Displays and Color Correction
Nicholas Lorini posted a topic in Grading, DI and TelecineI have a 43' plasma screen I am using to correct and grade for a feature film. I'm a bit confused about Rec 709. What I think I understand is that it is a standard color gamut used across many displays, including my plasma screen. I've gone in to the color settings under display on my computer and found that I can change the display profile of my plasma screen. The display was set to HD-709-A by default it seems. Is this safe or should I choose another option like HDR HDTV Display (Rec 709) - EOTF SMPTE 2084 or HDTV Display (Rec 709) - EOTF Rec. 1886 (Gamma 2.4) OR should I calibrate the display? If so, under what parameters (white point, gamma, etc.)? Another issue I have is that I don't know if I should grade on a Rec 709 display if the film will be largely distributed over streaming services to be viewed on home computers. Or if I should make two separate grades, one that is sRGB friendly and the other Rec 709. Any advice on this matter is welcome and much appreciated! Thanks, Nick
Colour Spaces in Resolve
Connor Adam posted a topic in Grading, DI and TelecineHi, I'm trying to get my head around some basic concepts of working with different colour spaces when grading (specifically, in Resolve) and am hoping some of you may be able to shed some light on it all. I am using a Macbook Pro with DaVinci Resolve, outputting through a Blackmagic Mini Monitor into a HP Dreamcolor Z24X. Am I right in thinking that the correct way to grade with this setup would be to work in the sRGB colour space in Resolve, and then set my monitor's colour space to the one relevant to my delivery? Eg if I want to grade for cinema projection I can set the monitor to DCI-P3, for DVD I could do Rec 709 and for web I can do sRGB. And presumably Resolve's sRGB colour space will be able to 'convert' the output to say DCI-P3 or Rec 709 so I can accurately see the video on a monitor set to those standards? All the best, Connor
noob question, sRGB and REC709
Cristian Arevalo posted a topic in Grading, DI and TelecineNoob question, don´t laugh. I´ve made my research and I don´t really understand the phenomena. Let´s say I want to grade a video for broadcast, I´m grading it in sRGB on my monitor and I forget to choose the REC709. How my video will look on broadcast? It will look darker (more constrasty)? The second question: When I toggle between sRGB and REC709 I see a slight change in contrast. Viewing in REC709 my video looks contrasty. Is this how my image should look on broadcast? Thank you!
