Antonio
Hi! I have made some experimental films and animation with my Scoopic M. Now I have project, where I might need different lenses and perhaps 400 ft mag. I have considered two options, Arri 16S, arri 16M or Bolex EL. The question is: Is it easy to get time lapse/animation motors for arri cameras?I assume that Bolex EL has single frame function. Is there any other options wich I should take under consideration? With Thanks Antonio
Sam Wells
Hi Antonio, I'd love to sell you my Arri S but really, I'd go with a Bolex: Focal plane shutter, single frame capability built in. (The Arri's mirror shutter only design is fine for continuous action, but has the potential for adjacent frame fogging issues in single frame --- plus single rotation of the motor shaft does not give an even # of frames -----) Don't know about aftermarket motors for the EL so I don't know if any issues with these: http://www.norrisfilmproducts.com/bolex/index.html http://www.tobincinemasystems.com/page13.html Does the EL NOT have a single frame shaft ??? (I can't remember) Actually a Rex 5 with one of the above motors should work well for you. Or Rex 4 (do you really need the 400' mag ?) -Sam (now shooting single frame etc with Nikon digital)
Premium Member John Sprung Posted January 23, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted January 23, 2008 Definitely the Bolex. They were designed to do both continuous motion and single frame. The heavy mirror shutter of the Arri acts as a flywheel, which is a good thing for continuous motion, but a disadvantage for single frame start-stop. -- J.S. Edgar Dubrovskiy
I would say Bolex.
John Stanhope
I would say using a Bolex H16 with a Tobin TTL motor and Some Kodak 7248 stock (100T) nice slow film, for animation.
Premium Member Tim Carroll Posted January 24, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted January 24, 2008 Antonio, I'm a huge Arriflex 16S and 16M fan, but I must agree with the above. For stop motion and animation, the Bolex is the camera I would choose over the Arriflex. -Tim
Antonio
Hi, Thank you everyone for your answers! I have been thinking that the Bolex would suit for my projects better, so now I am starting to look one. Thank you once again! Antonio
