Matt Workman
I am just starting to put together my reel. I have half a dozen music videos, some shorts and I am just finishing up a feature. Do most reels only have footage that makes it into the final cut? Can/Should I use footage from the feature that may not make it into the final cut? What is the standard on this issue? Daniel Nemchek
It all depends on why its cut in the first place, generally if it's not good enough to be in the film you should save the space for the ones that were.
Jon Rosenbloom
Directors & editors have much different reasons for using specific shots or takes in their finished narrative films than DP's have for their non-narrative, no dialog reels. It really has nothing to do w/ the "quality" of a shot. An actor gives a great look in a take in which you don't like the framing, so that one stays in the movie. If you've got the dailies, use the take that looks good.
Premium Member Brad Grimmett Posted July 17, 2006 Premium Member Share Posted July 17, 2006 I don't see any problem with using a different take or a longer version of a take for your reel. The hard part is actually getting the footage that you want to use.
Premium Member Adam White Posted July 18, 2006 Premium Member Share Posted July 18, 2006 i dont see anything wrong including a shot thats not used in the final cut. Its often a case, with longer shots, that the editor wants to keep the pace up. That 30second establishing dolly shot looks stunning but the audience wants to get to the talent
