  2. Hey everyone, I've been looking for a solid, hands-on introductory class for a while now and I'm looking for some advice, recommendations, tips, things to look (out) for. The program should give me a foundation on which I can build for the coming years. I want to learn the tools and craft, not how to use a particular camera. I've found three solid options so far, and they are: 1- Maine Media Workshops (Maine, USA): 10 week intensive cinematography workshop. PROS: Asked around and this program is definitely solid with some world class instructors. CONS: Extremely expensive. (16k) 2- Global Institute (LA, USA): The foundational programs. PROS: World class program and instructors, located in L.A. CONS: Asked a friend, apparently even the foundational programs are a bit too advanced for someone who's never worked in the camera department. Pretty expensive (expensive at about 10k for a bunch of classes). 3- Afilms (Barcelona, Spain): 3 month Feature Film Cinematography. PROS: Solid program, but not as good as the other two though significantly cheaper. CONS: Starts in a year, that's in quite a long time. I feel like doing this in a couple of months. I don't mind studying anywhere in the world, as long as I can justify it to myself. The class should be technical. I've been curating and improving my eyes for a while now and I'm pretty familiar with filmmaking at many levels, but I want to demystify light (or at least start the process), as I feel it will benefit me greatly as a director. I also feel like shaping light, so being able to DP my own little projects, explore studio photography etc. is something I'm interested in. I'm not under the illusion that I will become a DP after this workshop, I just want to be able to think like one at a basic level, so I can improve myself in the future. Director's showreel if anyone's curious. Thanks in advance.
  3. I live in Australia where there isn't a lot of film work, so having a film education would make you more employable. I want to be a cinematographer, but there are no cinematography courses so I thought that if I studied a Photography degree, these skills could be transferable? What do you think? (I don't want to study an overall film degree because you must be a writer and I am not)! I've attaches a photo of some of the degree units.

  5. Hello Everyone, I am a T.A. in a cinematography class at Arizona State and I convinced my teacher to do a workshop with a 16mm camera. Being how new our Film School is we have no film cameras, only digital, so we are renting an SRIII to show the class and possibly shoot some stuff. My professor and I wanted to show everyone what it's like to shoot on film and how careful you have to be with exposure, how to use light meters, etc., and implementing these structures for when you shoot on digital. Rather than the typical status quo of students just blindly shooting and guessing on exposure. I was reaching out to the cinematography community for help, if anyone has any short ends or exposed super 16 film we could use to help the students with (show how to load the magazines, etc.) that would be amazing. Kind of a long shot to ask on here but I thought it wouldn't hurt. Thanks, Danner Gardner
  6. I'm a senior in high school and I really want to go into the film industry, the problem is that I live in one of the smallest towns in Alabama with very little money. I have no idea how to get started, or where to go, should I go to film school? I really don't want to be 80,000 in the hole but to accomplish my dream I'll honestly do just about anything, does anybody know what I should do? The only experience I have is filming my schools athletic events for the coaches with a home video camera, please help if you can. Thank you, Peyton
  7. Good evenining to everyone, i'm writing this topic because I need help with a project for university. First of all, sorry if this is not the right place to ask for help! Here's the exercise: We have to create a movie, within various movies. We need to choose around 10 films and make them work together, through cutting, creating a whole new narrative. It's not a "mashup" or "remix" movie, it's a movie created by various movies where they combine together in order to get a new narrative and make sense through the rules of classic cinema cutting I tried to search Youtube and Vimeo for examples but all I can find is "mashups" within the best movies of this year or previous ones.. I'm sorry, English is not my native language, but I think I expressed myself correctly! Thank you all, I hope somebody replies me!
  8. Hello community, I am extatic to be a part of this forum. I am a recent gradute with a Bachelors of Science in Communications Technology consentration in Video Production from the New England School of Communications. I now reside in Las Vegas and have been looking into seeking a higher education. A few programs I have considered in my search are Bachelors in Film and Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing to name a few. I have several goals I wish to achieve in my life time in the film industry, which include being a cineamtographer and writer to name a few. I am very very interested in furthering my education but want to make sure i get the proper degree that will help me get a job and not just look good on my resume. Can someone please assits me with some advice on this matter, and any degrees or programs that you know of that will be beneficial for the job market of the future. 10. After a summer of not doing much but making lattes for Hollywood folks and making a short film that I ended up not finishing, I feel behind as a student filmmaker. Are there any simple but effective practices that a person with a camera can get in the habit of to improve their skills? Skills such as: framing, camera movement, lighting, and composition. An example I heard of was to film ten second clips displaying dramatic light changes ie: striking a match in a dark room. I hope many can chime in on this!
  11. Hey im still in highschool just going into grade 12 i live in canada and was wondering which film school to go to. I know the everyone says that Ryerson is the best in canada but i just feel like its more theory then hands on (i know that you do do films and such but not as much). My other thoughts were the new york film academy in the US and the national film and television school in the UK. I feel like those schools are a lot more hands on and getting set experience when ryerson is more this is how film began kinda stuff. So my question really is is it worth the extra money to go to a film school outside of canada? Thanks, Eric
  12. Hi everyone, in few days I'm gonna show my short film to a commission for my graduation... now, until now I just worked on my laptop, never tried to see the result on TV, but as soon as I did it... I really freaked out! watching the film on my laptop, everything is good: high quality definition, bluish and desaturated look which is exactly what I wanted to achieve, no digital noise... when I saw it on TV, it was yellowish and very saturated, really bad definition with a LOT of digital noise... I don't really know what to do, my school career will be probably influenced by this project... can someone help with that? do you think I'm doing something wrong linking the PC to the TV, or is it normal all that noise?? I used a RGB cable to link the PC to the TV, and I'm using premiere pro cs6 to edit... is there something I can do in the export settings to have a really good HD product once it is shown on TV, or on a big screen? Please help, I will be really grateful for any kind of answer :(

  14. I have recently been accepted to Ryerson film studies and Concordia for film production and I'm having a rather difficult time deciding. I'm curious which program is considered to be better than the other and what one program offers that the other does not. I need to accept one of them very soon, any insight is useful. Thank you
