Open Communication to Phantom HD/65 Customers:

In an ongoing effort to continuously improve our digital high-speed cameras, Vision Research will occasionally offer updates or upgrades to our existing products. An update is a product modification that offers new features or performance improvements that are provided at no charge to existing customers because they are considered essential to the promised capabilities of the camera system. Upgrades are significant improvements to the camera system beyond what was originally advertised, demonstrated, and promised. Upgrades are usually provided for a fee.

There are several updates and upgrades currently available for the Phantom HD and Phantom 65 Digital Cinema Cameras:

Updates:

? We have just released a software update that you can download from our web site. Be sure to download version 650 if you are an HD or 65 user. It provides a number of new features and is required for Phantom CineMag support.

? Any camera shipped prior to November 1st, 2007 needs to be sent to VRI for a firmware update to add CineMag compatibility.

? An improved PL mount is now available. Cameras delivered before 1 September 2007 can be sent in for a free updated lens mount.

? We have also introduced an Optical Low-Pass Filter (OLPF) upgrade for the Phantom HD camera. The OLPF will filter out high-frequency optical content, making the image look slightly ?softer? while reducing color interpolation artifacts such as ?rainbows?, ?sparkles? and ?zippering? as well as the moire artifact on series or fine lines. The OLPF upgrade adds a filter carrier to the camera that allows you to add or remove the OLPF, depending upon the look you are seeking and the shooting conditions. While this is classified as an upgrade, we are providing it at no charge to existing customers and will add the OLPF capability, upon request, when a camera is returned for the CineMag firmware or other updates.

Anyone under warranty or with a service contract can return their camera to VRI for cleaning, testing, and updates to any internal components in currently shipping cameras that have changed since original shipment of the camera, including those listed above, as well as the most up-to-date firmware.

Upgrades:

Vision Research recently improved the imaging sensors used in the Phantom HD and Phantom 65. These new ?Rev B? sensors provide better color and higher MTF than the Rev A sensors. The Rev B sensors have been installed in a selected few cameras so that we could get feedback from the broadest possible audience and the most applications. The reviews are very positive, so we plan to begin shipping all new camera orders with Rev B sensors beginning February 1, 2008.

Cameras delivered between now and February 1, 2008 ? whether they are from existing orders or new orders ? will be delivered with Rev A sensors and upgraded at no cost to Rev B sensors when they become available in quantity.

Existing Phantom HD or 65 customers that took delivery before November 1st, 2007 can upgrade to a Rev B sensor for a modest upgrade fee of $5,000. This upgrade will be available after February 1, 2008.

On February 1, 2008 the list price of all models of the Phantom HD and Phantom 65 cameras will increase by $5000 to cover the higher cost of the new sensor. However, any cameras ordered up to that date will receive current pricing and the Rev B sensor at no additional charge.
