  1. Minimal Camera Crew for independent productions Not long ago, I wrapped an independent feature that was shot in Morocco with a DoP I had already worked for on two more movies. From the very first contact with the production company, it was quite clear that it was a low budget movie, therefore it was mandatory to squeeze the most out of every single euro in order to make the shooting possible according to the schedule, without the need to do extra hours and such. As usual, I advised the director of photography on the gear list, try to get everything I considered necessary and making a separate list of devices and accessories that could be considered dispensable, hoping that finally the production company would come to an agreement with the rental house. Since the prep time had been very short, there was a lot of information about the shooting I wasn’t aware of, and now that I came back I would like to share what I've learned from this experience. Speaking about gear and accessories, I realized that there are some of them that are wrongly considered “fancy”, while it’s precisely in low budget productions when they become more handy and/or essential.   2. Hi all, I'm a Los Angeles based indie DP, union gaffer & lighting technician (IATSE Local 728). I'm on the cusp of putting some of my lighting technician work behind me and going full time freelance as an indi cinematographer and commercial gaffer. I've been in LA for nearly 10 years, and while I love what I do, I don't know that I see myself living in Los Angeles long term. Atlanta has become a strong contender as a place to relocate to and continue to work in the industry. I'm curious if any folks on this forum can speak to the independent film scene in Atlanta. Obviously major studios film in ATL, but I'm talking about independent features with budgets of a couple hundred thousands to a couple million, not Marvel movies. Can you speak to the numbers of indi films that originate in Atlanta, as opposed to LA producers and directors that simply seek out Georgia as a location because of advantageous tax credits and take their DPs with them? I'm trying to see if an independent and commercial DP career could advance and continue with residency in Georgia. Thank you in advance for any insight. Mike

  4. Hello fellow filmmakers! I have been editing in premier and color grading in davinci resolve. Ive actually enjoyed the process more than I thought I would but am curious how to achieve certain moods and tonws. I love the memory type of colors we get in call me by your name during the grass scene how might I achieve that? Overall the film has a very blue tone so how might you suggest I grade more romantic scenes, sad scenes, neutral scenes? Lastly, I have had trouble transferring slow motion from premier to resolve any advice? Thanks so much! Tyrone
  5. I mixing audio for a party scene inside of a house but having some trouble making the atmosphere seem believable. I have party-goer noise, dialogue, feet, but im unsure how to balance the music? Which frequencies should I remove/enhance for the music/dialogue?
  6. I'm very excited to share this piece I DP'ed a year ago, we all had great time with this one. I'm very interested in learning, so all feedback and insights are welcome. Cheers! I Need My Space is a humorous tale of infidelity, frustration, and ultimately adventure. The story is focused upon the life of elderly engineer, Esko and his unfaithful and nagging wife Tarja. Looking for an escape from a life that is an unsatisfactory mix of dull and painful, Esko decides to build his own rocket ship and blast himself into space. The award-winning independent film was shot over the course of 4 days and with a budget of only €1200. The film will be released for public viewing on June 21st, 2017.

The show stars Directors, Cinematographers, Production Designers, Music Supervisors & Actors and features all the other talented people who make movies. Dream Makers starts online then adds cable TV broadcast and finally adds movie theaters across America for the show finale’. Each episode—hosted by Roger Rohatgi—features the contestants’ pitches, tasks unique to the movie industry that have to be completed by a certain deadline and stories about the personal journey about how they got to where they are today. Our judges will give their opinion about who they think are best suited to be on the team but the audience has the last say as to who gets to stay on the show and make it to the Dream Makers movie making team. Open audition sign ups run through the end of December 2013. After the contestants sign up they will make pitch videos about themselves to show why they should be on the show. Once the audition pitch videos are evaluated, the semi-finalists will be notified within a few days whether or not they will be included on the show. During January of 2014 our judges will select contestants from the nationwide audition process to compete for the movie making positions. 20 semi- finalists will be chosen in January. Then 10 contestants from each category will be announced in February. These contestants will compete for the one position in their category to become part of the Dream Maker Movie Team. When the television broadcast phase starts, Dream Makers will announce the top 5 Directors. These directors will then work with the remaining contestants everyday for the rest of the season. They will provide their opinions, insights, and advice to help the rest of the contestants make the team. Each week contestants will make a pitch video about how they would apply their craft to develop a section of a screenplay. The judges will give their professional opinion about who made the best pitch, but the audience will select their favorite contestants in each category.
