Importing MiniDV HD using a DV cam

I do video processing for some clients. One client is buying the Sony HDR.

 

Is it possible for me to import his video into my computer using my Panasonic DV953 (MiniDV format)? Or do I also need Sony's camera to import it?

 

I'm assuming that to automatically convert from HD to DV that I need the Sony camera for downsampling, but I was wondering if I could import the HD video directly. I use Sony Vegas Video 5.0 by the way.

that's not as stupid a question as one might think, but alas you can't. the tape is the same, the tape speed is the same, the data rate is the same, i think even the track width is the same. it's just the data itself that's different but it still doesn't work. a little like a hard drive that would only let you store quicktimes, no avi's, or word documents and no plain text. ;-)
