  1. Greetings, I was recently given a Canon 514XL camera. I am familiar with still film in general but am not clear on how this camera works with various stocks and I have no manual. I know the cam works as I have run a roll of Tri-X through it and got it developed successfully. That being said I am not interested in taking black and white at this time. I am going to Las Vegas in January and want to get a couple cartidges of color film to shoot outdoors on the strip (during the day) as well as inside on various casino floors. I have been browsing the forums and it seems like Vision3 50D would be good for daylight/outdoor and possibly 200T or 500T for inside, but I am not sure as I have no experience with either. What is confusing me is how my particular camera will treat these films. I have been reading about needing an 85 filter for the T films, but I'm not sure if the 514XL has that built-in or not? I'm not even sure if the cam will support these cartridges due to the issue of setting the ASA correctly with the notches, etc. In addition, I've read on this forum that it might be better to just use the higher-ASA rated T films with a screw on filter instead of using two different stocks. As far as grain goes, I honeslty don't care. I like grain (within reason) and this is a personal project. It adds a certain character so reducing grain across lighting scenarios is not my primary goal. If it's clean, great. Light to moderate grain, great also. I am really hoping a nice gentle soul on this forum will offer some guidance to an amateur who is new to this area. I was going to post in the new user forum but this sub-forum seemed more approriate. Mods can move thread if necessary. Thanks!

  3. Hello- I have a Canon 814 xl-s and I will be shooting a darker, interior scene using Vision 3 500T. I understand the Canon 814 xl-s can accept and recognize films up to 400 ASA. I have further read that Kodak notches its 500T at 400ASA, so according to this, I will not need to use any kind of external light meter and can use the internal exposure meter. Wondering if anyone can verify this for me? Also, the Canon has a variable shutter and I would like to keep it at 220 because I feel it gives a sharper image, but have the ability to go to 150 if necessary. Thank you.

  5. I'm considering adding Super-8 (MAX8) camera hire to my small format transfer company's services. The cameras would be purchased from Pro8. What I would like to know from cinematographers is what equipment they would require in a rental package. The other question is wether UK customers would require crystal sync at 24, or 25 FPS. Any thoughts and advice will be much appreciated. Grant Bennett

  7. I've posted this scene description on several movie trivia sites as well as old movie forums and such and no one has been able to offer any information. I have an old childhood memory about a movie in which super 8 camera commercials were lampooned. I remember seeing images of this impressive looking super 8 camera that was called something like the "Hamshika Super 8". It was an impressive looking camera, kind of like a Bolex 160, if memory serves, but you saw people shooting with it and a low,husky , sexy female voice whispered the word "Capture!" all the way through the spoof commercial. The final shot in the spoof commercial scene was a crowd of people dropping their cameras en masse in a huge dumpster. I'll have to go back and look at it, but it may be a scene out of an old obscure comedy-sci fi called The Monitors, but I'm not sure. The era would be right, 1966-70 or so. Might be a British comedy, but not sure. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

  9. Hello there, I am a novice to the world of Super 8 film and have recently purchased two projectors. I have some questions relating to these projectors and hope someone out there might be interested in helping me out with a few things. Bell & Howell Autoload 461a Super 8 Projector While film appears to load and run through the projector as intended, the projected image is scattered and jittery to the point of not being able to make out what is being shown in the film. When the lever is switched to Still, the image is clear and clean and in focus. However, once switched back to Forward, the chaotic mess returns. Sears Easy-Load P222 and P223 Super 8 Projector The image shown is clean and in focus, but I’m confused about the way the reels are operating. The Reel Arm spins at a speed much faster than the projector processes the film, causing a big mess in little time. Also, the Rear Spindle doesn’t spin (is it supposed to?), so I’m having to manually wind the film after it’s moved through the projector. Any input or information on either of these projectors and the issues I’m having with them would be appreciated!   16. I am seeking some advice/input on the possibility of developing Super 8 Tri X film at home using the Caffenol C-H recipe. I am experienced in developing 35mm Tri-X Negative film (for still photos) using this recipe and have gotten results that I am happy with. I am looking to shoot some Tri-X Super 8 film which I know is reversal. Say I am only looking to get a negative, would my same process (wash, dev, stop, fix, rinse, wash, dry) for still 35mm Tri X work with Super 8? Will I get a useable negative? Could I stuff the film into my 20 oz developing tank that I use for my 35mm rolls? Or would I need to buy something a bit bigger? Thanks.
  17. Just bought a Canon 814 Auto Zoom from a German photography seller. Cleaned, well-maintained, reportedly testing and working with film. Just put the batteries in. Everything runs, but the fold-out hand grip, which contains 4 AA batteries, feels real hot. Is this normal?
  18. Hi, I recently bought some bulk super 8 film from Wittner and a reloadable super-8 cartridge. And when practicing loading with dead film, I'm struggling to get the super-8 to run smoothly through my camera, as Wittner cartridges does not come with the copper ring used to keep the film in place. I think they have replaced the copper ring with a clear plastic larger ring (seen in the photo, inside the cartridge on the right) that is suposed to keep the film (on the receiving side of the cartridge) in place some how? Here is a photo of everything supplied with the cartridge: Please could someone give me some advice on how to load these cartridges? I have seen some information on this forum about DIY reloadable cartridges but not the Wittner cartridges. I hope this makes sense, Thanks in advance. -Harry
  19. I recently purchased a reloadable super-8 cartridge from Wittner and I'm extremely confused about where to cut the ASA notch. I bought the CHROME 200D film which is Daylight: 200 and Tungsten: 50. Please could someone tell me where to cut the notches for this stock? Or somewhere said something about not needing notches for daylight film? Im very confused.   20. Howdy! New to these forums... So, i found an old Nemo C-200 Super 8 camera at an antique store for $60 and it looks like its in great condition. (even says so on the little tag) It comes with a bag, a box of Super 8 film, the battery holder... I had some questions though before purchasing it. 1.) Do they even make Super 8 film anymore? 2.) Does this particular camera also record sound or just video? 3.) Is it a difficult task to get whatever was filmed on Super 8 transferred to a Mac for editing? Thanks in advance for any info!! -Shane
  21. Some sample footage of the new Vision3 50D Super 8 from Kodak. This footage was lightly grain reduced using Neat Video noise reduction in Adobe Premiere Pro. Scanning by Spectra Film and Video on their Spirit HD Telecine, 1080p, graded scene-to-scene. Canon 1014 XL-S Some of the most interesting facts I've learned from these tests. 1.) The Spirit HD Telecine at Spectra is one of the sharpest, if not the sharpest, Super 8 scanner available. 2.) The Spirit HD Telecine, as is discussed at length on forums and other websites, does not handle jitter or registration very well. In fact, line-sensor-based scanners/telecines all seem to have this problem. You'll notice backgrounds flexing and stretching from time-to-time. This appears to be directly related to jitter frames. Although Bayer Pattern area sensors have many draw backs, my experience the last few years now tells me that they are better for Super 8. 3.) Neat Video noise reduction is fantastic, worth the money and works really well with Super 8 Ektachrome 100D reversal and Vision3 50D negative as well as most 16mm film stocks. But, don't bother using it with any other Super 8 negative films. The grain is just too extensive and large in 500T. The grain detector does not reduce the grain unless you turn up the grain size. But, this leeds to very obvious smudging. You can get it to reduce grain... but it quickly starts to look like an oil painting. You can even see it in this footage if you are looking for it. 4.) Go with flat scan if you have the time and resources to deal with DPX files and flat data. Graded scans are fantastic but no colorist is going to take the time to get it perfect because that takes hours. If you have the time and resources, grade your own scans and create your own video files from DPX image sequences. The best example from this test is the washed out background behind the second scene. The building and sky in these scenes can be pulled out quite a bit more with highlights masks and a pain-staking grading. I didn't rescan the whole thing, only rescanned a few frames on a flatbed scanner. But, there is way more detail in these highlights that were blown out during the grading of this scan. I'll try to post an example frame on the forums. If the highlights are blown out in your graded scan, you can't get them back without re-scanning. Only flat scans optimized to achieve Dmin and Dmax can give you it all. So, that's it for now. Please comment! Long live film, especially Kodak Vision3!

ARGH!!! :o Well, my colleague Andy only paid £109 GB Pounds plus shipping via eBay for a cosmetically fine Beaulieu 4008 ZM II but I also purchased a new cell, a grip/handle and charger at over £100 GBP. After shooting two test carts without any problems (other than feeling a little odd to hold it) the whole camera now seems to have seized up and yet it was sold as tested and fully functional. By all accounts, I'm looking at somewhere between £200 to £300 for a service/repair plus the shipping/customs charges on top of that. So I've asked the seller to kindly refund £50 (and I'll keep the two Tri-X carts that came with it) and then the Beaulieu can sit on the shelf as an expensive paperweight for now. I really do hope that the seller accepts this? I fully appreciate it was cheap to start with but I will push for a possible return and a full refund otherwise. As it's all so disappointing and I've already given Andy back his £123.45 in full. Am I being fair on the seller and will it even be worth even trying to get this Beaulieu fixed later on? Bill
