get some feeling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63vvsATq9U8 Film was shoot with: Canon LEGRIA HF G25 in Cinema Mode (a button you can choose; this one, auto or manual mode). I also used two softboxes which is why you see two shadows (and I added artifical lightning in Adobe Premiere Pro CC, just to play around). I added used "expander"-preset inside "Dynamics" which is an Audio Effect in Adobe Premiere Pro CC to cut away all background noise which the camera otherwise pick up. I'm deciding on whether to get a shotgun microphone or TRAM 50 lavalier. What are your suggestions? I am also curious on how to do with the lightning, how close or far away I should be with the camera so I can use the "rule of third" (standing in the middle just look like a poor mugshot if you ask me; my room is about 3,5 meters wide where I stand; yes I will shoot in my apartment). I will also get some simple lightning above my head so I can "pop out" of my, upcoming, white background. Feel free to give harsh but well-meant suggestions on what I can change 'till my next video besides the obvious clothing, hairstyle, added make-up and such. I am very excited to hear from you professionals and highly experienced film- and/or promotional video makers. And yes, you may laugh your butt off at my bad video! ;-) Take Care & Have An Awesome Day! / Max K.
  11. Hey all- Sometimes whilst reading AC I'll find that gaffers on bigger sets put together sweet wireless iPhone-controlled DMX systems. Have any of you done this yourselves, on smaller budgets or for smaller sets? I think it would be really cool to have at my disposal. Here's a post I just put together on my website about it: http://robertboscacci.com/2014/02/11/dmx/ Let me know if I'm just wasting my time/money. -Rob
  12. Hey there I'm the DP on a tenacious short film project set in Zimbabwe without the budget (or balls) to go and shoot there. Team is looking for a colonial style farm house within LA area (90min radius max) that could double for Zimbabwe farm lands. Planning for extensive VFX BG augmentation/replacement, obviously, but a good start would be nice. Any ideas or experience with this?
