  1. Hey everyone! Hope you're all well I just wanted to share our latest short film 'RISE', which I shot last year in the mountains of Snowdonia, UK - vimeo.com/674155543 Within the unforgiving environment, the walls of a Welsh quarry provide a climber with the physical and mental strength to prevent a functional neurological disorder from defining who she is, but also to find solace and reconnection through the act of climbing. Captured on the SONY VENICE with Leitz Summicron-C Set Lenses. If you get a spare moment, I would love to know what you think. Many thanks really appreciate it! - Lee
  2. Hi cinematographers I’m a guy from germany/switzerland who loves films. So I started out making them in June. This is my third project as a one-man-filmcrew, armed with just an iPhone and some basic filmmaking-tools to learn the craft. My only actress was my girlfriend who supports me whole-heartedly. My goal is to find a way to break into the industry independently or start my own career as a self employed film- and/or video-creator. I'm not 20 anymore, so film school would be no real option for me, especially here in germany were taste seem to be poor and the film schools are pretty rigid systems. So to make up for the lack of mentors, my hopes lie on the internetz – and I wanted to ask you for some honest feedback about my latest work. Because while I think this film works, I’m not really satisfied. I just can’t put my finger on what it is exactly. I would very much appreciate every feedback you are able to give regarding the cinematography, editing, story, sound etc. - of this film. Thanks in advance!

You already threw me this grad party! I mean what else could I need?” Dad “ Well, you will be going off to college so..” Brent “Not until next year. I'm taking a year off remember??” Dad “ Yes I know” Mom pulls a bag from behind her back all excited. A smile forms on both of there faces. Mom “And what better way to take a year off than..” Brent opens the bag and sees a car key Brent “A new car!? Mom “Well, not new. It's used but it will get you where you need to go” Brent Gives a big bear hug to both of his parents Brent “Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. April feels horrible and has a great plan to make him happy. April “ Brent, I have a great idea that will make it up to you. But I have to go plan it out. I'll call you tonight. April (on the phone) “Our trip! You did want to spend the year together right? Doing a whole bunch of things? Why not do all those things this summer? April “Packed your bag? Brent “ Yes! Everything is packed! Come on just get in the car already!” April ( stepping into a car with a map ) I'm being prepared! We have a long way to go Brent We do? You still haven't told me where we are going. April Ya, its surprise trip. You drive. I'll tell you the way Brent and April look at each other with a smile. Brent Ok so where to? The camera goes into an extreme wide shot of a car pulling out of the driveway and driving down the road. Music plays and the camera switches to a drone shot of car driving. Shots of brent and April are being shown of them laughing and talking and playing in the car. Scenes go buy of brent and April stopping at places and having fun. Places include the beach, the snow, a picnic, star gazing, nature walking, eating at restaurants, getting snowcones, going to a concert, a campfire guitar session, and fireworks. Ext. fade to black Int, right before dawn. April is sleeping and the car is shaking a lot. You hear the car park. Brent. “Babe.. babe wake up” April “What? Aw, what time is it? where are we? Brent “Come on” April staggers out of the car to see 2 chairs set out for her and brent overlooking the sunrise. April “ wait what is this? I didn't plan this..” Brent “I know. I did. They both sit down and look out into the distance Brent “I did this because. I'm sorry I overreacted about you leaving. To be honest I'm so happy for you I just don't know what I`m going to do while you are gone. I will miss you so much. I'm not even ready to go to college. I'm sure you`re going to have a great time. April “Wow, I had no idea I meant that much to you. Thank you. I'll call you every night. “ Brent grabs April's hand and lays his head on hers. Brent “I love you. you goofball’ A short pause April “I love you more” They look at each other for a moment April “ So? Where to next? Fade to black Credits roll with pictures of them at all the spots they went to
  4. Hi guys Long time reader, first-time poster on the forum. Recently shot a short film, you can see here: https://vimeo.com/322197103 Would love some feedback. For context, I shot it as a one-man band, on Alexa Mini with Zeiss Superspeeds and glimmer glass. A lot of neg fill, 2 x astra litepanels and 1 x litepanels gemini.
  5. Hi all, I'm going to be shooting a short film in the very near future on the Sony FS5. The Camera only comes with a kit lens, so I was wondering whether it was worth sourcing another lens to work with. I know friend's have pretty pricey Canon lenses, but I'm unsure whether these would be better or worse. The film is going to be shot mostly outside on location, shots of buildings and streets etc. If anyone has ideas, let me know. Thanks.
  6. This is the first part of a shot movie I´m working. I got to stop for job, part II coming soon. I hope you like it.

Its unlisted so I can enter it in film festivals. Tell me what you guys think. Its like 90% done because I have to clean up some audio. Its my first film I've done and Im excited about it! The actors in the short are first time actors. BTW it has a 80's music theme.
  9. Hi everyone, I have written/directed a short film last year and as I'm approaching the production of my new short film, I would like to hear some experts options about the look of my film. This was a one-man-crew project and therefore I didn't have the resources/time to hire a DP at the time and I would like to hear some opinions of how can I improve my visual storytelling skills. I am aware of many of the errors I have made in my short but I'm not going to bring up my point of view as I would much prefer to hear some "fresh" observations. Thanks in advance for taking the time to analyze this. PS: feel free to comment on anything about this short but I'm mostly interested in hearing opinions about: cinematography and coverage(if that's a separate category at all). Thank you, MH Password is: 11112222
  10. Ok, more than ONE question, I admit! :) I am a VERY beginning filmmaker who has not an iota of filmmaking and directing experience. Yet I have the dream of creating this huge, complex, well-polished independent short film using motion picture film and professional movie cameras. I am tempted to laugh at myself and say to myself, "Dude! You have no experience! Snap into reality and realize: you will not make this film and make it how you want it, without some type of filmmaking, directing, and cinematography experience." I am sure that is true and so.... I have no video camera except a cheap phone that has barely any memory on it so that is not an option. I do not have the money to buy a DSLR with video capabilities that I could use, either. BUT, I do have a Super 8 camera that someone gave me. So I figure, why not work with what I've got?! So, for any people out there who have made, or like to make, Super 8 films, what would be the best quality, least-grainy super 8 film out there? I would want it to be as clear and as close as possibly to standard 35 or 16mm as I can get, color-wise as well. I am guessing that the only way to do cuts is in-camera, correct? My camera has a tripod mount which I think is AWESOME, as I will definitely be using it! I am wanting also to do slow motion and time-lapse with the film, which leads me to my main question! Am I correct in guessing I would have to do that post-filming, using an optical printer?
  11. Hey all, I have been able to create a reel based on a few short narrative films I have acted as DP for. Please let me know what you think, I would appreciate any advice.
  12. Hi everybody! One of my biggest fears on set is to fry camera accessories because of misunderstanding of voltage etc etc. I know that some accessories like TV logic need 12 volts while other like follow focus motors etc need 24 volts. What I do not understand is how do I know which voltahe is the correct for each accessories and what's the voltage of each power port (If I'm not wrong RS ports are 24v while Dtap is 12-18). Is there any rule of thumbs or does anybody have a more defines explanations that goes beyond my knowledge of the topic? My understanding of electricity is pretty basic too. Thank you in advance for the help!
  13. Hello everyone, I am a fine arts student living in Paris, France and I am about to embark on my second short film journey. I need your help to solidify my idea, to get that punch line that shapes the film so that the rest may unravel. My theme is "Traces". This can usually be taken into so many directions but the one I think would be interesting is body traces. Such as skid marks on your knee as a child playing soccer; to a teenager getting a hickey, to a person battling depression and cutting themselves, to a man nicking himself shaving, to a woman having a red cheek from getting slapped by her abusive husband, etc... I want to try to stay away from cliches though; and I envision it building up to a big ending. A lot of artsy films I've seen that have to timeline and just move are interesting, but at some point you feel like "okay I get it" and you turn it off before its finished. That's not what i want my audience to feel. I want my audience to be compelled to watch till the end. And that's what I'm having trouble with; finding that punch line. If you can lend me your beautiful minds to try to help me achieve this, i would really appreciate it. PS: if you feel you have a better idea related to my theme other than body traces, please share! All your ideas are valuable to the process. Thank you so much! Carole Dana
  14. Hello everyone, I am a fine arts student living in Paris, France and I am about to embark on my second short film journey. I need your help to solidify my idea, to get that punch line that shapes the film so that the rest may unravel. The theme of the movie is TRACES. I've chosen to select a few phobias that are related to the subject, which could make for an interesting plot. Here is what i got: - Ablutophobia (fear of washing or bathing) - Athazagoraphobia (fear of forgetting or being forgotten) - Haphephobia (fear of being touched) - Rhytophobia (fear of getting wrinkles) - Philemophobia (fear of kissing) I would love to hear what you guys think about this. The film cannot be more than 15 minutes. So just choose one and share your plot ideas! Or if you would want to share on more than one thats great too. If you know any other interesting phobias which you think might be relevant please share too. Thank you so much! Carole Dana

  18. Hello all, While I was composing music for my short film, I came across an interesting song that I eventually covered with an acoustic guitar. I was so amazed by how great my cover sounds and fits into my film, that I would like to keep it; however, the original song is copyrighted... So my question is, could I implement my cover to the score of the film? A few things to note: -I will be submitting this film to various film festivals -I did not sing any of the original lyrics (nor any lyrics at all, for that matter), I simply strung a guitar to the same tune as the song -If this helps any, the song I covered was "El Condor Pasa" by Simon & Garfunkel Thanks guys, John
  19. So one day I was bored and I decided to shoot a film all by myself, which meant acting and I'm not that good at it
  20. Yo guys, could you tell me what you think? These were shot with no budget - The Hymnal - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APQFgRIX3yM Shot with Canon 60d, basic photo lights + diff & neg Only Child - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1IJka9piWk&feature=youtu.be Shot with CAnon60d, tungsten builders lights + small LED + diff + neg Obviously they're not perfect, but I shot them to get something made :) I was going for Eraserhead btw :)
  21. We shot some key pieces of this short film using super 8mm. It was pretty seamless but helped add to the effect that you were watching someones real home movies: http://redd.it/34bi0f
  22. Hey, My name's Francesco, I'm an artist and music composer currently working in London. I've been reading this forum for a year now, always been a fan of cinematography and lightning even if I work in a totally different branch in the film industry. I have a window of time this February and March and since I'm looking to expand my IMDB credits, I'd like to do a small pro bono work in exchange of a music composer credit. So if you're a director and your short movie is now in the editing process, consider taking five minutes and listen to some of my tracks to see if my style suits your work. http://bit.ly/147mjKT You can send a private streaming link and contact me here: info [at] francescoberta.com Many thanks Francesco Berta http://francescoberta.com
  23. Hello, everyone. I am a high school student and wanted some feedback on the first real short film I've made. I know that the 'found footage' idea is a bit overused, but I wanted to come up with a more unique and practical approach to it. It's two minutes long. If you decide to watch it, feel free to give me honest criticism! Thanks! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWCNt8DffOU
  24. Hey all, I am currently looking for a DP well versed in 35mm scope photography for my next short film "Secrets of Aperture." "Secrets of Aperture" was funded earlier this year through Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/colinandconnor/portal-secrets-of-aperture-webseries We are set on shooting 35mm anamorphic, and are aspiring for a fully optical workflow, including a print. I have been perusing this forum for a long time now, and found it a fantastic resource for learning about film. Always planned on hiring a DP through here as opposed to Mandy or elsewhere. We have no exact shoot dates but are looking at some time in mid-end of February. The job is decently paid, but will be determined later. If you are interested would love to hear from you. Please send demo reels to colinandconnor "at" gmail.com or message me through here. Thanks everyone!
