I didn't know this was common any more, but polyester base is thinner, so you can fit more on a standard spool, or get 500' in a 400' mag.

Some Microfilm is on such a thin base it comes 215 feet on what we would call a 100 ft spool. (for some reason Microfilm comes on plastic spools, and they have the ofset drive holes like in Fuji Movie spools. - I have used a microfilm spool as a take up in a movie camera)

Microfilm normaly comes without perfs.

I have used some special order motion picture film that was thin base polyester. It would fit 200 feet on a reg. 100ft daylight spool. Gave me twice the running time, much easier not to have to change rolls as often. You do have to check to see if the camera you are using is safe for running polyester based film. Some cameras can handle it and some would be risky, also some high-speed cameras are made for using polyester based stocks.
