America, stupidity and the world

So my girlfriend fwd'd this link to me:

Now, is this a spoof? Is this a real Aussie show? I am afraid it could very well be. :(

If so, is this video/ spoof ethical because it shows only what the filmmakers left in, not what they edited out? Could it be that Americans are so smart and wordly that the film crew had to traverse the US and conduct thousands upon thousands of interviews to be able to come up with these (stupid) responses?

These filmmakers risk being sent to Gitmo for their audacity, portraying Americans as stupid!!! :P

Let's hear it.

This looks like a rip off of a Canadian show called "Talking To Americans." The premise was for the reporter to present Americans with ridiculous facts and stories about Canada which the Americans would believe hook line and sinker.

Notable Americans on the show where Governor Mike Hukabee, yes the guy who ran for president, Huckabee was on the show wishing Canadians luck in preserving their national igloo that was melting. There was of course no national melting igloo, but Huckabee was sure there was.

In another segment the reporter asked newly elected George Bush if he was looking forward to meeting Canadian Prime Minister Jean Poutine. Bush said he was, but no such person exists named Jean Poutine.

And so on and so forth....yes it was very funny.

However, Canadians have no right to be smug, people here know nothing about their own country so why should Americans know any thing about Canada? 98% of Canadians could not name the first prime minister, correctly ID the total number of provinces, or know the year Canada became an independent nation.

All very basic questions that next to no one here could answer.

That segment where he walks around pretending to be John Howard....well he could do that in ANY country and people would believe it. Who knows what John Howard looks like? FYI, I'm up on these things enough to know that John Howard is no longer the PM of Australia any way.

I could walk around the streets of the USA and introduce my self as Jeff O'Mulligan the prime minister of Canada and every one would believe me. I mean who in the USA knows that Canada's PM is Stephen Harper and what he looks like??????

Other than that...some definite funny moments in there. This is nothing new, ever watch Jay Walking with Jay Leno. Scary.

Yeah, this is older material. Of course Australia has now a new PM, Kevin Rudd. What I think is incredibly scary is that too many douches were willing to go to war on hearsay that W (for worst ever) thinks Kyrgysztan poses a threat to the US national security.

Yeah, you've discovered the chaser's .....

http://www.chaser.com.au/

They are very popular team here on air, much loathed by the conservative mainstream public.

And don't worry. Australian's are just as stupid...well the cops are... A little while ago Sydney hosted APEC...with people like george bush in town, security was unbeliveable tight....

In this clip they managed to get Osama bin laden past two of three checkpoints of hardcore security. And sorry rich....they gave Osama a limo with the canadian flag....

They were arrested and i believe charges are still pending...

it's worth watching through to the end...

Everyone's waiting to see what they'll do with the pope in town....

Regarding The Chaser's APEC prank I believe the charges were dropped on a technicality - they had video evidence (naturally) of a policeman letting them through after a cursory glance at their fake ID's that had words like JOKE etc. in BIG type, and the Chaser team themselves turned back and were NOT ordered by the authorities to do so.

The New South Wales state government, the Australian Federal Police and the New South Wales Police Service/Force were probably relieved that the whole embarrasing affair would go away.

The same clowns - the State government that is - quietly passed an "anti-annoyance" law

designed to stop this activity and people wearing T- shirts with anti religous sentiments during the Pope's current tour here!

Civil libertarians and most Sydneysiders were outraged, and the laws were challenged in court and were correctly dumped. A small win for democracy.

Oh my God, Canada's National Igloo is melting?!?!?

I'll always remember as a little boy being in a restaurant, in Canada, where they had a placemap that had the States of the United States. Way to show pride in one's own country!

Yes, I remember they used the Canadian cover because they said they wanted to pick a country that people would assume would NOT have a big motorcade. That's Canada for you...two scooters and a Yugo.

I bet 70% of the people interviewed in that clip get all their information from Fox News too. The problem in the United States is the censorship of the media and people not giving two fu**s about what's really going on in the world. It's why they call my generation Y (why?). As long as the news tells us we're in the right we're happy. I'm not going to get into politics but it's disgusting hearing people with those answers. But I'm also sure they didn't show the answers from the majority of people asked.

Of course. It wouldn't be funny would it ! Im sure any answers that didn't fit what they wanted to hear didn't get to air...which is not dissimilar to the other side now is it.....

Or maybe he thinks the whole world belongs to the USA, ala George "Worst EVER" Bush . . .

HAHA! If that has happened something is horribly amiss with dear ol' Phil.

Is Bush really America's worst president?

Of course that is subject to debate. It is my opinion that, yes, he is the WORST president the US is had EVER. One look at his ratings now and his political track record show what kind of reactionary, ultra conservative, lying, devious, scheming, dishonest, barely articulate politician he is.

Well there is a serious movement afoot to re-name the sewage treatment plant in San Fran, "The George W. Bush Sewage Treatment Plant." It's actually on the ballot for Nov.

Has that honour been given to any other US president?

Oh well, they re-named a porno studio in LA, "The Bill Clinton Porn Studio." :D

R,

Which is quite an accomplishment! Our politicians only get corruption or scandals related to money...they'd love to have a sex scandal...but they can't :P

Actually WE would love our politicians to have sex scandals too, you know.

As for americans being stupid...stupidity is endemic to the human being so it doesn't matter where you come from (look at us...we re-elected berlusconi as our prime minister... ). I have american friends who are just as good as everyone else and many of them are pretty well informed. This may be the only thing, many americans are not willing to be informed and the general news reporter surely doesn't want to help.

Oh gosh! It is also true that he takes pratfalls on stage for public sympathy? Hopeless little man.

He exucuted droves of people as govenor of Texas so I utterly loate him. I did anyway, but I loathe him more.

This has got to be fake, the guy is off camera for most of the questions, so he could be asking them anything - quick edit, there you go.

I really hope that it wasn't real. IF it is a real representation, then its pretty sad actually. Sad and shocking.

No, not fake... pretty well known show here in Australia.

For more info on them just google 'The Chasers War on Everything'

The Chasers make fools of just about everybody - including themselves sometimes. It's a really edgy show and sometimes they are seriously "off". But the good segments are pure gold.

I've no doubt the "idiot Americans" segment is genuine. But it'a cheap shot. Do enough street interviews, you can find idiotic answers in any country. Though it seems to be particularly cheap to ask questions about international politics in a country where only 1/4 of the people ever had a passport. But hey! they can still vote, and the whole world has to suffer the consequences.

But one of the Chasers sent up club bouncers (after a news item about selective nightclubs and who they would and wouldn't let in) by dressing up as Adolf Hilter and visiting the Polish Club in Sydney. The club officials signed him in without any hesitation.

And these are the guys who bought airline tickets in the names of Al Kider and Terry Wrist, checked in, but didn't board. The cameras waited around and recorded the ground staff paging those names. None of the officials noticed the set-up names.

It's embarrassing adolescent humour at best, but it punctures an over-officious establishment in a very important way.
