Halation effect by soft diffusion filter

Hello,

I am shooting a Super16 short flim next month and director wants some halation effect on highlights (Hopefully, rims and practicals.) So I suggested to use Classic Soft 1/2 which was mentioned a few months ago somewhere in the forum. However, the director does not want the softened images. Is it possible to get Halation effects through Classic Soft not softening the whole image? I was thinking of pushing one stop or doing skip bleach to increase the contrast to sharpen up the softened image. Or should I just leave it and do these contrast control in the post? We are using 7218 and finishing on tape.

Thank you for your help in advance!

All diffusion softens images. Your best bet is increasing the brightness of the small areas you want to halate and then use lighter grade diffusion. Halation results from the combination of intensely overexposed areas and some sort of light-scattering filter.
