  1. Hey all, I pretty much just want to get this film in front of strangers. Tell me what you think! I am an iterative type of person, wherein I will go into the next project with what I learned. Here is what I can tell you about this project: Shot in Portland, Oregon - Dec. 2023, Final cut: Feb 2024 I shot this film on an Eclair ACL 2 (and an ACL 1 for B-Roll) using Kodak 500T 16mm Film. I shot 900 feet of film, which comes to exactly 25 minutes and 32 seconds (at 24fps). I sent the film to "The Negative Space," by Nicki Coyle, to be processed and scanned in 4k. The filming was spaced out over 3 days - All of Vincent's lines were in one session; a week later, we shot all of the Dean's lines. The following Saturday, we shot the creepy basement scene. For sound, I used a TASCAM DR-40x with an Audio-Technica AT875R Microphone. The whole setup worked really great, with a wider angle microphone I think the sound of the camera would've been a problem, though you can still here the shutter in some moments, I tried to mask it with room tone added in post. I edited the project in Davinci Resolve with some visual effects in Blender, Photoshop, and After Effects. The Painting was made in Photoshop. I took pictures of DeAndre (Vincent). Similarly, I positioned him to "Not to be Reproduced" by René Magritte (ironic, I know). Then, using Generative Fill, I filtered the image with the prompt: "Abstract Oil Painting" to get the final look. I motion-tracked and often rotoscoped in the final PNG in After Effects, which is difficult when working with 16mm film. I learned a lot with this project from a directing and writing standpoint. My two biggest takeaways are: 1.) I cannot simultaneously operate a camera and direct the actors. I need to hire a Camera Operator next time! 2.) At least one whole page of dialogue didn't make the final cut. This was okay because the dialogue was motivated to have the same end. This means I could cut out a large portion of dialogue to make the interview part more succinct without losing any crucial story points since everything they discussed pointed to the Painting. It was nice to have different dialogue options to intercut, so it worked out in the end. Please let me know what you think!
  2. Hello All, I just completed a new short film shot on 16MM Kodak film via an Arri SR3 HS. I wrote and directed this fun little horror short, and my producing partner, and friend, Evan Samaras did the cinematography (say hi in the comments, Evan). Not only did Evan and I work behind the camera, but also in front of it. The short features only two characters played by us. Due to COVID-19, we wanted to make something small with a minimal, to non-existent, cast and crew. We have submitted the film to some festivals so, for the time being, it is only up privately with a password on our Vimeo page. The link and password are below, for your viewing pleasure. Please let me know your thoughts and critiques. Anything feedback would be greatly appreciated. Password: SRF2020 Thank you all in advance! Keep shooting!
  3. I’m looking for a set designer and editor for my short film. I’m shooting a horror short film. I reside in Massachusetts. I’m looking for a video editor and set designer.
  4. Hey everybody! As newcomer to the film, I released my first short film "The Whistle" two years ago. The short film hits the 500k clicks relatively quickly. I invested another year to write a story and create a second part. At the end of 2018, I shot the second part of the "The Whistle" series. Even this already counts 700k clicks on Youtube and became thus a worthy successor. In January, my latest low-budget project has started: "THE WHISTLE 3 | MARIA". It was a big challenge for me and my friends. A lot of time flowed into the post-processing because I wanted to create a completely new world and jump back to the year 1870. I took a big step forward and would like to present the result I really hope you like it: BTW: I created a VFX Breakdown to this horror short film to show what's behind my low budget production:
  5. How is this look basically achieved and how can it be reproduced with low budget modern lights today? Probably a simple question there. Did the cinematographer basically use lights with blue gels placed outside windows for the cooler look and use basic tungsten lights for the warm look? Thanks in advance!
  6. Hi! I am currently doing preproduction for a music video. It’s a horror themed music video set to reggae music. Half of the music video takes place at night. There’s a campsite scene with a bonfire and the rest of the night scenes are at the woods where the band members are exploring a creepy dark forest and eventually chased by a monster. I would like to ask for suggestions on how to light certain scenes and shots :) I did a lot of research on lighting ideas for bonfire set ups and moonlight set ups and there are various ways to do them but I’m not sure which style can work with the limited gear I have. We’re shooting with a Sony A7SII and prime lenses. Here is my lighting gear: 1x1 Led Light Bi color with softbox and grid (2) - can be battery operated 1x1 led light (medium sized) (2) - can be battery operated Led Worklight Portable led light - battery operated 1 small portable led light 85 watt daylight bulb with china ball Aputure 120D with light dome and spacelight attachments 25 W Beam video led light (2) - can be battery operated Par light (Rgbw, 3watts, 50 bulbs per par) (3) Smoke machine CTBs, CTOs, 201s, ND gel 5 in 1 reflector 2 large styrofoam Basically the first part of the night scenes is the campsite with bonfire setup. The 5 member band will be sitting by the bonfire which will be the main key light with moonlight at the side and the back. I might enhance the closeups with a led light with CTO or orange gel with fake flickering in front of them. I’m not to sure how to do the moonlight at their back. The location looks like this: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s220/sh/e16f1721-016c-4b60-b861-897d38b96610/df4c80b550b51b84/res/e580c050-7fe8-4689-bed6-941e661c1dc8/IMG_3633.JPG?resizeSmall&width=832 https://www.evernote.com/shard/s220/sh/e16f1721-016c-4b60-b861-897d38b96610/df4c80b550b51b84/res/798ed9ff-3ccb-410b-b3d2-5210c7456409/IMG_3644.JPG?resizeSmall&width=832 My reference for the lighting is this: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s220/sh/41a66133-af8f-4c3e-bc43-791b9e62e158/a876e3da84ed4205/res/fd34993a-240b-4a3a-8dbb-8b4b33986807/Screen%20Shot%202018-08-31%20at%2011.07.12%20PM.png?resizeSmall&width=832 https://www.evernote.com/shard/s220/sh/41a66133-af8f-4c3e-bc43-791b9e62e158/a876e3da84ed4205/res/548aaec8-cd69-494f-a98e-448968cf5bd8/Screen%20Shot%202018-08-31%20at%2011.07.29%20PM.png?resizeSmall&width=832 https://www.evernote.com/shard/s220/sh/41a66133-af8f-4c3e-bc43-791b9e62e158/a876e3da84ed4205/res/a80eaa04-48ba-4bff-b8fa-b287b1826070/39498786-bonfire-wallpapers.png?resizeSmall&width=832 The second part of the night scenes is the band exploring the dark creepy woods with their flashlight and emergency lights. So I’m thinking of having them use strong flashlight so I can bounce the flashlight light with a styrofoam back into their faces while the camera is front of them. And when the camera is from their POV, the strong light of the flashlight would be enough to light the trees (with a focused beam of course) or I can use the the portable beam lights to fake the flashlight light. I haven’t decided yet if the light will only be the flashlight cos I’m thinking I want some faint moonlight in the surroundings as well but I don’t know if it will work. The coverage for these scenes would be medium of them. They are huddled together as they walk so the light will be only concentrated on them. Then there will be pov or OTS shot of them of each other when they face one another. The location for these scenes are: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s220/sh/e16f1721-016c-4b60-b861-897d38b96610/df4c80b550b51b84/res/084ad3b5-5f8c-476f-aa03-cd9934ffde1c/IMG_3668.JPG?resizeSmall&width=832 https://www.evernote.com/shard/s220/sh/e16f1721-016c-4b60-b861-897d38b96610/df4c80b550b51b84/res/349e07d2-a51d-45c0-872d-73bd68d126de/IMG_3684.JPG?resizeSmall&width=832 or this: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s220/sh/e16f1721-016c-4b60-b861-897d38b96610/df4c80b550b51b84/res/b7766052-b010-4099-a16b-da1179e064d8/IMG_3756.JPG?resizeSmall&width=832 My reference for the lighting is: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s220/sh/41a66133-af8f-4c3e-bc43-791b9e62e158/a876e3da84ed4205/res/5f842be8-f57b-4c04-8f28-1a274e5c1907/Screen%20Shot%202018-08-03%20at%209.43.45%20PM.png?resizeSmall&width=832 The Ritual https://www.evernote.com/shard/s220/sh/41a66133-af8f-4c3e-bc43-791b9e62e158/a876e3da84ed4205/res/38e19281-d4ef-4fa8-a1ec-78a46d341da4/Screen%20Shot%202018-08-12%20at%209.12.24%20PM.png?resizeSmall&width=832 https://www.evernote.com/shard/s220/sh/41a66133-af8f-4c3e-bc43-791b9e62e158/a876e3da84ed4205/res/53e363e0-3517-47cf-8c8e-3d663dc50599/Screen%20Shot%202018-08-17%20at%2012.26.26%20AM.png?resizeSmall&width=832 The third part would be the two last remaining characters dropping their flashlights so the key light would be the moonlight now. The monster (a bloodied haggard-looking woman) would slowly appear to them. The moonlight would be more “visible” or stronger at this point. The last remaining person would run down a hill. I would shoot a shot where the camera peeks through the trees as he runs down. It might be also important to note that the person last standing is half-black. I am planning to have our makeup artist put shimmery makeup on him so the light would reflect his skin. 9. I need some suggestions on how to light up this scene. (This scene will take place during nighttime) We will have some wide shots and a Over-the -shoulder shot between the receptionist (who will be sitting) and the guest. We want it to be warm and inviting. Maybe add more lamps? Blue gels to fake moonlight? Im sorry I took these during daytime. Wide Reception Area - The main area We have access to some dedo lights,LED,Arri (300,800) and KinoFlos (4 Banks) I really want to thank you in advance. :)

  11. If you got a couple of minutes to spare, check out our new short horror film: "Death in C Minor" This is one of our first attempts at a short film horror film. Shot with the Sony A7s and the Rokinon Cine 35mm and 50mm Lenses. We weren't too satisfied with some of our lighting and camera work (among other things). We want to improve our craft, so let us know what you think -- good, bad, and ugly. Thanks, Jason R
  12. Hello everyone! I'm new to cinematography.com, to introduce myself quickly, I'm a French aspiring Filmmaker, located in south of France, if some of you would like to see what I do, you can, here : www.damienkazan.com (not here to promote anything it's just that I know usually we have to introduce ourselves on forums before posting...) I have a question about some lightning from "The Conjuring", the living room, desk, lightning, I was wondering how they lit that living room, looks like it is 90% lit by those lamps we can see on screen, does anyone know how to achieve a similar lightning please ? Thanks a lot!
  13. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPgZVTFzG3I --This's the link to a short 16mm film I did back in 2005, shot on bolex. I think it turned out pretty good, despite the choppy editing and a few -out-of-focus shots. Let me know what you think :)
  14. Hey guys! I'm new here but glad I found this forum. My new to filmmaking in general but have always had a passion for film especially in the realm of horror. Just recently, I took a risk and just did my first short horror film. I recently completed a little 2 minute short for a contest with Chiller TV. I didn't win...but I got out of my comfort zone and took a risk. I LOVED IT, though I told myself I should just give up and quit. I realized after feedback from multiple people, my story for this short was very weak. Hard to follow. Putting myself out there with all my mistakes but wanted to share it with you guys and get your thoughts in it. This was shot with a Canon 1100d and edited with Final Cut Pro: https://vimeo.com/95459742 -Brandon
  15. My name is Max Normandin, and I've ALWAYS wanted to become a filmmaker. The problem is, I suffer from panick attacks and a pretty severe case of social phobia. I don't get out of my house often, and I certainly don't surround myself with people. Which makes it pretty darn hard to make movies... This is the story of how I went ahead a shot a 25min short film all by myself, with no crew, using family members as actors. I don't know if this is unusual or not, but I think the quality of the final product, given the very limited ressources I had, might be uncommon.
  16. I recently put up an interview with the cinematographer of the horror film You're Next - Andrew Palermo - on my blog Deep Fried Movies. The movie - which is still in theaters - was shot on a Red One MX with Zeiss Ultra Primes back in the early months of 2011. It's not an American Cinematographer Magazine-level of technical detail, but I thinks its specific enough about the craft that some of you folks might find it worthwhile. There aren't really that many sources for DP interviews out there and I'm hoping to add many more to the blog. Check it out here.
  17. My latest Horror Comedy Short is online! Enjoy and please share if you like! Thanks for watching! Ruan (twitter: @ruanlotter)
