NEED FEEDBACK: New music video shot with HVX and PS Technik

"Swallow Your Fears" by rockers State of Man, directed by Xandy Smith, produced by Adam Bush. Shot completely on an HVX200 with a PS Technik 35mm adapter and a set of Zeiss speedprimes. We also used follow focus and a matte box. For camera support we used a super pee wee dolly, an EZ FX jib, and good ol' fashioned hand held. We had a robust lighting package, we lit it as though we were shooting film.

We also shot a behind the scenes documentary of this music video shoot using a DVX100. That will be ready to view sometime next week.

I am interested to see your behind-the-scenes stuff. Care to share your lighting setups for the different scenes? You really got some beautiful stuff there.

Those Zeiss lenses really make that rockout scene don't they? The last MV I shot had a couple of 9 lights in the background and the Nikon lenses we had created flares everywhere. It worked, mostly because its all we had, but its good to see such clean shots with the lights in the shot.

I really like seeing the richness of the blacks in the house INT setups.

By the way, your first link in Post #3 wasn't working for me. Is it working on your end?

The actual 20 minute full length Behind the Scenes documentary will be completed and posted by the end of next week.

Hi Adam,

I too look forward to checking out the behind the scenes and agree with Paul on all that he said. If Mike gets a chance to share his lighting set-up that would be awesome, i'd be interested in hearing about his INT scenes.

This is the director here. I can't be as specific as Mike the DP, but the interiors were primarily lit with Kinos. I think he had a 9 light outside the windows in the bar and the house, and made some use of a 1200 HMI, too (thrown in the doorway at the pawnshop for example). He used gels to introduce a tinge of green on some lights and we also punched a sharp red accent light into several shots in the bar. We used a hazer in almost every sequence, but in a few of the layered and split screen effects shots, the disipation of the smoke was an issue (thanks to the ability to play back the takes instantly, we were able to correct those problems). The performance scene was lit with two 9 lights and two Dynos with a bunch of pars peppered in and a couple of pars with diffusion for fill on the close-ups.

We expect to post the behind the scenes video the end of this week. In the meantime, since this music video, we shot a TV commercial in LA, also with an HVX200, this time with a Red Rock M2 and a set of Nikons. We had to shoot run and gun (no permits) and we ended up with a 2:08 long promo version, a :60 spot and a :30 spot. This commercial is also the work of Director Xandy Smith.
