DP Show Reel

Recommended Posts

I am just starting to put together my reel.

I have half a dozen music videos, some shorts and I am just finishing up a feature.

Do most reels only have footage that makes it into the final cut? Can/Should I use footage from the feature that may not make it into the final cut?

What is the standard on this issue?

Directors & editors have much different reasons for using specific shots or takes in their finished narrative films than DP's have for their non-narrative, no dialog reels. It really has nothing to do w/ the "quality" of a shot. An actor gives a great look in a take in which you don't like the framing, so that one stays in the movie. If you've got the dailies, use the take that looks good.

i dont see anything wrong including a shot thats not used in the final cut. Its often a case, with longer shots, that the editor wants to keep the pace up.

That 30second establishing dolly shot looks stunning but the audience wants to get to the talent
