Should I get the new vraptor, or the old dragon 8k vv?
Edith blazek posted a topic in RedHello, I'm looking to buy a cinema camera in this range of price and the 2 options I have come to are between the new red vraptor, and a old used red dragon 8k vv, which would be the better bet? could I get decent money renting the dragon vv? I'm in the DMV area of the US btw. Now why these cameras? Well it's because I actually like the look of red cameras (it just appeals to me more) and for my workflow I like having the 8k (personally speaking, I know I will get some up my ass for this tho), and I can use Leica m mount lenses so that kinda alot of other options are out of the running. I know the vraptor absolutely has a technical advantage over the dragon in every way and it has great image quality, but I like the gritty look and aesthetic of the dragon sensor with the legacy color science, to me it exemplifies what I associate with the look of red cameras the most and I'd have to do some work in post to get that out of the vraptor since you can't choose legacy color when shooting but can only work on that through selecting legacy color in redcine-x (not the end of the world I realize, but prefer to go with something I know will give me the aesthetic I want as I haven't seen any footage matching the dragon from the vraptor), and I also have no option for hdrx or any resolution options besides whole numbers on the vraptor. Basically I'm dealing with the age old conundrum of practicality vs aesthetics and I don't know where to go. If anyone has some advice, please give it to me, also if you have also pondered how to make the vraptor look like the older red cameras and succeeded in matching them based on the dragon, please tell me your ipp2 settings.

Thoughts on Consignment?
Jonathan Jones posted a topic in General DiscussionWhat's everyone's thoughts on consigning a camera at a reputable camera house? I'm considering purchasing for the first time and I want to hear your experiences with it: the good, the bad and the ugly. I have a good relationship at this place and I've been chatting with a trusted rental agent (and friend) for a few weeks as we've looked at the data: it seems like cameras will generally pay themselves off in about 2-3 years, including a standard 50/50 profit split. Is this a wise way to pay off a large investment? Thanks in advance, appreciate you all.
Mark Evans posted a topic in Students and New Filmmakersgreetings, This question has probably been asked a hundred times but the goal posts keep changing so here I am. Basically I want to shoot a short film. I'm willing to spend up to 15k for a camera kit and want to make sure I'm getting the best bang for buck I can. The idea takes place in the Australian desert and I'll be looking for hot sweaty actors and landscape glorious colour. There won't be much call for low light conditions. I'm a visual effects artist so I will be adding in various effects such as heat haze and so on and there will be green screen work later in the film. I'd like colour depth to play with and as much resolution as I can afford. I'm not looking for a hand held effect but there will be action shots with possibly a whip pan or two. I'll need several shots close to ground and tracking across the landscape. I was looking at the black magic but got told to stay away and go for a canon eos with nice lenses. So many choices - its like picking tiles for the house! any advise people may have and I'm all ears cheers mark
Aaton XTR Plus
James Beale posted a topic in AatonI am looking to purchase a Aaton XTR Plus, but I cannot find one. The only one I have found is one in LA but I have questions about its past as the seller says: "I am not a filmmaker and don't know....." it sounds like stolen kit to me. So back to my point, would anyone be able to help me on my way to finding one of these cameras. Thanks.
Aaton LTR 54 Purchase Advise & Servicing in Europe
Alexander Boyd posted a topic in AatonHello everyone! I've done quite some research about the different Aaton LTR 54s, but still I would love to hear your thoughts about this particular one and it's associated price. I'm about to buy an Aaton LTR 54 (#897). So it's an early LTR 54 which was converted from 16mm to Super 16. It features 32fps Top Speed, Mechanical Drive for Mags, Optional Light Meter, Optional Relay optics for VR 30 tube tap. It was owned by a professional director of photography and comes with a few accessories. In 2010 it was serviced for the last time so I'm expecting to have it serviced again quite soon. The price for the complete kit is $3000. My questions are: (1) I'm a young director/filmmaker. Like many of us, almost all of my jobs are done using digital cameras. However, from time to time I am doing more personal projects (shorts, docs) and I'd love to have a S16 camera to experiment. E.g. I'm not planning to use the camera on any paid jobs. However, I don't have anything planned as of yet. Now would you rather wait and only buy the camera once I have a project or would you seriously consider buying it right now since the price makes it quite attractive. (2) Any names/houses that offer to service the camera in EUROPE? Thanks a lot for your help, Alex
