Guest Posted October 8, 2007 Share Posted October 8, 2007 Greetings all, If you love watching commercials then I thought you might like to check out these four spots I just finished for Canada's Primo/Unico foods: Link provided when they go to air. These are national spots that will begin airing across Canada in about two weeks, we even did French versions! My movie went over budget so I had to whore myself out as a commercials director/DOP, yes I feel unclean I showered for a week :D Production notes, shot on the 435, stock was all Fuji Eterna 250T. There where several forum members on the four day shoot. Stephen Whitehead, 1st AC Kar-Wai Ing, 2nd AC Stepan Sivko, gaffer Michael Armstrong, PA/gaffer assistant Stephen Williams, technical consultant, from Switzerland. I should also like to point out that I was DP for three of the four days, then I brought in Steve Danyluk, CSC, to shoot and light day four. Awesome work from him! Otherwise I was my usual director/DP/operator combo, really must pack that in. The work I had to put into these spots was just incredible. I spent weeks on the casting, all non-union, mostly friends and family of the agency and client. I also edited the spots, which was another month of revisions etc with the client. These projects are good money but my hourly rate was probably $1.33 hr by the time I was done. The over all concepts are not mine of course, the agency did that. But I added my own special touches, flying tomatoes, giant rotating cans, and a few other non-boarded shots that made the final edit. Here also are a few production pics, just look at that "happy" family as I give them direction. If you're in Southern Ontario and you want to join me on one of my half assed shooting adventures, make sure I have your resume. Oh yes of course, those details :) Only filter was the 85 when using 250T with HMI, and windows. Two lenses, Zeiss ultra prime 24mm and 85mm. Lighting was I think two 10K HMIs, two-three 10K tungsten, and a bunch of smaller stuff. Stepan Sivko would know better than me it was his companies truck. I just said gimme this and this, and it was there, a luxury I didn't have on the movie. Certainly a lot more gear and crew than I had on Dark Reprieve. Does it show? You can tell because as a result of my ever expanding gut, my director's glass goes off to one side :D Why would you be surprised that I had an outside DOP for only one day? I'm a qualified DOP, didn't you read David Mullen's review of my feature film? Having a DOP is quite luxurious though, I could get used to it. It's something that kind of interests me, actually. That along with glassware lighting like you see in liquor and beer commercials, and car lighting. They're all pretty specialized arts. I know a few people who specialize in food and car commercials and get paid very well for it. The one thing I've seen the most when just looking at food commercials and videos and back lighting.. not sure why but I always see food back lit. Brings out the texture and shapes throws the shadows towards camera. I've also wondered about shampoo commercials, do they always use strobes in the shower to get the water like it is..
