  1. Hi guys, im new here, and i'd like some advice. I own a Canon 6d + 24-105mm, and i'm going to shoot a music video for a hip hop/trap artist. I've only shot a hardcore punk music video, and it was very fast paced and with several cuts. This time it seems to be different. Upon searching references, such as Post Malone, Travis Scott, etc, most, if not all videos rely heavily on slow motion scenes. Even the song the artist sent me is much calmer and sort of romatic than the others. But since the 6d can't shoot faster than 30fps at 1080p (if can with magic lantern, but the tests i made didn't turn up so good), i'm looking for alteranatives, and i strongly believe that the lack of resources boosts creativity and this might just allow me to create something different (I'm thinking different cuts, camera movements, etc) For instance, the artist want a scene with a woman in a white wolf mask at the beach at nightfall, kind of abstract, symbolic. And unfortunetely i can only thing of this in slow motion, but i'm sure it's just that i can find the right inspiration. I've been searching for movie scenes and music videos that could inspire me to have more ideas, and honestly i feel like slow motion is overrated and overused these days in music videos, so i'd like to move away from that but still keep this sort of poetic, emotional, abstract feel. Could you guys share some videos, scenes, thoughts, techniques and ideas that could work in a more symbolic and meatphorical scenario? I'll keep reading the forum and searching for more inspiration, but on google it's hard to find anything that DOESN'T involve slow motion when i search this subject. Thanks in advance! Cassiano.

  3. Shooting on Cannon 7D, 24 fps, 50th shutter speed. The scene is the subject lit only by a pulsating strobe light. What is the easiest/ most affordable solution to sync the strobe with camera and avoid flicker, banding etc.? If possible, I'd like to have various speeds of the strobe for dramatic build. Any recommendation on brand/type of strobe? Will be using house power. Shoot is in Los Angeles. Thanks!
  4. The main up-side to the DSLR is that it is small & light & so any paraphernalia (steady cam, jib, slider etc.) designed for DSLRs will be a lot cheaper than for bigger heavier camcorders. The JVC GY-LS300 seems like a pretty small, light camcorder. Is it small & light enough for cheap equipment usually reserved for DSLRs?

I did my first attempt at directing a music video for an english songwriter in France. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vL-DjKGCmEY I shot with a Canon 600D in the forest and mostly shot everything at 50fps to do some slow motion since I thought it would go right with the song. Also played the song at a high speed so that in postproduction the singer would be singing at the right tempo but with everything else in slow motion. Besides the shots from the story, I made my guy sing in a close up, in a mid shot from below, and also filmed the guitar in a close up
  6. Would someone please share tips on working with Magic Bullet Looks? I usually start with my primary color-correction—balancing my Luma scopes, RGB parade and vectorscope in Final Cut Pro X—but would like to grade in Magic Bullet Looks. Does it make sense to do my primary CC *at all* beforehand if I know I’m going to use Magic Bullet Looks for grading afterward? Some people say, when using MBL, you should wait to dial in your scopes as the last step. Thanks for your thoughts!

Is there a way to get a "clear scan" on the A7S camera? Thanks!   10. Hello- I am opening this question up to the pros because I am shooting a film with the Sony A7s and I planned to use the these TV simulation LED flickering lights.   11. Hey there. In my day job I regularly shoot from gimbal stabilizers and aerial rigs using dslr and mirrorless cameras and lenses. Given that I do not often have access to a wireless follow focus, I have to improvise and work with hyperfocal distances and such. The one piece of information that would be really usefull to me when planning shoots where we will be hiring in this sort of gear never seems to be available in any review or spec sheet. That is the distance beyond which the lens has infinite focus. I can usually take a rough guess with fixed primes, but with compact zooms it's a completely mixed bag. I often resort to google image searches and taking a guess based on the lens markings, but some newer lenses have no focus markings at all. For instance on an upcoming shoot using a Sony a7rii we are considering using a Ziess Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70mm F4 ZA. The lens has no focus markings and I can find no spec sheet anywhere that tells me even approximately at what distance this lens achieves infinite focus. This information would be really useful to me. I know that by using hyperfocal distances I am to some extent negating this issue and always achieving the maximum possible field of sharp focus in any given situation, but it seems like this info should be available as a matter of principle. Does anybody know where this spec might be available for modern lenses? Thanks

I might be shooting my first low budget feature film as DOP, I'm so excited about it, I won't get paid but the expenses, but I think it's alright as I finally get the chance to work on a first feature. The director owns a Nikon D7200 and wants to use it for the shooting, and I can't make him change his mind. It shoots 4:2:0 8bit internally, so I suggested him to work with an external recorder like the Atomos Ninja 2 to record ProRes and 4:2:0. My question is if anyone has some experience with this camera, I'd love to hear, I believe you can always learn so much from everyone and from people's feedback and experiences, so I wonder if anyone has some experience to share using the D7200 (and maybe with an external recorder). thank you a lot :) also, I know the Atomos Ninja 2 records at full HD, 4:2:2 10bit, but I read if you pair it with the D7200 you can record 4:2:2 8bits. So my question is, is the internal 8bit of the camera a limitation cos you can't go higher even if your external record allows you to? or you can actually shoot with the Ninja 2 and D7200 in 10bit? (it's a general question on any camera paired with ext recorder) thank you guys!

  14. Sometimes when you shoot you want to underexpose a scene. The problem with Dslr is the great amount of noise in the shadows when exposure is not perfect, and other little problems. What's your workflow with this? Thanks to all that answer...
  15. My first ever short film just released, my first time being a cinematographer. Shot on a single Canon 550D (T2i) DSLR with most shots using a Canon 50mm f1.8 lens at f5.6 and some wide shots using the Canon 18-55mm f3.5 at f5.6. Lighting wise, I used 3 800 watt tungsten halogen red heads and 1 5600k LED on some medium-close up shots. I cut out shapes to use as cookies and shape the light with some flags. It was a zero budget film, all locations were due to good contacts in the local area. I'm no expert, never went to film school or anything, I just need some opinions from the masters. The critics seem to praise the cinematography more than the actual film but obviously there isn't much reason as to why other than that it looks pleasing to them and not look like a amateurly done flick. We're all young filmmakers aged 18-21, trying to do what we love doing in our spare time whilst having days jobs to pay the bills. Main film IMDB Featurette Website

  17. I'm thinking about buying a camera at the end of the year. I've been assessing what I can afford and what's available. So far, I've narrowed it down to either the Panasonic GH4 or the Sony A7s. I like the GH4's native ability to shoot 4k but I'm concerned about the 4/3" sensor size. I'm impressed with the Sony A7s' shooting capability especially in low light but disappointed that shooting 4k requires an expensive peripheral. I'd appreciate any advice, opinions and first hand intel anyone can give me. If there's another camera system that anyone would recommend, by all means. Mind you I cannot afford anything that's over $5000. Thanks.

In this review of the Kamerar QV-1 LCD Viewfinder, the reviewer comments on the strong magnet holding the finder to the mounting bracket and demonstrating it by holding the DSLR downwards on the loupe only - LINK. I wonder, is that magnet somehow affecting the LCD screen? Temporarily or maybe over time causing some damage? Didn't some users of s35 adapters for video cameras (remember those? :) ) attach magnet on screen or the viewfinder to un-flip the image? Best Igor

Currently we need some cinematographers who use DSLR and/or CSC cameras. We especially need CSC users. If you have friends that could also participate please share this information. It will be a 2 hour Focus Group Discussion and if you take part we will compensate your time by $150. A focus group discussion is where we invite a group of people to talk about their experiences with a certain product, in this case ILCs. We would like to speak to you to find out how we can improve upon our products. However, there are a few criteria that you must meet to take part: • Owner and user of an ILC DSLR or CSC; • Aged between 25-50; • Must own at least 2 lenses for main system (excluding bundle/kit lenses); • Must have purchased a lens within the last 2 years.   20. Looking for advice on how to program controlled focus and zoom on a Canon 70D, though open to suggestions on other DSLRs and HD cameras. I want to program the camera to zoom in from a wide shot to a close up very slowly for 15 mins, stay on the close up for a few minutes then zoom back to the wide shot again in 15 mins, remaining always in focus. This is not for a time-lapse, it will be a continuous shot. Is it possible to do this with a DSLR? What kind of equipment would I need? Would love to hear from someone who has done something like this!

  22. I'll be shooting soon a short film (as DP), and I only have a small amount of choices in term of which camera I can use. I was wondering if anyone has personal experience to share as for how these cameras work in a low key light system, which of these cameras render the black at the best, with which one we can play with sort of gamma settings so as we can get a good latitude? I also have the opportunity to work with Panasonic AF101, but I don't like codec so much beside the fact it crashes the highlights very quickly and can't go beyond 2 stops 2 stops and a half in the blacks, so I was wondering if actually opt to shot with a DSLR. Any ideas? What about how each of them react in a low light situation, if I have to compare these cameras? CANON 5D Mark3 SONY A7s AF101 thank you so much!
  23. I've became really passionate with Cinema in the past 3 years, and before that I was already passionate about photography, for about 6/7 years now. And so I've decided that I'd like to experiment on this journey of filmmaking since it's something I quite enjoy doing and am currently studying. There's a lot of independet DSLR filmmakers now which is amazing. And so I've decided to buy a new camera! From my previous experience with photography, I'm more of a Canon fan since I first started with the classic Canon AE-1. I don't really have a big budget, but I'd like to invest in something that has quality and is worth the price, and that will be able to last me a couple of years until something greater comes along or I am able to afford a better one. Since I am between photography and filmmaking, I was looking for a camera with both. Or would it be better to just invest in a filmmaking camera? (I own a Canon 1000D for photography, but it doesn't capture video.) And if I do go for a DSLR with both photography and video, I thought about Canon 70D, since I can't afford a Canon 5D and I think it might be a little out of my league yet. So please, I'd appreciate some opinions if possible! :)
  24. for sale or trade is my lovely Century Optics 16:9 adapter. It is a front mount 1.33x squeeze anamorphot that is quite sharp. It has a 58mm rear thread which make is useful with dslrs and cameras like the blackmagic cinema camera for shooting true 2.35 cinema-scope image when use with a 16:9 sensor. No cropping, use the entire sensor for maximum resolution. It also comes with a clamp on sun shade that has a series 9 filter mount in the front. Also included are six diopters for shooting close ups. With this adapter, you loose some of the minimum focus you previously had, so these diopters get that back making sharp focus with in five feet possible. It does vignette at wider angle on different cameras, so you have to test. Keep in mind though, that with the increased field of view width wise, you don' t need to have as wide a lens as you do when shooting spherical. Here are some pictures, video samples to follow. Asking 950 US for the lot. It is in excellent condition and creates beautiful blue flares. I am also willing to trade plus cash for a Panasonic LA-2700 anamorphic adapter. It's size and rear thread better suit my needs.
