  3. What are people's thoughts on the Kinefinity Mavo Edge that was just announced recently? https://www.newsshooter.com/2020/04/27/kinefinity-mavo-edge-8k-internal-prores-raw-recording/ I've never seen a Kinefinity camera in the wild personally, but specs-wise this thing is just incredible. It's practically everything I've been asking manufacturers for, for years (and a number of cool things that would never have occurred to me): Unibody design (but still tiny) Internal NDs that allow for precision in exposure (so no big 2-3 stop jumps in density) this is a HUGE time saver All the Prores flavours/framerates + all the downsampling options you could want Internal scratch mic (for audio sync) A couple of different compression options for the raw recording Affordable media (though you'll want to stick with Samsung "PRO" NVMEs for the MLC Nand - to deal with continuous 8k recording) Integrated V-mount plate (so you're not having to worry about power cables as a point of failure/snag point) The added option of integrated BP-U batteries will be terrific for times you need to jam the camera on a car's dashboard (or similar tight spots) TRUE 12-bit 4k 4:4:4 RGB recording, downsampled from 8k (I'm pretty sure this is the first camera to ever offer this) Clear manual controls, and control screen (I don't know what Kinefinity menus are like, but if most of the essentials can be adjusted from the main screen, life should be fairly easy). True flexibility in sensor windowing and squeeze ratios (like the Mini LF), so that whatever image format, aspect ratio, lens type, anamorphic squeeze, or final deliverable you're working to - you can set it in camera, and don't have to rely on bringing in specific external monitors that have the controls you need. Good variable framerates Built-in power outputs, so you don't have to be adding additional power plates just to get your basic accessories running. Enough monitoring outputs to make life easy Dual Base ISO Two proprietary video outputs (for running a Kinefinity EVF and Monitor at the same time) - TAKE NOTE CANON! A "Lens" cable port at the front (which I'm hoping is going to be capable of powering FIZ motors (and not just conventional servo motors). This could allow for a SUPER-tidy camera build with RF-integrated motors like the Cforce Mini RF. A super-easy, super-flexible base lens mount, that can be adapted to basically anything you need/want Extremely fast sensor readout, for minimal jello skew. I keep trying to think of what else I'd want to add to a camera, or a physical build-layout that I'd prefer, and I keep coming up blank. 12G-SDI ports for 4k external monitoring would be nice (not that we have 4k monitors on-set very often), and an integrated EVF/Monitor like the Arri's new one for the Mini LF (so the operator can instantly move between the two) also comes to mind (and that's certainly an accessory that Kinefinity could build down the line). But that's about it. The camera simply sounds pretty much perfect for my needs. The one spec question I do still have is boot-up time. The Sony Venice and Canon C500ii (with their 4-5 second boot times) have really set the standard here. So I've got fingers-crossed the Edge can manage sub-10 seconds at least. Warranty repairs/support is a concern (I'm in Australia and I don't know what the Kinefinity situation is like down here). Image-wise, I've seen gorgeous stuff produced on the Mavo LF, so I suspect this will do fine on that front. The Mavo LF's highlights do seem to clip a little harshly, but that's about the only imaging concern I have at the moment, they seem to have found a really nice space for themselves in terms of their colour science. What an incredibly exciting camera. I no that no Producer is ever going to ask for it (which is a serious concern), but I can see this camera genuinely making my life on set easier (and allowing me to make my days faster). And that's a big deal. What do you think?

  6. Panavision, a world-class provider of state-of-the art optics, camera systems, lighting, filters, and post production services, will showcase an array of advancements in optics at their Lens Bar at EnergaCamerimage International Film Festival of Cinematography, which runs November 10-17 in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Panavision will also host a conversation with Camerimage Lifetime Achievement recipient Witold Sobocinski, PSC, and explore the benefits of an HDR workflow. Panavision’s workshops will be held on Nov. 13, beginning with the much-anticipated conversation with Sobocinski in the MCK at 11.00. The renowned cinematographer’s credits include “Frantic,” the Oscar®-nominated “The Promised Land,” “The Wedding,” and “O-Bi, O-Ba – The End of Civilization.” He will be joined by his grandsons Piotr Sobocinski Jr. (“Bogowie”) and Michal Sobocinski (“The Art of Loving”) who carry on the family’s cinematic legacy. At 14:00, Panavision will present “Cinematic Change: HDR for Cinematographers.” With 4K HDR as the viewing standard, Panavision experts will discuss how cinematographers can remain in control of their images throughout the workflow based on knowledge of the various post-production options. In the Opera Nova, Panavision’s popular Lens Bar will include demonstrations of the latest large-format and anamorphic lenses available, as well as previews of upcoming, innovative glass options: PanaSpeed – A large-format update of the classic Primo look. At T1.4, PanaSpeed are the fastest large-format lenses available today. T Series – A set of unique anamorphic glass that includes high contrast, well-balanced aberration control, excellent glare resistance, tightly controlled anamorphic squeeze ratio, and minimal breathing. H Series – A traditionally designed spherical lens set with a glamorous, rounded, soft roll-off, giving a pleasing tonal quality to the skin. Created with true vintage glass and coating, these lenses offer slightly elevated blacks for softer contrast. High speeds separate subject and background with a smooth edge transition, allowing subject to appear naturally placed within the depth of the image. Ultra Vista – Coming in 2019, this lens is a series of large-format anamorphic optics. Using a custom 1.6x squeeze, Ultra Vista covers the full height of the 8K sensor in the DXL and presents an ultra-widescreen 2.76:1 aspect ratio along with a classic elliptical bokeh and Panavision horizontal flare. Primo X - Also available in 2019, this lens will make its mark as the first cinema lens specially designed for use on drones and gimbals. They are fully sealed, weather proof, and counterbalanced to be aerodynamic, and able to easily maintain a proper center of gravity. Primo X lenses come in two primes – 14mm (T3.1) and 24mm (T1.6) – and one 24-70mm zoom (T2.8). Additionally, Panavision’s Millennium DXL2 8K camera will be on display for hands-on demonstrations. A premier, large-format imaging ecosystem, the DXL2 offers 16 stops of dynamic range with unmatched shadow detail, a native ISO setting of 1600, and 12-bit ProRes XQ up to 120 fps. At 10 pounds (4.5 kilos), it is the lightest large-format studio camera available, offering wireless controls, a directly editable workflow option (D2E), and Light Iron Color 2 (LiColor2), among other features. The DXL2 has become a top camera of choice for cinematographers and camera crews working on features, television, commercials and music videos. 17. WOODLAND HILLS, CA, (June 1, 2017) – Panavision will reveal advanced new tools for its unprecedented, large-format Millennium DXL 8K camera at their booth in Stage 2 (#S302) at Cine Gear Expo, June 2-3. Demonstrating the evolution of their innovative approach to filmmaking, Panavision will debut a set of fast, wirelessly controlled “Primo Artiste” lenses that cover the full 8K HDR image; the world’s first HDR OLED “Primo” Viewfinder; a new color spectrum filter called “PX-Pro”; and “DXL Control,” an iPhone app for remote camera control. These new technologies support Panavision’s Millennium DXL, which was engineered to offer superior creative control over the entire imaging chain. “The DXL was designed based on feedback from veteran filmmakers who wanted a large format digital system to serve their vision, and these new tools extend that level of innovation,” notes Panavision CEO Kim Snyder. “We are excited that the camera has been met with great enthusiasm for what it offers in terms of creative flexibility and progressive technology at the service of the artist.” Featuring Panavision’s premier large format optics and modular accessories, advanced 8K sensor technology from RED, and unique color science and workflow optimization from Light Iron, the Millennium DXL has been the camera of choice for numerous productions since becoming available in January. “Filmmakers have chosen the camera to shoot major motion pictures, commercials and TV shows,” says Panavision and Light Iron Senior Vice President of Innovation Michael Cioni. “We’ve been listening to filmmakers and developing top-notch capabilities for the camera, as well as fine-tuning what’s next for its ecosystem. These savvy tools continue our solution-focused efforts to deliver the best in class.” The Primo Viewfinder is the industry’s first HDR OLED viewfinder. Designed, engineered and manufactured at Panavision, the Primo Viewfinder offers Panavision optics and proprietary mechanics, an HDR OLED screen, 600-nit brightness, image smoothing, a heater, and custom Panavision glass to limit eye fatigue and make it easier to focus in very bright or dark environments. The viewfinder also boasts a theoretical contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. In creating the Primo Viewfinder, Panavision has made liberal use of customer feedback. “We have been extremely transparent with our trusted customers and shown them iterations along the way,” explains Cioni. “Their fingerprints go into this camera, because it’s their hands that touch the buttons.” Panavision will be showcasing a prototype of its PX-Pro color spectrum filter, which ushers in a significant increase in color separation and dramatically higher color precision. The filters provide an infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) cut that improves color clarity and reduces noise and IR contamination, which can corrupt or distort digitally captured images. “PX-Pro was custom made for DXL,” says Haluki Sadahiro, director of Panavision Electronics and Product Development. “It has been specially designed to allow for a wider range of precise color that supports all color palettes and flare characterizes of lenses new and old, while reducing many of the optical artifacts we see on digital cinema cameras.” The Primo Artiste lenses, available by the end of 2017, are a full series of T/1.8 Prime lenses, making them the fastest optics available for large format cinematography. The Artiste Series is an evolutionary step in large format optics design, becoming the second series of Panavision lenses to include a fully internalized motor and complete metadata compatibility. The essence of the Artiste concept is an innovative design that takes advantage of the aesthetic flexibility available within large format digital imagers, and the resulting look evokes a quality reminiscent of vintage optics. The series incorporates modern features such as focus breathing control, even field illumination and optimized close focus performance. “The primary goal of the Primo Artiste line is to balance the intricacies of aberration control and the art of lens design to create a lens that produces images that resonate with our instinct to relate to painterly images that are identified by smooth transitions between surrounding objects,” says Panavision VP Optical Engineer and Lens Strategy Dan Sasaki. An added feature of the Primo Artiste series is a true anamorphic glass attachment that retains the spherical nature of the base lens yet induces many of the artifacts associated with anamorphic photography such as directional flares and distorted bokeh. The Artiste lenses will initially come in eleven focal lengths (27mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, 65mm, 80mm, 100mm, 125mm, 150mm, 200mm, and 250mm) with expanded focal lengths available in 2018 New DXL Control software mirrors the camera menu system on the user’s Apple device, allowing wireless camera control. “It’s got all the familiar buttons and displays,” says Cioni, who notes the software is available now with a DXL camera rental, and will be available to download for free from the iTunes store starting June 2. Cine Gear attendees will also see the Millennium DXL in action on three live sets that show different lighting conditions, mounted with the Primo Artiste and the Panavision T Series anamorphic lenses. Also at the booth, Light Iron will have their unique post production solutions on display in a theater via an HDR Video Village Cart showcasing 8K HDR DXL footage. Light Iron representatives will be demonstrating how this system helps cinematographers evaluate their images simultaneously in high dynamic range and standard, or low, dynamic range. Having access to both image specs while in production enables cinematographers to better prepare for post-production color grading, given that distributors are frequently requiring both standard- and high-dynamic range deliverables. Light Iron colorists will also be on hand to discuss the finishing process as well as “Light Iron Color,” which is the custom color science built into the DXL. LEE Filters will be exhibiting their ProGlass Cine range of neutral-density filters. ProGlass Cine filters are designed to meet the exacting needs of all cinematographers — whether shooting digitally or on film. They are remarkably neutral, eliminating infrared pollution and ensuring all colors remain accurate and true. This simplifies workflow, saves time and enables cinematographers to focus on their creative goals. For more information on Panavision, visit www.panavision.com.
  18. RED Digital Cinema will bring its latest DSMC2 cameras to The Media Production Show, which takes place 13th and 14th June at the Olympia London (West Hall). 23. BURBANK, Calif. (March 10, 2015) - FotoKem's restoration of Twentieth Century Fox's The Sound of Music will kick off the sixth annual TCM Classic Film Festival on March 26 in Hollywood. Originally released in 1965, the re-mastered version of this cinematic treasure will grace the screen of the TCL Chinese Theater IMAX as the fest's Opening Night Film, as previously announced by TCM. The movie's stars - Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer - will be on hand to introduce the film, along with Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne. Directed by Robert Wise and photographed by Ted D. McCord, ASC, The Sound of Music earned five Oscars® for Best Picture, Director, Sound, Editing and Score. The Rodgers & Hammerstein musical tells the true story of a nun (Andrews) who leaves the convent to serve as governess at the nearby Von Trapp household, where she falls in love with Captain Von Trapp (Plummer) and the family encounters dangers and eventual triumph in Nazi-era Austria. This marks the second consecutive year that a movie restored by FotoKem has opened the TCM Classic Film Festival. Last year, Twentieth Century Fox's Oklahoma! was unveiled for attendees. FotoKem completed the restoration of both 65mm classics through 8K scans from large-format film elements, down-sampled to 4K for restoration and digital cinema mastering. "The popularity of The Sound of Music is in part a testament to the power of 65mm capture," says Schawn Belston, Executive Vice President, Media and Library Services at Twentieth Century Fox, who supervised the restoration. "FotoKem's 8K scanning and complimentary digital post resulted in a stunning digital version of this timeless classic, and made our new 4K restorations of The Sound of Music and Oklahoma! a perfect fit for the opening night screening slot at a festival as prestigious as TCM's." FotoKem, which provides digital workflow and creative finishing solutions, and continues to operate one of the last motion picture laboratories in the United States, has been providing skillful restoration and preservation services for decades. Their expertise in the entire post production process makes the facility uniquely positioned to restore and deliver 65mm sourced images to today's audiences. "We're honored to have been entrusted with the job of digitizing and restoring the The Sound of Music," says FotoKem's Andrew Oran. "This 50-year-old film comes alive today in a whole new way - with a vividness and emotional impact that arguably exceeds even its original release - because of its 65mm pedigree, and the great care we've taken throughout the post process to honor that unique, ultra-high quality source." For the restoration of The Sound of Music, Oran and his team began by creating the highest quality 65mm intermediate film components possible on the facility's re-engineered 65mm contact printers. Next, those film elements were digitized at 8K on the 65mm IMAGICA scanner. FotoKem colorist Mark Griffith mastered the film from re-scaled 4K files, utilizing powerful digital tools to address quality issues present in the sourced material, such as flicker and variable color fading. "At FotoKem, we employ many of these same restoration tools and techniques on 65mm originated images week in and week out for new Hollywood features, giant screen documentaries, and theme park attractions," adds Oran. "Working with 65mm requires precision, whether the images are new or old. Whatever the vintage, we consider it our duty to retain the intentions of the original filmmakers." FotoKem is a sponsor of the 2015 TCM Classic Film Festival, which runs March 26-29. The golden anniversary of the film's premiere launched March 2 in the UK, and March 10 in the U.S. with the release of the 5-disc Ultimate Collector's Edition 50th Anniversary Blu-ray/DVD/Digital HD, which features over 13 hours of bonus content. Additionally, through a Fox partnership with Fathom Events and Turner Classic Movies, the restored film will also be shown for two days only, April 19 and 22, in over 500 theatres across the U.S. For more information about FotoKem, visit www.fotokem.com. 24. From the new Red Shark article about the Sony F65: "The 20 megapixels quoted actually refer to the number of photosites on the sensor itself. Interpolation then allows us to increase the number of output pixels for 8K to 33 megapixels." So it's not actually an 8k sensor, and it doesn't actually record in 8k, am I right in thinking that means the camera isn't actually 8k then? Dunno, I'm still trying to work out where the holes are in this "3perf" camera! Sometimes I wish companies had more confidence in their products, theres certainly a fair percentage of the people who have shot on the F65 who have loved the images, can't the products stand for themselves? (Probably a very naive thing to be thinking but this kind of stuff does seem really silly) Freya
