  1. Hey guys, I’ve a question on Davinci and the way its waveform deals with the blacks. I’m grading a project aimed for the big screen, I set my level to data (and data level also for export), did all my grading, but notice the blacks stay around 128 on my waveform and when I try to lower them and crush them toward 0 the picture just get way too dark. I don’t have any broadcast safe line active and such things. Is that due to the fact my computer display in 8bits? so the moment I try to lower the blacks, I just get super blacks? So if I export this graded version and play it on my computer, it looks all good, with nice blacks and all, but my question is: what happen when the film is screened to a festival, is the screen 10bit? for which my black all of a sudden will be milky? I read a lot about this topic but everyone has different opinion as for the workflow to follow and so on, I’d be more than happy if anyone gives me some insight on the matter :) Thank you!   2. I'll be shooting soon a short film (as DP), and I only have a small amount of choices in term of which camera I can use. I was wondering if anyone has personal experience to share as for how these cameras work in a low key light system, which of these cameras render the black at the best, with which one we can play with sort of gamma settings so as we can get a good latitude? I also have the opportunity to work with Panasonic AF101, but I don't like codec so much beside the fact it crashes the highlights very quickly and can't go beyond 2 stops 2 stops and a half in the blacks, so I was wondering if actually opt to shot with a DSLR. Any ideas? What about how each of them react in a low light situation, if I have to compare these cameras? CANON 5D Mark3 SONY A7s AF101 thank you so much!
  3. I have been having an issue when color grading lately with the C300. After the grade, most blacks that are below 40 IRE seem to be artifacting like crazy on youtube. Whereas I don't see this from other people's work. Ive tried these encode settings in adobe media encoder, Quicktime MOV, h264 55'000 kbps 1920 x 818 Quicktime MOV, h264 35'000 kbps 1920 x 818 Quicktime MOV, h264 25'000 kbps 1920 x 818 Quicktime MOV, Prores 444 1920 x 818 But all of them just aren't cutting it and I dont know what I'm missing. My blacks are generally not brought down to 0 because the director wants a low contrasty look and some scenes were shot very dimly with only one LED to light the scene. On the other hand, we've lit darker scenes with several 1k's and Litepanel LEDs and while the highlights and midtones held up the blacks still artifacted hard.
