Premium Member Greg Gross Posted August 27, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted August 27, 2004 Canon used to be Nikon(if you know your photo history)the lenses are superb. Much better lens than DX100A has. Canon was formed by a group of people who broke off from Nikon to do their own thing. Please before you buy read "Digital Film Making-2ND Edition" by Scott Billups concerning DX100A,page 64. I'm going to do some serious thinking about XL2 and I want to look at it and shoot with it. You can not believe how many people I've seen or heard ask, how do I make my DX100A shoot look like cinema? Please look at the camera you want and try it out, shoot with it! I think I can safely say the XL2 will have a fine manual focus! For me I am either going to get XL1S or XL2 after trying them out. Five blocks from my house there is a huge video/media supplier. I used their in house DX100 for a full day and was not happy with it. I went out with my sound man and shot everything you can think of. I use a DVTEC shoulder rest with my PD- 170 and shoot very comforatably with it. I don't expect the PD-170 to pro- duce a film look(not reason I bought it) I would have bought PD150 but could not find good price on new ones and could find no used ones(I won- why?). I'm just trying to shoot the very best mini-dv I can and I'm enjoying it. I really want to look at the XL2 as a second camera. I've had cameras that I did'nt like (terrible! sort of like driving a car and not being able to see the spedometer through the wheel). XL1 is in book too(per above). Premium Member Greg Gross Posted August 27, 2004 Author Premium Member Share Posted August 27, 2004 Please note correction to my last post! I was referring to model DX-100 The DX100A may have new focus ring, I do not know.
Premium Member Rich Steel Posted August 28, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted August 28, 2004 Interested to know why you invested in a sony PD170? instead of an XL1 or DVX100?
Premium Member Greg Gross Posted August 29, 2004 Author Premium Member Share Posted August 29, 2004 Hello Rich, and sure: I really wanted to get PD-150 but could not get good price new and no used ones were available. I want to shoot the best mini-dv that I can and its a personal project with me. I'm not interested in shooting for video transfer to film or the film/cinema look. Maybe some day that bug will bite me but not yet. I shoot on mini-dv and also dvcam. Please listen closely to what I say! I Do Not Think That The DX100 or DX100A Is A Bad Camera. There was one heck of a massive advertisement cam- paign with it and I'm not sure if some people really understood the camera. If you have time go to the ASC website(www.theasc.com) look up the test- ing they did and they did some great things with it. No doubt its proved itself! I'm 56 yrs old now and for tweny years I've been a professional photographer. Rich,I am really fussy about glass(lenses)! I personally do not like the glass on the DX100 and I spent a whole day working the camera back in March. I personally do not like the manual focus on the DX100. I do not like the sound quality and a "big"! panasonic dealer told me he does'nt like it either. My sound man and I do a lot of shooting with a boom mike in one channel and a lavalier in the other channel and we are very happy with PD-170. We tested it a whole day before I ever bought it. I have to have a camera with dependable focus. I want to test Canon XL2(for 2nd camera due its glass). Happy Shooting!!!!!!!
