I think he is one of the best Cinematographers I have ever seen.

Tarkovsky is also great even though he is more of a director but you can get yo ass he knows his camera too.

Any takers on these 2?

tarkofsky was a genius, unfortunately he's dead now (cancer, i believe). in fact he directed portions of his last film, "the sacrifice" from a mobile hospital bed. i don't know if he knew a lot about the camera from a technical perspective, but he definately knew what he wanted to see, as his film are each visual masterpieces and he worked with at least four cinematographers that i know of, including sven nykvist. among his many talents are his brilliant camera moves, to which i suggest paying special attention. if you haven't seen "andrei rublev" or "mirror" drop whatever you're doing and buy, don't rent, the dvd's.

I think he had a very good technical sense as a director.

Watch the DVD's by all means, but don't miss the films in 35mm prints.

definately! and if you like him check out theo angelopoulos. "ulysees gaze" is available on DVD, and my favorite film of all time is "landscape in the mist".
