  1. Hello my fellow cinematographers and filmmakers! I got a question to be clarified ASAP since I'm going on a shoot and in need of the answer =) I understand that Red camera has this issue where the crop factor is different as I change shooting with 4K to 2K. The crop will go from a APS-C size sensor area to a super 16 size sensor area. The camera is only using a certain part of the sensor as it records the set resolution. So the field of view of a 25mm on at 4K will be similar to that is of a super 35 but once it's changed to 2K then the crop makes the lens into a 80mm equivalent (math may not be exact, but you get the point). It’s troubling since the lenses will not have the same effect as different resolution is used. So I’m just wondering if Arri Amira/Alex has the same issue? Is the total area of the sensor (super 35 equivalent) going to be used as I change from shooting with 4K to 2K and 1080p? Does it also have this crop problem as Red? Simply put, if I use a 25mm on Amira shooting at 4K and then I change the resolution to 2K, then field of view of both should be exactly the same? Thanks so much for taking the time to answer this! 2. Recently shot a project with a set of Standard Speeds on an ARRI Amira. The focal length that gave me really bad vignetting was the 32mm. The 20mm, 28mm, and 40mm didn't give me any issues. The 32mm was originally a B mount that had a converter for PL mount. Its a temporary converter. My guess is that's the culprit. Curious, has anyone here encountered this with that particular focal length? Or any issues using the original B mounts with converters? I'm hoping that if I change the mount that this problem will go away, but my fear is that its the design of the rear element. I remember renting a set a few months back and seeing a few focal lengths show a slight sign of vignetting. But this 32mm was horrible.

  7. So I was watching some clips from Nigella Lawson’s most recent cooking show, At My Table, which aired on BBC Two in the UK, and I’m kind of torn between it looking gorgeous and there being just too much bokeh. Sometimes it felt like there was just too much of it and that the field of sharp focus was just too small. There could be, I think, a limit after which it’s just to painful for the eyes to watch. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09d980t/clips These clips are probably only visible for those in the UK. Perhaps these YouTube ones might work – YouTube will suggest other clips from the show: The cinematography was handled by Robin Fox, just as it was in the previous show, He seems like such a great guy in this little video about how Simply Nigella was shot and lit: http://www.newsshooter.com/2016/06/21/sheffield-doc-fest-2016-robin-fox-on-shooting-and-lighting-simply-nigella/ (When I was watching him speak, I was reminded of Prince William: they both seem to have this particular way of shaping their lips when talking. Don’t know if that’s something that a certain [tiny] part of the UK population do.) EDIT: Oh, no! How does this happen?! Somehow part of the title got clipped off: the title should be “Is there such a thing as ‘too much bokeh’”?
  8. Shot this one a few hours out of Sydney. Got some great sunrises, Amira + Leicas handled everything superb. We wanted a sharp, natural look that wasn't overly graded or stylized. What do you guys think?

  13. Hello friends and fellow cinematographers, Not sure if anyone have posted about this topic but here it goes... Other than being able to shoot RAW from the Alexa, practically and to-the-eyes and after all the proper post correction and all, is there a huge difference between raw from Alexa and the proress 4444 XQ from the Amira? I'm sure there is a difference, but is the difference too great or are most people just being an unconscious pixel-peepers? I feel much of the discussion have put too much attention and emphasize on this issues and on the argument of which is 'truely' cinematic or fitting for cinematic use and I just want to get a simple answer once and for all. Thanks! Dave
  14. I'm really excited to let you know about a new project I've just set up, Manned Camera Limited. http://mannedcamera.com I have been making amateur films for a number of years, and aspire to becoming a professional cinematographer in time. With that in mind, a little while ago I gave up my day job and began making corporate videos (usually about power-kiting in one form or another - one of my other passions). The corporate work paid a few bills, but the trouble was that I was working in a vacuum, and felt that I never really had many opportunities to gain experience in the areas that really excited me (narrative fiction in particular). Coming to this industry quite late in life, having had another career, I don't really have time to begin as a runner and work upwards from there, so I've been thinking about a way of getting as much experience as I can, as quickly as I can. "Manned Camera" is how I've decided to do it! I sat down and made a list of the equipment I felt I needed, to make my own films, and then got in touch with my local camera and grip rental company (Decode in SW London), to find out if they would be interested in using my equipment as part of their rental fleet when I wasn't using it. Just the other day I finally took delivery of everything, including an Arri AMIRA and set of Zeiss Super Speeds (MK2), among other things. Decode will be looking after my equipment when I'm not using it, but when it's with me I'll be using it to make make my own films. The other thing I'll be doing, and this is what might be of interest to other people, is offering my equipment at significantly reduced rental rates for projects where I can accompany the equipment, and either assist or shadow an experienced DP. I'm particularly keen to gain experience in lighting for narrative fiction, and so if you have a project for which you need equipment, and you're happy for me to either help out, or shadow your cinematographer, please don't hesitate to contact me. I'd be delighted to hear from you! Please have a look at my Manned Camera website for details of the equipment I have available, and my personal website to see some of the things I've produced so far (none of it with the AMIRA, as I've only had it a week)! Wish me luck!
