There is a toggle switch on and old 35 arri that says "cont", or "var". which should I shoot to acheive 24fps? The motor sounds a lot faster on var.???

Since no one is answering, my guess is that "cont" is constant speed (24 fps, but not crystal-sync) and "var" is variable speed -- you should have a way of adjusting the speed, with a tachometer to tell you what speed you are shooting at.

That sounds right to me, since the "var" makes the motor run faster. There must also be some controller for variable speed, which is currently set faster.

Which model camera is this?

true :

cont is only 24 or 25 fps, you should have another adjustment switch in the back

then varri is every speed between 6 and 120 for an arri 3 for exemple.

so if you set var at 24 you'll have the same result with const at 24

but var works with a verry sensible wheel so if you want to work a 24 choose always const.
